Those litter boxes are filthy. Someone please scoop them
>>
My cat has recently started shitting and pissing right next to his litter box instead of in it. Is this caused by the same anxiety/fear issues that cause cats to do this in random areas of the house, or is he just being a cunt?
>>
>>2132673
When I got a kitten he started peeing right in front of the litter box and it was because my older cat was bullying him. I gave the kitten to my mom and neither her or me have had that problem since, so I'd say anxiety and stress

And cats don't do things just to be cunts. Animals in general do not
>>
>>2132683
Hmmm, well the problem is roughly coincidental with us getting a new rug for the living room which he doesn't like too much for some reason. Anything we can do to get him to accept the rug?
>>
Someone pls help
I got a cat last night, he's a rescue. He's about a year old and he's extremely sweet but oh my god he has not stopped meowing. I haven't gotten any sleep. I've tried everything. I understand it's his first night and I expected him to explore/meow but not this badly.
Until I can trust him alone with my chinchilla I have to keep him in the bedroom at night and he will scream at the door to be let out, either to walk around and meow or to stalk my chinchilla.
How do I teach him not to attack/stalk my chinchilla and how do I get him to stop screaming all damn night?
>>
>>2133092
Buy and install some Feliway diffusers. It is an artificial cat pheromone that calms them down and helps them settle. They are sort of pricey, but absolutely work. This will help with the meowing.

It will also help with the chinchilla, but the end solution to that problem is time. Until the cat learns the chinchilla isn't prey, he is going to stalk him/her and want him/her as a snack. But once he gets used to him/her, he won't care.

My 14 year old cat died today, his name was Tipsy and he was super friendly and sweet, would climb up onto your chest and dribble around your neck just because he loved human attention that much. I used to think he was like a wise old man, like a mini buddha cat that would lay out in the sun all day. The neighbours had some family round along with a dog and he jumped the fence and attacked him while he was sunbathing. Unfortunately by the time the dog was pulled away it was too late, and he laid down and just passed away. His eyes were still open and although there were dots of blood in his white fur I couldn't see any open wounds (although I didn't really look) so I'm not sure exactly what happened.

I feel like utter shit and I still can't believe it. My eyes hurt from crying so much.

Just got a kitten

Couple of questions:
>How do I get her to stop biting the ever living shit out of me?

>How do I train her to be an indoor outdoot cat?

She's only 9 weeka old
>>
>>2133374
She's just playing and she'll stop as she get older. Since she's wrestling, make a squeaking/meow noise and she'll know she's hurting you and will stop since it'll sound similar to if she was wrestling with another cat and she hurt them while playing

Keep your cat inside. They hunt for fun and hurt the environment, can get parasites, get toxoplasmosis, get hit by cars, attacked by animals, and be hurt by humans who hate cats (lots of ppl will shoot or hurt any cats they see outdoors no matter if it's a pet or not)

If you want her to go outside harness train her and you can also get her used to going to the park if just walking around your yard is boring for you (I take my cat to the local park) although she'll want to patrol her territory, or get a catio or cat proof fence. I had a calico kitten and she escaped outside ONCE and I found her an hour later dead on the road, run over. Don't let your cats outside
>>
>>2133374
>How do I get her to stop biting the ever living shit out of me?
If she bites you, yelp and ignore her.

>How do I train her to be an indoor outdoot cat?
Keep her indoors.
>>
>>2133386
>>2133389
I had an outdoor cat for years though and she lived until 15. There's no way in hell I'm buying my car a harness and walking her. I let her out on my balcony this morning but she kept trying to go across to my neighbors balcony who already hate me.

She's still got her front claws so I'm not worried about her getting into fights.
>>
>>2133367
i hope you go after the owners of the dog
>>
>>2133404
Well, I'm actually not really sure what to do now. I'm going to report it but I asked them not to keep the dog unsupervised in their garden and they said sure, and then they went on to leave it alone, which was when it jumped over the fence. I have a dog myself that actually tried to stop the other dog and protect my cat.
>>
>>2132692
Is it a brand new rug or second hand? Either way your cat might not like the way it smells so maybe clean it with an enzyme cleaner or put catnip on it?

