If I know a horse's weight, is there a calculus to know how strongly I can kick (as in, the leg aids) him without hurting him and without making him so "numb" that the other riders will have to kick him even stronger, otherwise he won't feel it or won't respond?
>>
>>2141054
No, but you should always always ALWAYS be working to make your aids lighter, not wondering how much hardness you can get away with. If you're starting with a dead-sided horse that can be a challenge but it's worth it in the long run. A well-trained horse has aids that are nearly imperceptible to an outside observer, that is what you should be striving toward.

I don't think it's going to hurt them. Horses can handle alcohol much better than people can.

If I know a horse's weight, is there a calculus to know how long and how big around his penis is?
Also is there a general rule for flared size vs unflared?
>>
>>2141128
That is kinda the problem. The horse I was riding just wouldn't respond to my leg aids, my teacher told me to kick him stronger, but it seems like a bad idea somehow. I'm scared of numbing the horse.
>>

That particular foal appears to be a cremello pinto, which means that it's likely to grow to look something like the pic. Foals with lethal white syndrome die within days if that. It wouldn't have been around long enough for a picture like this.

To add, there's actually no such thing as an albino horse (albinism requires 2 copies of a recessive gene, and dilution genes in horses are all dominant). On a related note, there's also no such thing as a white horse. Link is provided if you want a thorough explanation.

I think the author of that page has erroneously conflated "white" with "albino". It is possible to be white without being albino after all.

No one would give a rat's ass what "kind" of white a horse is, except that lots of people want a particular color of horse. And the genetic origin of that color is very important when you're trying to breed for it. When you breed two horses together, with the aim of getting a particular color, you need to know what ingredients you're mixing together. Some "types" of white (I'm oversimplifying here) mix with certain colors one way and other colors a different way. If you want your horse to sell well, or to match other horses (like when you are breeding driving horses to work in a team), you need to know what you've got. What's dominant, what's recessive, what's going to stay the same color as it ages, etc.

Let me put a hypothetical scenario - me becoming paraplegic.

Would that disable me from ever riding a horse autonomously? I suppose the horse would need special training because leg cues would no longer be a thing. How difficult would it be to find someone who knows what best aids there are to replace the legs and can train a horse that way?

There's quite a few riding for the disabled charities and foundations that would likely be the best source of information with regard to sourcing special tack and looking into training. However, I believe re-training the horse isn't too difficult (voice aids or gently flicking a long whip are often used even by able-bodied riders), but of course it requires a calm-natured horse that's smooth to ride. The main issues are mounting and dismounting and tacking up the horse independently, though I have seen paraplegic riders manage all this unassisted with the help of a mechanical hoist.

Mini story time:

Horses (3 of thems) got out last night. I must have forgotten to close one of our sliding doors, because in the middle of the night, I heard hoofsteps on gravel. They were all just chilling around my car. Thankfully we're pretty far from the road, and they all follow the oldest mare around. It'd be extraordinarily unlikely for her to even leave the front lawn.

Also thankfully, they didn't tear apart the barn. Guess they just wanted to nibble the grass on the other side of the fence, which is silly because they've got quite a few acres to muck about in. Anyways, wrangling them up just consisted of placing a couple carrots in their buckets, and they were back in the paddocks in no time.

Thanks for your warning, but I should be fine - I live alone.
But what do you mean by being "actively evil-minded"? Will they bite me without provocation?
>>
>>2145320
>Will they bite me without provocation?
No. They're intelligent so they don't go for head on confrontations with something bigger than them, which is why you should keep them away from children btw. It will fucking destroy everything in reach behind your back. And try, probably succeed, to run away.
>>
>>2145323
Hmmm... Do you think that a miniature horse would be a better choice then? According to wikipedia, they're "friendly and interact well with people".
>>
>>2145329
Get a donkey. They're cute, loyal balls of fluff that (usually) love to be snuggled.
>>
>>2145329
Haven't had experience with them. But beware any toy breeds (of any species) for serious genetic defects. That's an universal advice, some really fucked up breeding practices are used to produce the "cute" breeds.
>>

>loyal balls of fluff that (usually) love to be snuggled.

Because of pics like >>2142234 I assumed that horses like cuddling as well, but now I'm starting to question that.

>>2145335
Thanks for pointing it out! That's a good argument for choosing a donkey instead.
>>
>>2145315

What about a falabella? They're small horses. You still need land and such you can't keep any equine in a house/flat.
>>
>>2145411
>You still need land and such you can't keep any equine in a house/flat.
I'm glad that you pointed it out; I thought that they won't need much space since they're as small as a dog.
I googled some more and it looks like keeping 2 mini horses in my backyard would be stupid, expensive, illegal and cruel. I have to give up on them for now.

