what are some good animals other than dogs or cats that have

Hand raised/bred rats, ferrets, rabbits, certain birds, fish to an extent(many of them are almost as smart as dogs), horses, chickens, sone goats and sheep, donkeys.

OP, why not a cat or dog? Most animals will not appreciate your presence. Even cats have like a 30% chance of wanting you there all the time. It's a tall order,really.

rats are wonderful small pets, i've had them for a few years now and i can honestly say they're as sociable as dogs but nowhere near as needy. they're super cuddly and amusing and definitely worth it if you can deal with the short lifespan (usually only 2 or 3 years)

Fish can be cuddly, but that's not what that anon meant. Here's a video of a guy petting a moray eel, the eel seems pretty psyched about it.
