Looks like a cicada they're cool as Fuck and you can even hold them.

you're right, I didn't think they were that big. come to think of it I don't think I've seen one up close before

a cursory bit of research suggests it's a tibicen, though since it's so freshly molted I don't know if the colors are are right. It's certainly large for a cicada

why have so many different species names and ranks when there's only bits of outdated half-information on them anyway

it's gotta be a dog-day cicada, neotibicen canicularis. apparently their colors vary, this one is quite orangish on the back. still freaks me out and that molting is something straight out of hell
