Antaresia pythons most underrated pet sneks: edition

/herp/ reptile classifieds for finding breeders of various scaled and sundry creatures

>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>Also check to see if there are any annual reptile shows/expos in your area as these are good places to find good animals from good breeders at partial discount

/herp/ officially official all purpose care sheet of wonder and magic

>sand a shit
>use a thermostat
>read all the caresheets
>set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>do not fuck with (handle) your herp for at least 7 days after bringing it home and ideally wait until herp has eaten at least one meal (for snakes), two meals for lizards, frogs, etc.
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>it is best to avoid chain pet stores when looking to purchase live animals as mass breeder suppliers are not especially careful about health and sound genetics... it often saves you money long term to spend a little extra up front to get a healthy animal

They great thing about about the antaresia pythons is small to medium size with personality more along the lines of the larger pythons. They are not shy like ball pythons, have excellent feeding response, but are also quite tame as adults and (in my experience) less squirmy than colubrids like corns and kings.

The smallest of the group, and smallest python species in the world, is antaresia perthensis, measuring roughly 24-30" as adults. These are not very common in the west though. If you live in straya they would be easier to find, I assume.

Largest of the group is antaresia maculosa aka spotted python, measuring about 36-42ish" as adults.

Fairly long lived as well. 20+ years with good care is a safe bet.

AND because they are not that popular outside of australia but still relatively common in the states if you look around for them, price is typically quite low. I would expect to pay $150 online here in Canada, under $100 at expo. Definitely under $100 in the USA.

Would a 40 gallon breeder tank be enough for a baby bearded dragon?
>>
>>2162825

Certainly.
>>
>>2162828
Wouldn't it get stressed by all that space?
>>
>>2162835

beardies aren't as affected by that as more shy (especially nocturnal) species are. since hatchlings grow so fast you might as well start with a 40g that they can stay in for a while.
>>
Question. Just got a 2-3 month old beardie and the lady at petsmart told me that it eats 5 crickets a day. That's what I fed him the first day, despite him still seeming hungry. So I read from other sources that you should put crickets and see how much he can eat in 10 minutes and then take the rest out and use that as a standard. So I put 11 crickets in and he ate them all really fast, and then ate 10 crickets later that day, just as fast. I don't want to hurt the guy but I want to know what the limit is here. Is he just a glutton or what?
>>
any /an/ons that can give me a good estimate on if I'm feeding my jcp enough?
Hes around 34 inches give or take and I've been giving him a 15-20gram mouse once a week since I have some left over from my ball and was planning on moving him up to 25~ gram rats after the mice run out(maybe 2 months supply of them left)
>>
>>2162844
beards have a reputation for eating everything in sight, its what they do. Just make sure that you are either gutloading or dusting the crickets, gutloading is the better of the two in my opinion.
>>
>>2162848

how much does your snake weigh and how does the size of the rats compare to the snake's girth? Rat should be about the same girth as the snake's at widest point. Rat weight approximately 10% of snake's weight.
>>
I have a new milk snake, shes about 10mo old. What is the best way to go about the first feeding? I know she likes to burrow so she has a TON of substrate but she spends 95% of her time buried at the bottom. Only time I see her out and about is when I wakeup in the middle of the night for a piss and sometimes I do a round on the snakes and see her poking around.
>>
>>2162901

Wait until she's been with you for about a week so she settles in to the new tank. Waggle mouse with tongs in her general vicinity. She will smell it. If she's stubborn about it and doesn't want to come up to eat, you can dig her out and resume mouse wiggling in front of her face. Try not to flinch when she strikes. They're fast and it can take first time snake owners by surprise.

Once she starts eating you won't have any trouble getting her to continue in future. Milks have a pretty strong feeding response.
>>
I have a Giant African Bullfrog and he's about 5 months of age and about 5 inches long now. I feed him a big meal of dusted mealworms/crickets every week or so and was wondering if I should slow down as he comes into maturity.