Thanks for your help, everyone.
>>
>>2145486

Not in a backyard by any means, but you're only talking about a 1/4 acre per mini which is far easier to obtain and maintain than the acreage requirements for something full size. Just something to keep in mind for the future.
>>
>>2145491
You cheered me up, thanks. I will remember what you said. And I will get my mini horse/donkey someday.
>>
>>2145486
For now, still though you could get a little land in the future/move somewhere more open. Some day anon, good job on being sensible.
>>
>>2145320

They're exaggerating quite a bit - we joke about how ponies are evil geniuses, but you'd have to be incredibly wet to be unable to handle one. They're quite smart and less timid than horses, which means they can be wily in getting what they want and they'll boss an easily frightened child around, but there are also plenty of six year old girls that handle them just fine. They can be naughty, but they're not destructive forces of nature out to ruin your life.

You can't. It takes an extreme amount of inner thigh muscle strength (which you don't have, don't even kid yourself) to ne able to even stay on the damn horse if it goes over a light gallop.

And good luck if you forget to keep your heels down at all times; your foot is going to go through that stirrup and your going to fall off and get dragged.

Your also risking the chance of pissing the horse off and having it rear up on you, which you will fall backwards and possibly break your spine.

If your girlfriend cares at all about you, she'll make you take lessons first.

>>
>>2145921
Even horse vet bills aren't that bad. You can do most of the care yourself. Worm meds 3 times a year (just use a different type of med each of those 3 times so parasites don't become resistant), check their legs and hooves regularly since those are the usual problem spots on horses (or donkeys). Hoof trimming is not so bad. That costs about as much as taking a dog to the groomer. A yearly check up by the vet like you'd do with any other pet costs about the same. The only time equines get crazy expensive vet bills is when you're talking surgery. There are very special requirements for performing surgery on large animals. You wont have that problem with a small donkey though. Any normal vet office will have everything that's required for surgery on a small donkey. Just have to find a vet that handles equines and has a small surgery center.

How often do you have to trim their hooves? How many times per year? And isn't it expensive if your horse has intestinal/stomach problems?
>>
>>2151789

It depends how much you're working the horse, what conditions it's kept in, whether it's shod or not, etc.. Typically you're looking at every 3-6 weeks (6 as a maximum) with a daily hoof care routine. Donkeys are 6-10 weeks, though again it will depend on a lot of factors and still require daily attention.

Yes, vet care can get expensive, but let's be fair. Any animal who needs treatment for something serious can become very pricey very quickly. And it's not as if donkeys are immune to the same intestinal problems horses can get, as well as plenty of (potentially expensive) problems of their own.

Minis live about 30-40 years, provided they have proper care and decent health.

There's an absolute ton of horrendous breeding that you don't see in full-sized animals, though, with the lack of functional concern mixed with an enormous propensity for dwarfism. That can, and often does, drag the lifespan down in a big way.

The American Miniature is essentially an attempt to shrink down a warmblood. They do have an unfortunate tendency to try to mimic the super-typed Arabian look, but they do produce some lovely and functional animals (pic related).

Falabellas can also be pretty nice, though more pony than horse proportions.

>>
>>2159068
They actually aren't. It's pretty hard to get a male zebra to breed anything other than another zebra. The male has to be raised away from its kind or it will imprint on the zebra pattern and won't breed anything else. So if you want a hybrid, you have to play way ahead and imprint the young zebra colt on the type of animal you intend to one day breed him with.
>>
>>2159134
They aren't, though. They don't take commands as well as horses. And they aren't as smooth a ride and their backs aren't built to keep a saddle steady as well (mutton-withered).

>Petting a horses head
You already fucked up. Horses don't like people petting their face.

Most of them like getting their stomach scratched though. You can tell a horse enjoys it if it extends its neck and wiggles its lips a bit. If the stomach doesn't work, try scratching an area the horse tries scratching with its teeth (like how they sometimes nibble their side).
>>
>>2163257
I don't much care if you believe me or not about the zebra hybrid thing, but it's legit. People go apeshit for zebra hybrids (even though they are typically mutton-withered and prone to kick and are harder to train) because ZOMG STRIPES. Fortunately, because the males do prefer their own species, it's harder for asshole backyard breeders to just buy a zebra and start cranking out the zebroids. Also, male zebras are sexually mature much later than horses so you've got to house the violent fucker for way longer than most backyard breeders' attention spans. Two strikes against the casual zebroid breeder. The third one has to do with the subtypes of zebras. The three most common subtypes are the the Grevy's, the Plains, and the Mountain. Of those three, the Grevy's is by far the largest and the best choice to make hybrid riding animals. They're endangered now and very hard to come by.
>>
>>2163546

Wrong number of chromosomes. Doesn't work with a female zebra and male horse. Almost never results in a viable fetus and those born never make it to maturity.

