OP, why not a cat or dog? Most animals will not appreciate your presence. Even cats have like a 30% chance of wanting you there all the time. It's a tall order,really.

rats are wonderful small pets, i've had them for a few years now and i can honestly say they're as sociable as dogs but nowhere near as needy. they're super cuddly and amusing and definitely worth it if you can deal with the short lifespan (usually only 2 or 3 years)