>>2133392
Just because your cat lived to 15 doesn't mean this one will (indoor cats live on average from 12-20 years anyways)

And even if she has her claws she can still die, contact diseases like FeLV, or get infected wounds

Keep your cat inside
>>
>>2133464
Brand new, but imported so it will no doubt have wacky foreign smells on it.
When you say put catnip on it, do you mean rub catnip into the rug and then vacuum the solid bits out?

Mine is doing that. She's really old and has suffered from a lot of problems and probably wont live much longer. Its scary and sad but nothing can be done. Shes 13 years old. Really overweight even after putting her on a more strict diet. Sort fo lethargic. Hasnt beeen eating the last few days. My parents can afford to take her to the vet. So I know its coming soon. Im having a hard time with it because shes my baby, but I know she has suffered so much. Had surgeries and stuff. Because shes always been in bad health. Im so sad though.

Anyone know what to do about morning meowers?

My cat goes to sleep well and snuggles up to me as soon as it is bedtime, but wakes me up at around 5:30 am. Even after feeding her and trying to keep her calm, she won't stop meowing/purring. I don't know what she wants exactly. She's pretty talkative in general, but it's extra bad in the mornings.

We're considering getting a squirt bottle (dont want to, but not sure how to get her to quiet).
The usual routine is she wakes me, I try to fall back asleep for 20min, get up and feed her, shut the door and go back to bed as she meows loudly outside the door until I actually get up around 7 am.

Well she's gone now :/
I'm going to miss her so fucking much. But she was suffering so much through her life so thats my only consolation. Its over now. 13 years is a long time.
>>
>>2133285
What? I never heard of such a thing. It's not like a child where you are given a birth certificate. Both my cats started as strays and no vet ever asked me to prove I owned them. People bring in strays to get neutered all the time, I thought that was just an accepted practice for people who could afford to do that.
>>
>>2133453
I've seen many cases on People's Court about this. You can sue for vet / burial costs and emotional pain and suffering, but the latter is harder to prove. Unfortunately pets are only seen in the eyes of the law as "property" so even though they are living companions it's hard to really take legal revenge on the dog's owners since the law only is there to let you recoup what you lost financially. But if you can prove they were negligent you might get awarded something extra. Not to make this be about "winning" but more making the dog owner's suffer some so they won't do this again.
>>
How do I get my cat to play with toys? Nothing seems to be catching his attention. NOTHING
>>
>>2134500
Catnip? Some cats just dont fuck with shit though. Mine only really played when she was a kitten and for the last 10 years or so its been hit and miss, mostly miss. But she had a little straw pillow filled with catnip and she'd lay in the floor and attack it and rub her face against it for hours every day before she got sick. Whats the breed?

My parents' cat Squeaker. Last night we had to put him down, his health had taken a serious turn for the worse. He was sixteen. He got diagnosed with diabetes about five years ago and was doing fine but the past few months he started going downhill, loosing weight and muscle mass in his hind quarters. He will be sorely missed. He was a real big sweetie.

I'm in need of a little help on keeping my cat entertained. I try to play with him at least an hour a day but he seems bored of the same games we play :/ (the house has plenty of different cat toys thru the house). He loves to chase around these balls with with bells in it or hide and seek. Any more suggestions??

Also, I figured it'd be nice to mix up his food a bit since I was thinking dry cat food has to be depressing to eat every day. So I went out and bought him soup based food for lunch and some like fish or chicken and beef mixture for supper. Bit sure if it's healthy for him to eat it everyday or not x_x thanks

16 is a good age for a cat, especially considering the beetus. Sorry for your loss. Squeaker was handsome.
>>
>>2134567
He's really pretty. I'm kind of worried to read about him though because mine's had diabetes for about 6 years and has lost some weight recently too, with some parts of his fur falling out. He just got a full blood panel done and it looks like his diabetes is under control but I know with cats it can turn in a moment's notice. I'm sorry you lost him, 16 is just too young. My other cat just died a month or two shy of 16 and he still felt like a little baby to me.
>>
>>2134570
I don't know about feeding him soup, a lot of those soups are heavy in sodium and can do some real damage long term.

What I used to do with my cat was take little stickers and stick them to him. He'd go crazy spinning in circles trying to get them off, and when he finally did he'd bite at it and I'd flick the sticker back up onto him. It was a lot of fun.
>>
>>2134570
My cat finds great enjoyment/hatred out of a christmas decoration teddy that plays jinglebells. If I squeeze if she'll come running and pick it up in her mouth and try to hide it elsewhere. Scared the shit out of me in the middle of the night though when she set it off.