It can work in the reverse, too, as seen in the difficulty to produce mules. Mares can be very particular about who they'll allow to mount them. If the stud is especially noisy and/or aggressive (as both donkeys and zebras often are), it's likely to spook or annoy her to the point she'll either fight him off or refuse to "show". Even with tools like hobbles, it can be incredibly difficult to breed a mare who is unwilling or only begrudgingly allowing herself to be mounted.

Unless the stud has been raised to essentially believe he's a horse (and yes, the breeding preference thing also applies to jacks), live cover can become so difficult that the only option is to hand-breed. Since most backyard breeders are the 'just turn them both loose' sort, their attempts more often result in injuries than foals.

Arguably my sample size is small, but I've never met a horse who didn't like the flat of their face (I don't know the technical term for this) scratched. It never got the lip wiggling response, but some of them would prod me for more after I stopped.
>>
>>2163723
In general horses do not like their faces/head being touched, but get indirectly trained to like since they often get rewards like treats and stuff.

>>
>>2163705
Zebroid BYBers are even more likely to be pasture breeders because they don't instill ground manners in the zebra stud - too much work - so they're often unhandleable at breeding. So they're relying on the zebra's desire and ability to get the job done on a mare loose in the pasture. Often doesn't work. The mare gets pissed and double-barrels the aggressive, obnoxious, expensive zebra stud and now you've got a vet bill on top of things.

>>2163705
Why are some mares hard to breed? Aren't they all hormonal and horny during estrus, besides isn't their life goal to have babies?
>>
mare + donkey = mule, stallion + female donkey = hinny. Why this? Why do we get a different baby if we used the same animals in both combinations, just the opposite sex?
>>
>>2164324

All mares are different. Some are willing and able the second the cycle starts, some are very difficult to tell when they're actually in estres, some are incredibly selective about who they'll allow to mount them. This is why you use a teaser stallion.

But really, being more selective about an initial mounting is not bad at all evolutionarily. Using the best stud possible is much better for the offspring than just going with whoever happens to wander by. It's only now in the incredibly artificial environment that they live in that it's being considered to be troublesome, and not by the horse.

>>2164325

Hinnys and mules are different animals, not just different genders. It has to do with the way the genetics line up. Conception is easier when the lower number of genes (the horse has 62, the donkey has 64) belongs to the mother than the father. There's an argument that this also causes hinnys to lack hybrid vigor, though when critically analyzed this doesn't hold up and is more likely to come from a smaller womb producing a smaller foal than any real issue.

If you looked at hinnys and mules standing next to each other, a lot of time it's difficult and sometimes impossible to tell them apart. Really, the biggest difference is mom. A mule will be more like a horse because it was raised by (and probably around) horses, and likewise a hinny will likely behave more like a donkey.

Yes, it's real. Good studs are very valuable, and even restrained an unreceptive mare can deal a lot of damage, so you use a teaser to check her out beforehand. His life sucks, but it's the only near-surefire way to test.

No you're not looking , or you ARE looking?

Nah, I've seen 60+ old ladies and guys pick up horse riding, albeit on really calm and kind horses. Wish i had my video from an old lady riding her Icelandic Pony during barrel racing. It was a gymkhana (semi-casual competition) so she just just went at a trot/pace (gear 2) and looked hilarious on her pony.

I learned later she just got into horses and was fulfilling her dream of always wanting her own pony. The icelandic looked like an oversized shetland pony.

Here's some advice, take classes at a nearby community place or college if they have them with horses. If you're loaded though, can probably afford a personal trainer which usually turns out much better.

Also: DO NOT GET PUSHED INTO COMPETITION OR PERFORMANCE UNLESS YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE. I really fucking hate pushy trainers that want you to get on a 3 year old, freshly broke horse because they want you to perform down the road. That shit is unsafe and I've seen too many new riders/horse people get turned off because of the bad experiences resulting from new horses/aggressive trainers.

Oh and another thing: don't take yelling as an offense. You're gonna hear alot of it due to trainers/teachers having to yell across areas. And learn to keep looking forward/where you need to look even if someone is talking to you.