He's not overweight or anything but I don't want to overfeed an animal with a slowing metabolism.
>>
>>2162835
there's no such thing as being stressed by space
its being stressed by too much open space. so long as you aren't a shitty keeper and have plently of cover to utilize its good

There are tons of gutloading feed availible. I use Flukers...
>>
>>2163293

Isn't the cricket diet expensive?

Just get some generic brand cheerios, some kind of fruit or vegetable (carrot is often used because it dries out instead of become moldy), and a kitchen sponge in case the carrot isn't enough water.

Do this the night before and dust them before feeding.

Not good with snakes. What kind is this? Found it on my back porch under neath pool towels. Pretty sure it bit my dog because she has this weird hard lump near her anus.

I live in Melbourne Florida if that helps.

Looks like a pinstripe morph ball python. The snake is nonvenomous and so small I seriously doubt it caused that lump on your dog. You should probably have a vet check your dog's anus, could be a backed up scent gland or something who knows.

just be careful over feeding. i gave mine too many meal worms and then she lost the ability to use her back and front legs. was puking all night. i felt like such shit. she pulled through and i learned my lesson. i'd try to feed it only once a day. reptiles have slow metabolisms and like that anon said, beardies are gluttons

>>
Sup /herp/, been looking to get myself a ball python for a while now, reading all the care sheets I can, etc. But I need your collective wisdom on one quick question: should I get my future snek from a Reptile Super Show (coming to my city this weekend), or from a reputable small reptile store/breeder? There are 2 in my city that have excellent reviews, very knowledgable employees, etc. LLL Reptile and Pet Kingdom for those of you in the San Diego area.
>>
>>2163676
Also I'm leaning toward LLL as of right now, a few years ago I had some tree frogs from there, the staff was wonderful and the frogs were super healthy and lived for a long time
>>
>>2163676
as long as the snake is healthy and eating well it doesn't really matter

>>2163295
>>2163298
>>
>>2163626
Yeah the adult is definitely a blue eye leucistic. The hatchlings might have some other stuff, it's hard to see in the photo if they have yellow pigment in there or not.
>>
>>2163640

You wanna snek or a lizard? How big? Which countty do you live in?
>>
>>2163676
Reptile show will have lots of breeders there selling their snakes. Those shows are great as the prices will be a bit cheaper than normal and of course you don't need to fuss with shipping.

>>2163697

Not sure, anon. Switch bulbs if you're concerned.
>>
So an old college friend of mine is offering to give me her adult bearded dragon, as she's moving and doesn't want to take it with her. I'm really eager to accept it, it's just that the other half refuses to have any live insects in the house.
I've been looking on the internet at the Zoo Med bearded dragon pellets and the gourmet bearded dragon food. Has anyone here had any experience with these products? Would I be able to manage a healthy diet for the dragon with those kind of foods?

>>
>>2163893

leucistic BPs are gorgeous and stay that way their entire lives. I'm not a big fan of all the morph ridiculousness with BPs but the leucistics are an exception for sure.
>>
>>2163907
Only morphs I think need to die off are the few ball python ones that come with well known and documented neurological issues. And many people just label it 'cute quirk'. There's a reason there's never been a successful birth of a Super Spider morph for Ball Python.

I'm curious, does anyone know if there would be a noticeable difference between an Axanthic high red phase Hognose from normal Axanthic Hognose? In my head, it would have reds where the blacks would be so a red/white red/grey but it is kind of hard to search since most information is just on morph combinations.

I've never owned a bearded dragon, but everyone always says how social they are. Whenever I see them, they're always just bumps on a log soaking light until feed time. Am I missing something?

I ask because I'm doing research now for a reptile pet and I'm torn between a Leopard Gecko, Crested Gecko, and Bearded Dragon.

>>
>>2164665
Lots more substrate (many corn snakes like to dig), much smaller hide (and a second one on the other side as well)

Those little fake vines with a suction cup on one side are pretty neat. You could also get one of those corner tarp-things some people use for their lizards. Some snakes will chill in them and it gives you a small 'second level'.
>>
>>2164665

Ditch that half log and put in two proper hides. You want something with a small entrance that lets in as little light as possible. Also, yes a couple branches to climb.
>>
>>2164674

axanthic BPs look mediocre as adults. the contrast fades considerably.
>>
>>2164561

look at breeders' sites in their 'collection' section. these will be the adult snakes that they use in their breeding projects. should be lots of labelled photos for comparison.
>>
>>2164681
The problem is most searches using 'red' turn up 'red albino' which makes things frustrating. Ah well, google will eventually pay out.