My little buddy's about 13, don't remember exactly. He's always been a really chill cat and we hardly ever even heard his voice for the first 10 or so years of his life. In the last month or two though, he's started meowing a lot. It seems to happen more often right after he's been fed, or randomly in the middle of the night, and I don't know why. I'm going to have to live like a poor person for a few weeks and take him to a vet if he doesn't get any better.

wouldnt worry too much unless the meows are different in tone than normal such as deeper or higher pitched
or if they are accompanied by growling which could be a sign of pain

otherwise some cats are just chattery and will even talk in their sleep like humans
>>
>>2134670
But that's the thing. The fact that he's meowing at all is different than normal. As I said, he's been a chill and quiet cat for most of his life.

I just recently rescued a 7wk old and we had a Leukemia/FIV test, 2 treatments of FeLV, 3 of FVCRP, Drontal tabs, and Rabies vaccine.

It cost around $165 for a clean bill of health. Keep in mind she had worms and was abandoned outside. We were being extra cautious, considering she had surgery to remove a gangrenous front leg.
>>
My cat is dying of kidney failure as I type. I know I should take him to a vet to have him put to sleep, but he used the last of his strength to crawl to his favorite sleeping spot and I don't want his last few moments in a strange place filled with barking dogs.
I've already given him all of the pain meds he had left (1ml of buprenex), is there anything else I can do to make this easier on him?

That's not bad. I was thinking back to when my cat had kidney failure and just running the tests to find out her kidneys were fucked cost me like $400. I figured all of the surgery + shots would run me around $500 but maybe not.

>>2135140
That sucks man. I went through the same thing (>>2135093) The first time I went to put her down, she fought the vets, which fucked me up, I tried to prolong her life with fluids and kidney food, tl;d;r she ended up dying at home about a month later.

I would just keep him company. I regret not being there when my cat passed; I knew she was really sick, my plan was to take her to the vet the next day and maybe she wouldn't fight it that time, but she was gone before the next morning. So yeah if I could go back in time I would have sat with her all night.

>>2135146
Cats are so low-maintenace though.

>>
>>2134878
I made a post like that a couple threads ago. I know it's sad to see so many but when it happens you just want to tell someone, even if it's anons on the internet. You feel better doing it and letting it out. It's comforting in a way to know other people are going through it too so you're not alone.
>>
>>2135140
A lot of places have vets that will come to your home to do it. If not your regular vet then another specialty service (who is also a vet though) will come. That's how I had it done. You pay more, but it's worth it for their comfort. Sorry about your cat, mine just died of kidney failure too.
>>
>>2134660
Hey, them's some nice kitty digs.

Your handsome gent is getting up there a bit in age, so it may be that he's just going a little senile, or else starting to lose his eyesight/hearing. How have his appetite and weight been? Vocalizing can be indicative of hyperthyroidism, which is common in aging cats; in this case he would likely be eating ravenously but either not gaining weight or actively losing it. Hypertension is another possibility (and can be secondary to both hyperthyroidism and kidney disease). Both of these conditions are treatable, don't worry.

Good luck in any case.
>>
>>2135239
>Vocalizing can be indicative of hyperthyroidism

Mine was just diagnosed with this and for a while he's been yowling at his water before he takes a drink. I can't figure out why.
>>
>>2135037
Put a box under or near the bed.

>>2135093
Hmm, let's see...
Neuter: $100 / Spay $160
(These costs can be mitigated or sometimes even completely disregarded if you have low-income spay/neuter programs in your area. Check around.)
Deworming: $40 (for the standard two rounds)
Distemper vaccine (3-4 injections): $30-$60
Rabies (1 injection): $20
There will probably be an extra $50 in there for office calls and exam fees, depending on your vet.

Optional:
FeLV/FIV test (just get it done): ~$50
Feline leukemia vaccine (2 injections, only necessary if cat goes outdoors): ~$35
8 months flea/tick protection for outdoor cats (assuming Frontline/Revolution/Advantage, don't waste money on shitty knock-offs): $100
Microchip: $40?

