1hr a day isnt much exercise really, I walk my 6 month old Mastiff puppy for 20 minutes to the beach then let him sniff around on his own terms at the beach on a long line for 20 minutes then its a 20 minute walk back.

Ridgebacks will need more than that I reckon.

Id look at getting a decent behaviourlist so now so you can start as you mean to go on, you will note I didnt say "trainer". Also socialise as much as you can. You can establish dominance by ignoring him for short periods randomly. It will put your puppy at ease and make him calm to know he has an alpha at the head of the pack, our dogs are 6 months old and the first night we got back from our classes it was literally like being red pilled, after our first class we have no more jumping up, no more whining at the door when we put them outside, both are doing sit, stays and come, sits and I have even trained one to wait for his food and only eat when I say, the other one is a little more headstrong but its making progress. Its all about consistency and you will get out of it what you put into it.

Dogs also cant process information while theyre walking so after all his vaccinations go to a park or a cafe and just sit there quietly and let him absorb them world, if they seem agitated the best thing you can do is ignore them and project confidence. If you fuss over them theyre just going to think your both whiny little puppies and he might think he needs to step up as alpha.

OP is talking about when the dog is more developed, he obviously isnt taking an 8 week old puppy on hour long walks. I was making a comparison that my 6 month old takes an hour (which I limit for his joints, he would go on). But hey keep spreading the misinformation of not walking large and giant breeds, they just get fat and have no muscle conditon around their joints leading to dysplasia.

I have a mix and she sinks her teeth into my pit at every little argument. Both my girls are battlescarred because my ridgeback absolutely will NOT take any shit.

These dogs do better in groups of many dogs or they get neurotic and overprotective. Do yourself a favor and get something else if you arent used to difficult dogs. Because this dog is a headache

Instead look up professional, been to college or apprenticed with someone, trainers. Some are on YouTube, but some aren't.

You can also help yourself out by picking up a book or two.

Also, this video might help you a lot. These are guard dogs, but the WAY they train their dogs is pretty enlightening if you got a few minutes to watch it.

They work, but only on some dogs. Positive reinforcement works on every dog. Why use techniques like that when positive reinforcement is just as good, and is way more fun, less stressful, and all around more enjoyable for both you and the dog?

do you have experience with working tier puppies before? a normal puppy is difficult for someone who had never had one. Working dogs are completely different from normal dogs too. They are more stubborn and like to listen to themselves more. Start traing right away , this puppy will take 3-5 hours of your day for affection,training, potty , putting it in a crate a night , etc. Crate is recommended so your dog/puppy knows not to pee at night(it will not pee in the place it is sleeping and then know not to pee at night). 1 month or so is how long i crate train. If you find it easier you can crate their whole life , i don't as i like to have my dog as companion and guard dog at night. If you have never trained a large/working dog before , don't recommend a rhodesian. It seems like you are already set on getting it so def take to training facility.Positive reinforcement works for tricks but def use negative if your dog/puppy bite or growls at you(even playfully as when you dog grows up "playfully" hurts)

sorry for large post but i've seen so many friends and family not properly take care of their dogs/puppies and have to take them to the pound due to destruction or biting. Source:20+ years of owning working type dogs , mostly rottweilers

The wolf pack alpha thing is bullshit, though. Wolf packs are made of a breeding pair and their offspring. Only in captivity does an Alpha and Beta hierarchy occur, and even then it has to be forced. The study that produced that misinformed view was severely flawed.

Im not only using negative reinforcement, the majority is positive reinforcement. The corrections are for bad behaviour like scratching the back door to come in and jumping up on furniture, when we want them to do something its all positive and just ignore them if they dont stay or come on command. But if he is jumping up on people etc its a shake on the rattle can which we are pairing with the word NO! Its effective for our 2 dogs and both dogs are calm and a pleasure to have in the home now.

Not saying that doesn't work anon, but you can also use the method of stopping them before they even get to that point, and then showing them what you want them to do. Its kind of a 'don't wait till the bad thing happens to correct it' method.

I mean, you CAN wait until the pup is jumping on someone, have everyone ignore it till it stops, and then reward. This does work, but the downside is that you're basically waiting for the dog to calm down which takes a while, and it may take repeated sessions for him to learn that he gets attention faster by not jumping.

Now, if you take the time to do baby steps and show him that you don't want him jumping, then he not only learns that he gets praise for not jumping, he also learns that that is what YOU want to see him do. It's a bit faster and usually with most dogs takes less sessions. You also are teaching the dog to look to you, the handler, for guidance about how to act in certain situations versus startling them to get them to stop.

This can cone into play much better when you have a situation that you can't ignore or startle the dog out of, like if they intensely focused on a cat or another dog. By taking a few steps back and being able to get their eyes on you again, you can better communicate to them what you would rather thry do, versus what you don't want. It's just easier to communicate in general.

I had a pair of Rhodesians.

Gentle with smaller dogs that are a part of their household BUT if your neighbor has a dog they will hunt it in a pack.

Had to give them away because they would fuck up the neighbor's dog no matter the fences we put up and the like.

Also, they can read a person's character and will bark their heads off at people that come around your place and they do not like them.