I have 3, I say get one. They really aren't that difficult to care for, the hardest part is making sure they're kept cool enough, they're really prone to heat strokes if you aren't careful. The humidity should be a cinch if you use a tub or PVC enclosure, they basically take care of themselves.

This is my hypo girl.

>>2164705

I don't really have any that forms.

When I first got my hypo and my newest Picasso stripe (pic related), I did have problems with mold forming. No matter what I did, within a few days mold would cover the bedding. I'd have to change it out and try something else. I tried keeping the bedding less damp, adding more ventilation, spraying rather than soaking the bedding and straining it out, but nothing worked.

With their enclosures, I couldn't get the mold to stop until I gave up on sphagnum moss and switched to a mix of EcoEarth and cypress mulch. Cypress mulch by itself doesn't hold humidity all that well, but without the mulch the EcoEarth molds since it doesn't dry out fast enough.

My oldest BRB has been housed on pure sphagnum moss almost the entire time I've had him (roughly 2.5 years), and never saw any mold at any time in his tub with the moss. There was some when I used EcoEarth, but I switched to sphagnum moss and didn't see any more mold.

i picked up pellets just in case i miss a day and my parents need to feed her while i'm gone.

>tried them in pellet form
she didnt even touch them.

>tried mixing water to make it a paste
didnt touch that shit or even go near it. kinda like how jews stay away from brickoven pizza.

>finally tried mixing waxworms into the pellets
she literally dug to the bottom of her bowl spraying pellets all over the tank like when a dog kicks up dirt after it shits.

you can try but idt as an adult it'll change its eating habits. they can switch over to mostly vegetables as they get older, but they still need their calcium.

quick question for you guys because google is stupid:

does white light hurt a gecko's eyes?

I live in an efficiency and I'm up all night, in the past I would have him on a table and I would turn off all the lights and just be on the computer and he would never go out of hiding to eat unless the room was pitch black and I wasn't moving. I got sick and tired of it so I stuffed him in the closet (which has a wall sized window) and have just left him there for like, months.

I wanna bring him back out, but idk if its fine to have the lights on and I just need to spend more time with him so he isn't terrified by me, or if that's just how geckos are and it is better off being alone in the dark.

So I was away from my house for a year for business reasons, my parents were feeding my 2 snakes and ended up forgetting about them every now and then, so they probably got fed only 6 times over a 12 month period.

They don't seem malnourished or skinny, but I'm worried it may have stunted their growth as they were both under 2 years old before I left, they are basically the same size now as they were when I left.

Is it possible for my snakes to catch back up in size? Or will they never reach full size potential? A corn & a milk btw.

I purchased a snake not too long ago, a black ball python from what the carrier told me and it should be here soon. I was wondering what kinds of food and feeding habits I should do. I don't know much about snakes, all I know is that the species name is dendraspis polylepis or something like that from the craigslist post, but the guy said all ball pythons dont eat the same. Please and thank you.

Just got my bearded dragon into his new home yesterday, hes been acting weird sense.

I know its normal for new animals to be stressed in new environments, but hes not eating as much as a baby beardie should, and he seems to be over active with his reflection on the tank class.

thoughts?

I may be opinionated because I live in Australia and we can't get foreign species, but I think carpet pythons are one of the best pet snakes. They look awesome and colourful, aren't too big, relatively easy to care for, and can be tamed quite easily. I think they're not as popular as corns or balls because some species require some humidity, and they are bigger than most first time owners want. If they weren't, they'd be heaps more popular. Antaresia definitely deserve to me more popular though.
>>
>>2167406
they are just starting to pick up in popularity in the US, and yeah the size is kind of a problem seeing as they're nearly as big as boas.
>>
>>2167409
Yeah, I can see why a first time owner wouldn't want them. But for people who are fairly experienced with snakes (like me) they are perfect. I work at a reptile place and as such we have foreign species, including boas. Boas are awesome as well, the ones we have are puppy dog tame.
>>
>>2167406

Maybe in length but they're half the width.