So all this plus maintenance food/litter costs. Kittens and puppies are expensive little shits even provided they don't end up having any medical disasters in their first year. (One of mine managed to eat an antidepressant and racked up a $500 emergency clinic bill, because of fucking course it happened on a Sunday morning.)

>>2135108

No. They're intelligent and affectionate enough
>>
>>2135247
I've heard of this with hyperT/renal failure cats. Both diseases will cause an increase in thirst drive and some of them can get pretty weird about water, almost compulsive. I used to look after a hyperthyroid cat who, after diagnosis, stopped wanting to drink out of his water bowl and started sitting on the bathroom counter and yowling until someone came to turn on the tap for him.

How often do you change the water? A pet fountain may help with this behavior. They're generally recommended in cases where cats should be encouraged to drink more anyway. Otherwise, it may abate on its own as his thyroid levels begin to stabilize.
>>
>>2135265
Water gets changed about every 2-3 hours because he eats a lot so he inevitably gets food bits in the water so I need to put down fresh after almost every meal. He's been on methimazole about a week so we'll see if it helps.
>>
>>2135260
The thing about cats that makes them differ from dogs is that 90%+ of pet cats are generic "domestic (short, medium, long)-hair" rather than a specific human-controlled breed, therefore their temperaments are much more widely variable. I intentionally look for well-socialized, affectionate cats when I go to adopt. My current three greet me at the door, follow me around the house, and spend every evening lap-surfing between me and my family members. One in particular cuddles/sleeps with me nightly while his brother and sister spoon on the couch downstairs. All three quickly befriend strangers and do great with kids, and have never intentionally broken skin by biting or scratching. They just aren't completely and utterly dependent upon me and my attentions in the way dogs are, and I prefer that.

Intelligence doesn't really matter to me. One of mine is clever enough to open cupboards and screen doors, which is actually more of an annoyance than anything since it means we need to baby-lock specific doors. With dogs though, I do really like that when you point at something, pups understand to look at what you're gesturing at instead of your finger.
>>
>>2135300
I too needed child locks because one of my assholes would let his brothers out and help himself to the leftovers in the fridge.
>>
>>2135239
That was the first day I got them kitty digs, and also the last time he went in it. He doesn't seem to like it for whatever reason, but it's still around because he still uses the scratching post. I am going to get him to a vet if he keeps it up much longer, just need to wait for pay day. His appetite has been about normal. He's lost a bit of weight, but I assumed that was largely as a result of us moving out on our own last year, so my father isn't overfeeding him anymore.

Sorry about your grandma. Don't worry, it's not usually anywhere as bad in cats as in humans. I've never heard of a case where they stopped recognizing their owners, for example. I've known three senile cats and they just did kooky shit like frequently begging for food because they'd forgot they'd already been fed, or the night spooks like you've been experiencing. One started missing the box when he urinated - I mean, he'd just stand there in the box and piss right over the edge, then dig around in the clean litter like he was covering it. But they always recognized me and their owners and were just as loving until the days they died.

I've heard putting in a nightlight can comfort cats that night-yowl.

Yours may not but if he is receptive, you can gently pet him a little. Just give him that reassurance. I hope yours doesnt start crying out really loudly like mine did. Hope its peaceful for both of you.

My cat. She's 15 and likes to spend the vast majority of her time outside. I think she must sleep literally near 22 hours a day, though. All she does is lounge in different spots outside, in the yard, porch, garden, neighbors' yards or sometimes inside in halls or beds.

She's pretty thin, though, and I'm worried her health might steadily be declining. She's never had any health issues. A few scraps and wounds here and there and last year she got a nasty infection and fever from a fight, but seems to be okay. A few weeks ago something happened in the morning where just after she woke up (had been sleeping in my room) she started gagging and vomiting constantly for around 30 minutes. Started having diarrhea too. I took her to the vet and they didn't seem to find anything wrong with her so that was weird, but no problems since.

The dry foods are formulated to meet their nutritional needs (especially a decent one not the lowest brands at crap stores), and messing with their diet can really upset their tummies easily. If you want to introduce some good wet food to give him every now and then maybe look into Weruva Cats in the Kitchen packets. My cats go insane for the Mack Jack and Sam and 1 if by Land ones. Or even just give freeze dried chicken or shrimp as treats. Though, if he's eating fine (most cats are grazers anyway) and not getting overweight you might want to get him hooked on the goodies since it can make them not want their dry.