Anything is possible, but that doesn't make it likely. Rearing exposes the stomach and is a very vulnerable position for the horse. Unless they feel (due to fear or aggression) that there's no other option, or they're specifically trained to do it, they most likely aren't going to.

I'm all for requiring a license for horse ownership. I'm against the licensing, This would further enforce the rich person only stereotype that often associated with owning horses. Not to say people shouldn't get into horses without knowing the maintenance costs, but a problem here in the U.S. are anything related to horses is inflated in costs because they know rich people are involved.

I hear horse ownership in European countries has a shitton of rules on the flipside.

Besides that, anyone else a fan of hairy asses?
>>
>2168044
So then make the expense about the same as obtaining a driver's license. If you can't afford a car, you probably shouldn't have a horse.
>>
>>2168047
However, a horse BREEDING license should be outrageously expensive - to the point where you will barely, if at all, make a profit. This will ensure only the highest quality animals are bred and will cut down dramatically on the wasteful and abusive breeding practices that are rampant in the industry and lead to so much cruelty and death. If you can't get dime-a-dozen horses to throw away on the race track, I gurantee you'd see a lot more self-policing in the racing industry, and you'd never see a horse under 4 or 5, or with injuries, on the racetrack, because they're not easily replaced.
>>
>>2168044

That's what I mean, generalizing like that.

That's like saying people here in the U.S. care jackshit about the welfare of animals that provide the meat that they eat as well. On top of that, depends on the european country as well.

In MY opinion, you're starting to sound like an PETA-obsessed animal rights activist.

Oh god, that bridle is back. That poor mule.

>In MY opinion, you're starting to sound like an PETA-obsessed animal rights activist.

No, in that case I'd be saying humanity should go extinct and that I'd love to torture and rape your family since you're an animal oppressor or some shit.

In general, food animals are not treated as kindly as other animals. At the end of the day, the overwhelming majority of people eating a hamburger aren't thinking about whether or not the meat they're consuming came from an animal that lived a peaceful life or had a merciful death. We just don't care (myself included.) We see food, we eat it, most of us don't ponder that shit or really care beyond that. That's just a fact, that doesn't make me a bleeding heart PETA fag. Given this, I don't see why Europe would show more concern for the welfare of their horses (which are seen as a food animal there) than America. I'd be genuinely happy to be proven wrong, but you're just being retarded instead of explaining why horses are allegedly treated better in Europe.
>>
>>2168074
>horses (which are seen as a food animal there)
You aren't very bright, are you? Did it ever occur to you, that, you know, maybe, not ALL horses are food animals in Europe?
I don't know about other countries, but eating horse meat is not nearly as common as eating other kinds of meat in my European country. In fact, I don't know anybody who does.

And some people eating them does not mean that most people do not care for them.
>>
>>2168078
And what country do you live in? France and Belgium, for example, are known for consuming large quantities of horse meat. I'm not European. I've been asking you to educate me rather than keep up with these knee-jerk reactions.

why the fuck do people still do this shit? there is literally no fucking reason when there are fucking microchips available cheaply

>They eat horse meat in pretty much every European country, so I don't see why they'd care what happens to them while they're alive
You don't care about the food you put into your mouth? The horse meat scandal in Europe wasn't about the fact that there was extra horse meat in pre-packed food: it was about the horse meat being completely untraceable and uncertified.

In the EU even beasts bread for slaughter each have a "passport" listing where they were born, from what sire, all their immunization shots, what antibiotics they were on as well as a complete medical history. All this because EUropeans care about the healthiness of the food they eat.
>>
>>2168170
How are they handling all the goats being raised off the books by immigrants?
>>
>>2168142
As if removing a chip was even necessary to render it unreadable.
>>
>>2168170
I care about it being disease free. I don't care how it was treated otherwise. That's my entire point. I don't care if my hamburger spent its entire life being beaten and confined. Most people don't care about such things with food animals. Which again was my entire point. Because of this I have no reason to believe Europeans are more humane to horses than Americans.
>>
>>2168179
Even moderately educated Europeans know that animals raised in unending suffering are less healthy, thus more pumped up with antibiotics to compensate for their numerous antibiotics. It's enlightened self-interest but we still give a damn about how our steak lived its life.

Yes.

Yes. You should brag to your horse friends that your mare farts on you. They'll be impressed that you've formed that kind of bond with her so quickly.

I don't know. I'm a little skeptical.