Also, "as big as boas" could be anywhere from 2'-18', as "boas" covers an entire family of different species. If you mean boa constrictors (the ones commonly referred to as "red tails"), even they can vary from an average of 3'-8' as an adult.

Do you guys use natural looking setups with proper substrate, uvb lamp, climbs and hides etc for your dragons? Most people I know do (including me) but it seems like if you show these setups to breeders and Americans, they claim they're harmful and dangerous. >>

sand is not a natural, proper substrate
if you have a nice DIRT or rocky substrate that isn't entirely made of loose particles then its fine.
>>
>>2167832

>>2167908
Nicaraguans, Tarahumara, Crawl Cay, Caulker Cay, just to name the ones I know. None of these should reach 6'. Boa imperator is also not the only species in the boa constrictor complex, although there's not many others that stay that small. amarali are small, usually under 6', but I don't think they stay as small as 3'.
>>

>>
>>2169229
Extra info: it won't eat anything that isn't alive if I remove it from its enclosure so that isn't an option. It'll spend the whole time pacing around the edges of a empty tub or terrarium unless there's live food, even if I leave it there for an hour+.
>>
>>2169229

Also does anyone know if it's true that leopard geckos would take calcium powder left in a dish "when they need it"?
>>
Anyone else have a ball python that turns into a ravenous monster during feeding time?
She just full force hit the glass when I came into the room.
I guess its time to move her up a rat size.
Is 500ish grams too small to move her up to small rats? Or would randomizing feeding days soothe it a little? I feed her on Sundays pretty consistently and she knows it
>>
>>2169547
In my experience they accidently ingest enough of it to get what they need. Although I've read a lot of things saying that they will take calcium when they need it, I don't really believe it's true, I've never seen any of my geckos deliberately walk up to their dish and take calcium.
>>
>>2169775
Weigh the food and feed her 10~15% of that (I'm assuming she's under a year old if she's at 500g)

Definitely small rats.
>>
>tfw I am moving out next month into my own place

I can't decide what to add first. Either a Borneo short tail, Aru locality GTP, Southern white lip python, Suriname or Guyana BCC, retic, Macklots or Savu, or something else. Gotta catch 'em all eventually.
>>
>>2169547
True. If they're getting enough from their dusted insects they won't bother with the calcium dish. Most often the calcium dish only gets used if gecko had not been properly fed previously (feeders not gutloaded and dusted) or if it's a female ovulating, especially if gravid with fertile eggs.

there's literally nothing wrong with owning a corn snake.

you've basically proven that you're only in this to get the flashiest pet.
>>

Or rather, YOU insisted I'm a poorfag and was looking for some beginner pet when I literally listed out numerous options of what I was looking into, none of which were corn snakes or even beginner-friendly species. I am looking for something a step beyond what I already have as far as husbandry and behavior.

kek at you thinking I want the "flashiest pet" when not a single thing I listed was some fancy morph. Nice try though. Next time, try to view these animals further than just what they look like. They aren't toys or decoration.
>>
>>2170021
She's already eating rats and refused to eat a larger one? That is definitly somewhat strange- but ball pythons are notorious for their picky eating. I'm glad that of my 4, one eats immediately if I drop it near her lair and leave, the other will actively 'hunt' so I tease her like I do my boas. My last two...lived on live or with pre-killed in a much smaller bin. They're being huge butts about switching to f/t'd.

At 500 grams, she can take small rats. That should be the last time you'll need to bump prey items. I wouldn't even consider offering a bp under 2,000 grams a medium rat as a staple, I'd prefer to save that for the giant 3,000-4,000 gram balls. The vast majority of ball pythons have no need to go above a small rat.