Also what kinda ways do you play with him? Do you use a wand toy and make him run and such? Our new kitten has a crazy athletic build and I could make him pant til he's about to pass out and he would still keep going. Hard to keep up with him lol.

I don't want to argue or cause any rage, but I had a weirdly great experience with an outdoor cat I want to share. For the record, my cats now are strictly indoors.

>used to have huge black outdoor cat named Nico
>Nico always brought home various fish, rodents, lizards, snakes, and bunnies
>we have never seen him hunt, eat, or bring us any birds
>we have literally dozens of birdhouses and so many birds come every day
>we finally get blue birds, which we've been waiting for, they're not so common
>every year the blue birds would nest in the same house, but corvids and raccoons would pester them
>from day 1, Nico would lay near the bluebird nest and would fuck up all the animals that attacked the blue birds
>he has never once messed with them himself

Nico loved blue birds?

Have any of you guys adopted from Petsmart?
I went there today and found this cutie and I plan on going there tomorrow to fill out an adoption application.

I have no idea what to expect and I'm scared I won't get him. I have read that they could do a home inspection and I'm wondering if thats ever happened to any of you guys?

Currently I'm living with a friend for the summer. His apartment complex is pet friendly but I'm scared they won't approve me since it's not my own place.

I find it really hard to believe the minimum wage employees of Petsmart are going to come inspect your home. I kind of wish they would though, it would prevent a lot of animals going to bad homes. Not talking about you, just in general.

How do cats and dogs end up in Petsmarts though? Are they bred for the purpose of being sold there or did their old owners just not be able to keep them anymore? I never thought about it before.

He's really cute though.

Found my old camera today and snapped a quick pic of my seven year old Yoky. She's pretty average looking. She tends to stay indoors. Loves to hang out in the walkway outside when I leave the door open during the day, but goes inside when I tell her to. She has a pretty lax personality.

My little buddy likes a fresh breeze too, so I'm going to need to talk to my next door neighbor. With my condo's floor plan, he and I share a large balcony separated down the middle with a divider. Problem is, the divider doesn't go all the way down to the floor, and I wouldn't put it past my little doofus to wriggle under it while exploring. I'll need to see if the neighbor is cool with my cat possibly winding up on his side of the divider and if he has any animals to be worried about before I decide whether or not to let him outside.

I don't have to worry to much about her. When I let her out she just stay in sight in the walkway. She'll just lay down on the welcome rug or look through the railings. She's very timid when it comes to going downstairs so I don't worry if she goes far. The neighbors and their kids don't bother her so I don't worry about her either, and if something does happen she'll just walk back inside and she sleeps on the ottoman.

Went to the vet because my cat literally scratched a patch of fur off herself, and apparently she has fleas.
So, my vet sold me one portion of Broadline, and said that this should be enough to get rid of them.

Is this true, or should I do more? She's an indoor cat, no idea how she even got fleas.
>>
I'm not sure what to do with this cat but he's driving me insane. I've never had a cat so ridiculous. He doesn't listen, he attacks me if I move him away from something and try to redirect him. It's not even playful, he will actually come after me if I tell him no even though I try to be gentle and calm. He never does it to my boyfriend, who is much harsher than I am.
I feel bad because we've had him for a week now but he just keeps getting worse, it's like his brain dead or something. You can say no and move him and he will keep trying until you finally lock him in another room. The person I got him from couldn't handle him and just wanted to get rid of him as quickly as possible, she made it out like he was great but it's very obvious now.
He's awful. Is it wrong to rehome a cat after a week? I feel so bad but I cannot handle him and I really think he would do better if he lived with other cats.
>>
>>2136132
>I have read that they could do a home inspection
Considering they have so many animals that they literally hav to kill some weekly to keep the number down,i doubt that. The conditions at my local petsmart are absolutely shit as well. They take care of the animals on display just barely. And I do mean just barely. So they have no room to judge unless someone is super unfit to adopt. Which is unlikely.

