I generally agreed until my parents took my dog on vacation with them. I was so so bored at home without him, and missed having with me when I went out for my runs.

Dogs are definitely more than accessories
>>
>>2161717
Right. They're also entertiainment
>>
>>2161717
Unless your dog has a job, then I would say they are accessories. Just because you run with your dog doesn't somehow make him intrinsically more valuable or better than a small, companion dog.

At the end of the day, a companion animal is a companion animal. Don't try to have a pretense yours is somehow better than another one because you can take it for a run or something.

what type of dog would /an/ recommend for someone who is limited in terms of their ability to exercise? my friend is very interested in getting a dog, but he has back problems and doesn't think he could walk one more than once or twice a day. He has a pretty big yard and plenty of time to train one, he just can't walk/run around a whole lot.
>>
>>2162045
certainly up there
>>
>>2165874
Walks are not so for exercise but for stimulation. The exercise is part of it yeah, but it is more for letting a doggo explore the world and get lots of great sniffs and pees in. There are plenty of ways to exercise a dog with a big backyard and having limited physical mobility. If he is willing to play a really good game of fetch with a dog for 30 minutes a day, then he will be fine with anything.

That being said, he may want to go with a smaller dog, like no more than 25-30 pounds. Get something that he doesn't have to worry about hurting him if the doggo sees a squirrel and wants to chase it while on a walk. I imagine if he got a large or even medium dog, the dog might be able to pull hard enough to mess him up good.
>>
>>2160334
how much exercise do they need ?
>>
>>2160858

>>2165874
small dog, companion category.

a big yard and lots of time will do well for dogs that require a lot of mental stimulation, but the bad news is that dogs that do well with lots of mental stimulation are also the types that require a lot of exercise as well.

>>
>>2165874
>>2166678
Honestly I think as long as he has plenty of time for training/keeping a dog's mind exercised, can walk it once or twice a day, and has enough room to be able to throw a ball for the dog the chase, that's more than enough for most dogs, even high-energy dogs. A combo of mental stimulation + physical exercise tires dogs out the fastest and it shouldn't be too hard to provide this even with limited mobility on the owner's part, especially since you say he's got a large yard.

Working at an animal hospital before ever owning a pet, I have found that, just by what people choose to do with them maintenance-wise, pets definitely reside somewhere between "objects" (accessories) and living beings. They are living beings deserving of respect, love, etc. but we treat them like accessories. It is what it is.

Many people have no problem with boarding their dog for upwards of a month, being lazy about vet visits and being sticklers about paying for medical services, or replacing a dog recently put to sleep with one of the exact same breed, which is like what one would do with a TV or something...I think it's weird to replace a dog within two weeks.
>>
>>2167510
>Working at an animal hospital
Surely the better pet owners don't make as many visits
>>
>>2167511
Usually they come in at least once a year. What I meant is that you will often see an animal in horrible shape come in to be euthanized. But when you look at the record, you might see that they haven't been there in many years, when the situation could have been avoided/monitored.
>>
>>2167510
>boarding for over a month

Story time!
>searching for a job because recently quit
>find a position at a local animal hospital for animal care attendant
>interview goes well, go on for shadow shift with senior staff member
>they offer boarding
>the dogs are in SMALL runs, maybe 2ft wide x 4ft long
>there's no AC or ventilation, all the dogs are panting
>not even a bed, just a few towels over the concrete
>each dog has one kong to chew on

Two of the dogs were older and calm and would only be staying for a short time but the third dog is a King GSD who was 8 mths at the time of boarding, which was 6 weeks ago. This poor dog is growing up with no stimulation in a small, hot, kennel and the owner is overseas trying to file paperwork to get the dog over.
It makes me wonder if people even look into the places where they're sending the pets or just drop them off at the first available facility

Your really don't know which ones are the best neos, motherfucker. If you actually want a dog close to the traits you are highlighting you should never get a show neomastiff. Those dogs are a structural mess and a genetic trainwreck. Remember: The excess of wrinkles is never a good thing.

people are so afraid of these dogs, when really they aren't aggressive at all, when raised properly and taken care of. Pit bulls Are friendly, at least every one i have been around are. the meanest dogs, in my opinion, temperament wise, are Chihuahuas, and Jack russells. Too much energy and terrier blood makes JR terriers super hyper and nippy, Chihuahuas, are just funny because they are so nippy and act so tough for a little dog.

This guy gets it.
Mutts are really the best. They are the healthiest, they are the least expensive, and they can have so many positive traits of purebreds.

Plus, they are easy to adopt!
>>
>>2169492
This so much. They look so fucking dumb with uncropped ears.
>>
>>2173090
Mutts CAN be the healthiest... they can also be the unhealthiest, what with being an unpredictable doggo genetic mashup. They can also have the most generic personalities and drab, homogenized appearances.
>>
>>2173110
A cross will almost always be healthier than a purebred. That being said, they can just get screwed with bad genes on both sides.

>homogenized appearances
>mutts
What? They by and far are way more interesting and diverse. Purebreds of the same breed all look the same, whereas unless you have lab/pit mix #1235321, your mutt will look really different from most other dogs.
>>
>>2160337
i really love my pit
>>
>>2173115
Mutts fundamentally water down centuries, even millenia of controlled breeding that resulted in very divergent dog breeds. There's no point celebrating the undoing of history and generations of highly-concentrated effort.

I view it as vaguely comparable to racial characteristics (obviously a multitude of magnitudes difference in importance) - nobody wishes for a vast underclass of coffee-colored mixed-race people that all look the same, with no collective ethnic history and conscience to guide them, so why wish the same brown-ish, medium-sized, mediocre and homogenized future for doggos?
>>
>>2173134

>homogenized

You what?

My mutt looks like no other dog I've ever seen.

Also, mutts are never the unhealthiest.

Lets not bullshit here, 3/4 of purebreed dogs are completely fucked on all levels. Pugs/bulldogs are the most obvious examples. they are well and truly fucked on even the most basic level. They fail as dogs.
>>
>>2173134

>controlled breeding

Don't sugar coat it.

It's incest. It's inbreeding. It's the reason many pure breed dogs have issues with cancer (goldens/labs).

>There's no point celebrating the undoing of history and generations of highly-concentrated effort.

No!!!! There is a fucking point. We make those breeds healthier. I blame the kennel clubs for this bullshit. Breeding for looks over health. It would be very very easy to open the breeding on pures just a little bit and get some diversity in there, to make them more "dog shaped".
>>
>>2173142
Purebred labs are great, though. Our family has had them for generations.
>>
>>2173147

No argument, I love labs, friendliest dogs in the world.

I thought so too untill my sister got this little dogger and its the goofiest adorable little ball of energy and fur that takes no shit from larger breeds.
>>
>>2173142
>>2173144
I think you're both exaggerating things out of all proportions... a huge majority of purebred dogs are fine. Absolutely fine. Each breed just happens to have slightly more common or prevalent health issues than others, down to the unfortunate inbreeding needed to create a small population, and physical dimensions to some extent (e.g. dachshunds with bad backs, fucked up pug faces etc.). Only in the most retarded breeds are these genetic fuckups even an issue, no need to shit on a majority of non-mutts.