>>2169865
At 500 grams you stop using the Munson plan, it is only meant for hatchlings and juveniles, not subadults and adults. If you continue feeding them based off the Munson plan into adulthood, you're overfeeding your snake.

>>

Snakes dislike being held, but there are slow species that just freeze when on your hand in hope that their camouflage hides them. Like Boa constrictor/imperator.

>>
>>2162750
Though it's not reptile nor amphibian I don't feel like it'd be worth me making a thread for.
I'm thinking about going and catching a black widow and I know the general habitat I'd use (large jar with some branches and other stuff) and that they supposedly eat every 2 or so weeks but how often do you clean their containers? do you even need to?
I've never actually had any pet spiders but became obsessed with black widows for some reason.
>>
>>2170368
Not many enjoy being with humans, rather what they enjoy is getting out of their terrarium and exploring. So if you want one you can take out a lot, get an active and explorative species
>>
I'm considering starting a frog hobby. Are there any tree frog species who have variable colours/markings?
>>
>>2170368
Enjoy? None.

Ball pythons and boas will sit still, more or less, when held. Other snakes are more active and will be constantly on the move. My favorite way to interact with ball pythons is to sit on the floor cross legged with a blanket on lap. Let python curl up on my lap under the blanket. They like the body heat and the darkness the blanket provides. They will then poke their noses out to explore a bit when they're comfy. Come out and climb around some. Then back in to blanket cave. They seem to do very well when you can mix both handling and warmth and security all at the same time in this way.

i don't think any reptile enjoys being held, some will tolerate it though.

corn snakes get tired after about 30 seconds of squirming around and then they will chill out in your hands for a while, ball pythons are basically a pet rock and just don't give a fuck.

as far as reptiles overall go, the bearded dragon seems to tolerate being held really well.

Hello guys,
so the thing is that I really want a pet reptile, but I would prefer one that is chill (slow moving so I could let is fuck around in my room or let it sunbath in the garden on a sunny day). According to my research a blue-tongue would be perfect, but it's nearly impossible to buy one here for some reason. I live in fucking Hungary btw.
So the question is: Do you guys know any reptile that would fit my description or should I travel 500 km to germany to buy one ?
Thanks in advance, but please exclude snakes, and bearded dragons :)
>>
>>2171595

Geckos lick everything and often miss when hunting so they'll get a mouthful of their substrate. This is why they don't advise loose substrates and geckos have a high risk of impaction.

On top of this, sand gets hot and while the surface may say 88-90 which is ideal, the sand under it could be 95 or higher. So when your gecko is walking around they will burn their feet.

So yea, it's simply not worth the risk for a lot of people. If you feed outside of the main cage 100% of the time you may do alright. But it's still a risk.

Bearded Dragons are bumps on a log as well. They'll mostly just chill out with you. Especially when older.

If you're into snakes, ball pythons tend to just hang out and not move much as well.
>>
>>2171600

I don't have one but I'm considering it more and more. Universal Rocks sells flexible 3d backgrounds that several would also make good tank mats. They also sell a flexible flat material.

I asked above if anyone had any experience with them but I didn't get a response. I was going to buy the rigid ledge 3d background and a sheet of the universal flat mat and cut it to size.

It's pricey though.
>>
>>2171646
I feed them on a cardboard surface, its s little hide in their cage and the main light source is on a large rock
>>
>>2171648
You could also make your own background with Great Stuff foam and dryloc+peat mixture
>>
>>2171606

See if you can find BTS breeders in Europe. I sure there are some. They can ship to you.

Another possible option is to check out the care requirements for tortoises and see whether or not it's doable for you or too much work. There are a few species that stay fairly small, like 20cm-30cm or so as adults. Common ones are,

>russian tortoise
>hermann's tortoise
>greek tortoise
>red footed tortoise
>some box turtle species
>>
>>2171687
They wanted something that could be cleaned and scrubbed without falling apart. Me too, was hoping someone would reply.
>>
>>2171679

Leopard Geckos actually do better with under-tank heaters. They're nocturnal so will hide from the light during the day and they don't need the light to process D3 like other reptiles.