Lots of toys, two beds, his carrier and he can pretty much go wherever he wants. I can't leave him alone for even a minute. I went to get some water and turned around and he was climbing on my chinchillas cage trying to get in, so I have to pick him up to remove him in a lot of situations but I'm always calm and I'm gentle because I don't want to scare him. I keep trying to redirect him with toys instead but he fixates on things and will not back off no matter what. We don't want to give up on him, we like him a lot but it's like he has split personalities. He's extremely sweet sometimes but then he'll be laying next to you and then smack the shit out of you and attack you for no reason. You don't even have to move. He'll put his ears back, stare you down and beat the shit out of you and then go back to normal.

One of my cats is 17-18 years old. She has lost weight, is slow to move, and is always breathing pretty rapidly. She has been sleeping under my desk with her head on the cool air vent. She will wander around and just lie in the middle of the floor like she usually does, but she will only travel small distances. I tried to pick her up, which she has always hated, and instead of biting my hand she just put her teeth on it and then let go.

I want to take her to the vet, but I'm afraid they will tell me she is simply nearing death, and from the docile way she has been acting compared to her very irritable and independent personality as a younger cat, I wonder if seeking help will be able to extend life much for a cat this age already.

I keep touching her head and she lays it on my hand and looks at me while I cry. I hate this.

Are you allergic or anything? This is what happens whenever a cat scratches me, even if it doesn't fully break the skin. My cat scratched me the day before yesterday and the next day it was already infected. Keep it clean, try ice maybe? Ice normally helps with the swelling I get. If it doesn't go down completely by tomorrow I'd get it checked out but as long as you clean it a few times a day it should be fine

OK, fact or fiction? Two kittens raised together are more likely to be more "social" than a single cat?

Deciding if I want to get one kitten or two kittens.
>>
>>2137026
I would imagine it's true. If they grow up together they will bond and be more comfortable with each other. I got my cats three years apart and they never connected, just tolerated each other's space.
>>
>>2137045
That's been my experience too. My sister got a kitten about 3 years after we got our family cat because the family cat didn't really like her. Wouldn't let her pet him, pick him up, wouldn't sit near her, etc. The kitten took to him quite well, but he mostly just ignored her until her playing started to get on his nerves. When that happened, he'd only give her a warning, a little nip or a bat, he never tried to seriously hurt her.
There was one ridiculously cute exception though. She didn't bathe much as a kitten, definitely a smelly cat. So he wound up bathing her from time to time when she tried to cuddle up to him.

His left eye is often a little more closed than his right.

It doesn't look like he's got anything stuck in his eye and he seems healthy otherwise.

Here's an older pic, he's been that way ever since I got him, but the vet who did an inspection of his eyes and ears (among other things) didn't notice anything.

Cats are more difficult to "teach" than dogs- not because of the common myth that they're less "intelligent" but because they're not as domesticated than dogs and were never bred to preform specific tasks like hunting and herding as dogs. They're more companions that live along side us. They're more independent and less responsive to specific commands.

That said any animal can be conditioned, it's just not as simple and quick.
Cats learn to meow as kittens, primarily for attention from their mother, siblings or human. if the cat isn't in pain or deprived of food or water he's likely meowing for attention... He wants you to to let him out, pet him or play with him. Just ignoring him is really the best and only real sollution. He will eventually learn that meowing at night= no attention. Once he relaxes give him treat and some cuddles and pets. Scolding cats doesn't work since they're naturally more fearful and cautious than most predators since they're also prey animals in the wild. Yelling or banging will hit teach him to fear you. It takes time, but any new pet will be noisy. He will stop once he realizes he's safe and he's not getting attention that way.

As for the chinchilla, I happen to have one as well with cats. They grew up with him and generally ignore him in the cage. If we let him out the cats will be stalk/try to play but since they were raised around small pets as kittens and know that their food comes from me, they don't really attack or chase the chinchilla. Cats, again, since they're not as domesticated as dogs have stronger hunting instincts but it's usually converted into play rather than actual attacks (like how kittens playfully restle) I would say slowly introduce them and give him a squirt or push him away gently if he attacks, chases, or tries to wrestle the chinchilla.
When he's in the room with Chinchilla and is gentle and relaxed praise him with treats and pets
>>
>>2133392
That was lucky... Outdoor cats are exposed to
>far more parasites (which can affect you too)
>other cats (can kill her)
>dogs (can kill her)
>raccoons (can kill her)
>coyotes (will kill her)
>cars
>piece of shit people
>running away and getting lost
>harsh weather conditions
>diseases like rabies
Please don't. I find it so hypocritical to adopt a kitten just to stick them back in a fatal situation. Domestic pets are literally bred to be depend on humans. House cats are indoor pets. Please dude