These guys are trying to ruse you anon, don't fall for it. Lots of horses will pass gas when someone is messing with any part of their hind end. It doesn't mean anything.
>>
>>2168139
Why.
>>
>>2168225
Actually, horses pass gas a lot period. Likely just a result of their size. Provided it's not happening every other second, it's healthy for a horse to be doing so.
>>
>>2168456
If I recall correctly, horses ferment in their large intestine since they don't have a pre-stomach fermentation chamber like cows do. This naturally results in a lot of gas, and the easiest escape is a fart.
>>
Horses farting is a good thing since they can easily colic (lethal stomache) from not passing it.

I weigh 270 and ride. My horses have never had sore backs or lameness issues, but I'm also an extremely experienced rider. A heavier experienced rider isn't as bad on a horse's back as a lighter inexperienced rider.

That being said, if you're heavy AND inexperienced, don't even think about it. You're going to hurt the horse and yourself.

How could I get some experience with horses without owning them? Not just riding and stuff but learning how to care for them too, I've got a few acres of land and I'd like to raise horses someday but I want some hands on experience before jumping straight in
>>
>>2168833

I know a couple of places near me that do day courses which covers basics of care and the like. Not sure how common it is in other lands.
>>
>>2168835
That sounds like exactly what I'm looking for, where should I look to see if there's something like that near me?
>>
>>2168833
Find a stable or maybe a college that offers lessons. Make sure you let them know you want to learn about proper horse care in addition to riding, so they can plan your lessons accordingly.

Don't buy a horse until you've been riding/caring for them for at least a year and are absolutely sure you're prepared for the commitment. A lot of people aren't and get stuck with an animal they don't want and can't get rid of, and it's the horse that suffers when that happens.

Do NOT try to ride without proper lessons, you will get hurt, likely badly.

DO invest in a good pair of boots and a proper equestrian helmet.

DO ensure you have adequate fencing on your property. Barbed wire is NEVER acceptable fencing for horses under any circumstances, even if it's only a single strand across the top.

DO be prepared to spend a few thousand dollars a year on your horse, minimum, for feed, hay, vet, and farrier expenses.

When you are finally ready to buy, DO NOT buy a young horse as your first horse. Find something around 10 years old that's been around the block and knows how to take care of a newbie rider. If you're keeping a horse on your own property, be aware that horses are social animals and NEED a pasture mate, whether that's another horse, donkey, goat, etc. They will become depressed and insane if they're deprived of proper social interaction with at least one herd mate.

If by "raise" you're even THINKING about breeding AT ANY POINT IN THE FUTURE, please fucking don't. We have too many unwanted horses as is.

Be aware that horses can live to be in their 30's if properly cared for, and don't buy one if you're not willing to care for that animal for the rest of its life. They are not toys to be thrown away when you get bored of them.

I'm sure there's a ton of stuff I'm forgetting here, but these are the first points that jump into my mind. Good luck, horses are a ton of work but you'd be hard pressed to find another hobby/interest/passion that's more rewarding.
>>
>>2168838
Thanks for the advice, I don't plan on breeding them, just raising them. I've got barbed wire up right now but I'd heard you can't use it with horses and I've been planning to switch to wood for a while now
>>
>>2168790
Depends on horse size and you. Try riding a large quarterhorse, half draft, or even a draft horse. Going at a walk is a ok and not riding all day.
>>
>>2168847
Barbed wire can work, and it depends on what kind especially. If you want your horse to stay super pretty though definitely suggest against it, since some horses will use it for scratchies on purpose and scar up. If you're okay with that, tons of horses are fine with it.

Wood might be a very bad idea in the long run, especially if they get a flavoring for it i.e. wood chewing. I would suggest piping/paneling but definitely more expensive.
>>
>>2168855
Interesting, I hadn't considered the possibility of horses eating my fence, I'll do some shopping around and see what I can afford
>>
>>2168865
If you're definitely a DIY, its also an option. Just seen so many people, especially rich spoiled folk, who go with wood and regret it when they need to keep getting the fencing repaired cause that really nice wood they used happened to be very flavorful to the horses.
>>
>>2168870
Build a wood fence with an electric strand across the top rail. Problem solved.

If you've ever seen a panicked horse run through a barbed wire fence... to say it gets ugly quick is the understatement of the century.

The convenience/cheapness of barbed wire is not worth the risk when all it takes is one mishap to cost your horse's life or several thousands in vet bills.
>>
>>2168855
Yeah, last wednesday I saw a horse chewing on a wood fence, he even ate the chunks.
>>
>>2168837

>>
>>2168874
>.
It all depends on how used to being around the fence the horses are. The ones on the other side of my road are fairly acclimatized to their barbed wire fence (along with an electric wire) and they respect it. But they're fairly well kept, pull sleighs & get changed pasture often so it might just be the social deterant that stops them from escaping.