The under tank heater will allow the gecko to hide while digesting their food. You want to aim for about 90 for their hide.
>>
>>2171687
Yea. I may give this a shot. I just know from experience with my saltwater tank that I'll end up changing things around and want a more modular option.
>>
Could Dubia roaches survive heat up to the high 90's (Fahrenheit) during transit?

sometimes bearded dragons will store food in their beard. I know mine do it when i feed them sometimes.

Can anyone recommend a good 'training' snake for someone wanting to go into venomous snake handling? Like rattles and monocled cobras? I was told it'd be smart to practice on non venomous but aggressive snakes to get used to the prongs/grabbers and stuff you have to use with the venomous ones.
>>
>>2172240
For common, not prohibitively expensive, snakes... i think probably tiger rats, texas rats, radiated rats, mangroves. Squirmy as fuck and strike fast if they're in the mood to do so.
>>
>>2172264
Thanks anon I'll look into getting one of them (probably the tiger rat snake) Just wondering on your or any other anons personal opinion but how much experience handling more territorial/aggressive snakes would be pretty much minimum before considering a rattler or cobra? I know it obviously depends on the persons comfortableness with the more aggressive snakes and stuff but like any general idea of like 2 years, 5, etc?
>>
>>2172292

Ideally you want a mentor of some kind to teach you the basic do's and don'ts of venomous snake handling. If that's not possible, at least start out with species that won't cause you too much harm (with treatment) in the event of a bite. Like definitely rattle snakes before cobras, for instance.
>>
>>2172344
Yeah I was reading a thread about practice snakes before getting 'hot' ones and pretty much everyone said you'd be dealing with apples and oranges if you tried just using training snakes instead of finding a mentor. I'm guessing going to like a reptile store/pet store or zoo or somewhere with a lot of snakes would be the best chance at finding a mentor for hot ones? Also yeah that was my original thinking >king rat/tiger rat followed by a rattler since they seem more 'calm' compared to any cobra then eventually work up to water/spitting/monocled cobras at some point.
You'd have to surely tell Animal control, the local hospital & possibly the police department that you have whatever venomous snake too correct? in order to like not get fucked if you do mess up at any point that is.
>>
>>2172358

Find a breeder and offer to volunteer for some mentoring. If you had one type of snake you were focusing on you could try a zoo or something.
>>
>>2172358

That is my understanding, yep. I've never personally dealt with hots as they are illegal to keep in my country. A good place to start looking for people to help is to ask around amongst the snake breeders (of any species) in your area. And/or google to see if there are any breeders of hots around you. If there are, that's perfect. Talk to them and see what they have to say.

As far as notifying various authorities, the closest hospital to you is definitely top of the list. I don't know if you need to inform the others though. And that probably depends if the species you keep require something along the lines of CITES paperwork. The one thing I have noticed all venomous keepers say is that you should have a starter dose of the antivenin(s) needed to treat a bite for every species of snake you have. This is important as local hospital/poison control generally only stock the ones for local species that people may encounter in the wild. If it's something not local, they would have to order in. So that's why you want the first few days worth of antivenin to cover you while more can be shipped.

Read lots and lots about the different types of venoms, how lethal dosage is calculated, what kind of damage can be done regardless of early treatment and so on.

My (indoors) cat found him, first thing he's been able to hunt, he was thrilled. Saved the lizard from him and put him in the garden though.

>>2172371
Alright cool thanks again anons. I'll check and see if any breeders are in my area and if not I'll look into general snake handlers and see if they'd know anywhere to try. If I recall depending on the snake (Obviously I assume a rattler would cost much less to obtain antivenom for given how they're native.) the Av will end up costing 1,000+ possibly especially for cobras I'm assuming. So I'll probably start saving money towards that alone just in case I do end up actually getting one. I don't believe you need a license or really 'have' to inform in my state the police/animal control just if they escape I think but I'll still inform them regardless so they are at least aware if I get one that there is a foreign venomous snake in my home and such. But step one is finding a breeder and becoming used to handling and not getting fucked/messing up.
Probably a retarded question but will a breeder/handler likely even bother talking with me if I've got basically no real experience with handling/snakes? I know it's probably full retard to focus on hots when you're fuck all inexperienced but that's what training and practice/learning from a mentor is for right? or is it more likely they'll tell me to piss off until I've gotten a few years with non venomous snakes first? I'd imagine if I focused primarily on the species of hots that I'm trying for (Diamondbacks & monocled) that it wouldn't be a huge setback or problem since I know the dangers of them and will be heavily researching all I can about both species respectively.