Not really. Some cats have more laid back personalities, but they dislike being confined, having no control, being in new places.
And NO DO NOT give him that shit. Give him treats, a nice warm blanket and pillow with familiar scents, pet him, talk in a gentle voice. That's just how cats are, man. And I don't blame them
>>
>>2133774
Cats are less "people pleasey" than dogs.
They consider themselves on the same level as humans (if not higher in their mind). If they're bored/lonely/hungry they're thinking the equivalent of something like "Jesus tell this lazy bitch to wake up, I'm dying over here"
Just ignore her, she will eventually deduce the fact that meowing in the morning=does not equal attention. Though cats, again have very distinct personalities and are less submissive and obedient, so you kinda have to "compromise"
If she's hungry feed her, she may stop. If she tries to jump on the bed, push her off and refuse attemtion. Cats aren't obedient but they do "get the picture" after awhile

You could try spraying a bit of Feliway on the blanket or towel in his carrier. It imitates the pheromones they use to mark territory when they rub their faces against things. For some cats it has a calming effect, for others it does nothing - won't know 'til you try.

Otherwise, poor nigga's just gonna cry. That's what cats do when they're scared. You could gradually condition him to associate the carrier/car rides with positive things, but that's not really an option when you don't have your own car.

Feeding here.
That's what's wrong here or in part at least. Cats are not dog, feline have a small stomach and need to take a lot of little food all day long. Unless your vet tell you to, you should always let a full plate of food. Always. They go easily hungry unless cause to their stomach size.
>>
>>2137286
Go for stainless steel or ceramic over plastic, more hygenic
>>
>>2137233
>Apparently anaesthetics is dangerous

What's wrong with them, besides overdose? A vet gave me some like a decade ago for the long 3+ hour car trips. Seemed to work alright but it would be overkill if you're just going downtown.
>>
Just picked up two kittens! They're long-haired and gray, they've got a tabby M on their forehead but no stripes/patterns.

Is it normal for them to hide? I let them out of their carrier in my bedroom, both are hiding under the bed right now. They don't seem that afraid of me, but still are kind of hiding in the corner.
>>
>>2137512
Absolutely normal. They're in a new and unfamiliar place and don't know what is safe and what isn't. Don't hover too close or try to get them to come out, just let them explore at their own pace.
>>
>>2137553
Alright. My only concern is that they'll poop or pee somewhere or that they might be hungry. But I'll just wait for them to venture out on their own.

For fuck's sake it's cleaned every day and just got a brand new washing before he came, what do you want from me. I'd understand if he had dogs or something and this was a shock, but as a cat person he should know what he's getting into.

How do you deal with the smell? I'm just used to it and don't smell it but I'm open to tricks to mask it better.

It is important to give the babies a safe room to be in if they get overstimulated.
Put the litter box near the area they're staying at.
It helps to keep the carrier near them for the first few days until they get adjusted.
Let them explore at their own pace.
My girls were like that when they came into my life.
Me and my mom gave them the middle room to start out in, but now they have full reign of the house.
Pic is of them back when they were just babies.
Oreo kitten is named Molly, and the tabby is named Lily.
>>
Our two cats are going to be alone for 3 full days because my family decided to go on vacation without planning around my business schedule

They share a single litter box
Two food bowls that were filled immediately before the trip
A water bowl and a water glass, also filled before the trip
One is fat, the other has an average build, neither are particularly heavy eaters

Will they be okay?
I don't expect them to die, but it seems like they'd run out of food and water and fill the litter box all before any of us can get back to them
Will a day of no food/water have a lasting effect on their health or psychology?

Alright so I need advice on how to deal with this piece of shit cat my roommates have.

Now let me start off by saying that they LOVE this cat. He's essentially their child. He's a 6 year old indoor cat, has had medical issues in the past, and has not been neutered. Throughout his entire life they've coddled him to the point of him not trusting anyone/thing else, which makes living here a bit obnoxious for me. His attitude is fine when they're home - he doesn't hate me but he doesn't like me, just doesn't fuck with me.