>>
>>2172240
>>2172264
Asian Vine Snake/Whip Snake is also a pretty good one to train on I hear.
>>
>>2172292
One I've heard is start a timer. Snake escapes, you lose control of it, you get struck, reset the timer. One year of no failure, can chalk up the general foundation. But definitely need a mentor once you start getting HOTS.

I didn't see anyone else mention, but one thing talked about is Bite Protocols. Don't know much about them (I don't have HOTS myself) I think I saw them mentioned in The Venom Interviews.
>>
>>2172387
Skink.

Plastic tub if it's a baby. Pvc tank from any of the major sellers for an adult. Animal Plastics is typically the cheapest.

While pvc cages are a pricey initial investment, they will save you money long term on electricity costs due to far better heat retention.

How dangerous are ball pythons to keep?

Also i just feel like sharing but i remember this cool time as a kid i had a boa constrictor go over my lap
>>
>>2172953
They aren't dangerous. You usually have to try pretty hard to piss off a ball python enough that it wants to bite you. Bites are minor even if they do. They are generally pussies that just want to hide their heads inside their coils and wait for danger to pls go.
>>
>>2172956
What about hand feeding?
>>
>>2172959
Use a set of tongs. BPs rely heavily on heat sensing to aim their strikes. As your hand is warmer than a thawed rodent (or about the same if heated), hand feeding is a good way to get accidentally bitten.
>>
>>2172685
Basically the same care as for any BCI.
>>
>>2172988

>BPs rely heavily on heat sensing to aim their strikes

can anyone recommend a snake that's like a good middle ground in size between the ball python and boa constrictor? non-aggressive as well
>>
>>2173128

slender/fast or more thick/slow kinda snek? If boas appeal, you could look in to one of the smaller BCI locales. Like the central american ones.
>>
>>2173091

Yep. That's true of all snakes to some degree. Doesn't matter the size. If a little garter gets your finger instead of the pinky mouse it was aiming for, it's still going to try to swallow your finger for a bit before it realizes the situation isn't going to work.
>>
>>2173132

Gaboons are so fucking adorable. Probably the ball python of the venomous snakes, I think.

>>
>>2173328
almost all leos do this while feeding
they shake their tails and pounce just like cats and I wouldn't be surprised if that was a major component in the common name "leopard gecko"

>>
>>2173149
They're usually about the same size as a regular BCI but thicker/rounder. Most average 5'-6' from what I can tell but you see the occasional 8-footer.
>>
>>2173367
Indeed, so many venomous snakes are really hyper and twitchy. But I think their girth is closer to blood pythons.
>>
So i'm getting this bearded dragon from a friend as they don't have time for it any more, they knew i was looking in to getting a crestie as my first herp and offered me the beardie.

I know its totally different care to a crestie and have read all the care sheets etc but my friend only feeds it locusts. I guess this is bad since they need veggies too in a healthy diet, problem is it refuses to eat anything but locusts now

How should I go about getting greens in to his diet?
>>
>>2173468
Tie a small piece of veggie to each locust you feed it with a bit of sugar paper

Update on Apollo. 3 weeks in. He's pretty chill. Yesterday a cricket got into his tupperware moist hide and he ran into the side three times trying to get it, instead of going around.

My heatpad isnt strong enough. How else should I get more warmth onto that side of the hab?
>>

Don't leave crickets in if they aren't eating them. Crickets are opportunistic carnivores. Also cannibals.

Made the mistake and it led to my leopard gecko having a chunk taken out of her. Wound went septic.