However when they're gone to work and I'm home with this cat he turns into a weird, aggressive, yowling sack of shit fucks. He'll follow me around and stare at me, making sure to sit in any narrow paths so I have to go through him and give him an excuse to freak the fuck out at me. Lately it's been getting worse and worse and I'm on the brink of punting his ass across the living room. I've tried being friendly, acting slow, giving him treats during the day (when the roommates are in) but nothing seems to work. He's dead set on hating me and being aggressive towards me.

I'm really unsure how to proceed without making the cat really territorial (if he starts pissing everywhere then my living here will be seen as the problem). Requesting assistance.

Any info about it? never owned a cat before
>>
>>2138083
I don't think that deserves a vet. If something seems wrong then take him but an injury that small doesn't seem like you need to take him to the vet
>>
>>2138072
That's typical of intact males. If your roommates actually cared for that cat they'd get him fixed. Not getting a cat fixed leads to a lot of aggressiveness and annoying behavior, and the stress of it usually leads to them living shorter lives as well

All I can say is try to get them to get the cat fixed

Now I can't find them at all. I went to bed with the door closed to keep them relatively contained.

My room is pretty small. I'm fairly confident I searched all of the hiding places.

My only guess at this point is that they crawled out under the door. The gap seems large enough that they could do this at their size if they really wanted to.

Or they just found a *really* clever hiding place because I swear I turned this room upside down.

Hi /an/ I found these four (4) cats under my porch, and they seem to have their eyes infected, from what I can tell, they are couple of weeks old and still on breastfeeding. I've always wanted a pet but my parents wouldn't ever let me. Are you able to leave them alone for a good while or what, I don't think the same can be said for a dog really
>>
>>2138281
eh two things with that, they may do it for free but will take them from you and you will never see them again, and you'll have to always wonder whether or not they gave them away or just had them put down or thrown into a kill shelter or pound, or they may offer a discount and then give them back to you and you can find some safe decent homes for them
just take them and ask,or just call beforehand to see
>>
>>2138281
>>2138361
Just take them and ask what's wrong with their eyes. That shouldn't cost much.
>>
So a friend of mine recently got 2 kittens off the street and is raising them with her sister, I think she should just give them to the shelter but she thinks she's equip to raise em.

Hello /an/. I have an 11 month old cat. He's lived inside his whole life. He's moderately energetic, playful, well bahaved (no pooping outside his litterbox, no major destructions etc). He's a big talker though, but as he's growing he's getting more quiet.

Thing is, I have to move somewhere else for a seasonal job, and I'm taking him with me. There's literally nowhere else for him to go. I will be living with a friend in his parent's house. His parents are fine with the cat coming with me, but for safety reasons (their house isn't cat proof) I will have to keep the cat confined in a bedroom while I'm away.
He can roam the house in the evening, when I'm off work.
How feasible is it to keep a cat mostly in one room for 4 months? How can I make this easier for him?

Well it sounds like it's either that or nothing, and 4 months isn't too long so he should be fine. Is the bedroom fairly big? Cat's sleep 15 hours a day so he'll probably adapt to just sleeping while you're gone and being awake in the evenings. Just make a private space for him to hide if he wants and if there's a window make a space so he can look out / lay in the sun. The talking sounds like it'll be the biggest problem, but mine would do that while I was gone according to my roommate and after a little while would just sleep.

I'm back again for advice, this cat is fucking terrible.
I've tried everything, I'm just not able to afford a diffuser right now. He won't stop attacking me and attacked my boyfriend for the first time last night.
from 4pm to 2am last night he wouldn't stop coming after me, and it's not playful. I don't have to be doing anything. At one point I was just on my phone in bed and he jumped on my head and tried to bite me and i pushed him off and he walked away but kept watching me. He stalks me, but not playfully at all. He just watches my every move. When I got in bed last night he launched himself off the dresser and onto my leg and wouldn't let go, when my boyfriend pushed him he jumped and ran away. As soon as my boyfriend turned his back he did it to him too. I don't know what to do because I'm so nice to him, play with him as long as he wants to play, give him tons of treats and I only pet him when he wants me to. It's just like a switch around the same time everyday and I'm scared to even be alone with him. He's great for most of the day, cuddly, follows me around purring and likes to lay on me while I study but he completely changes around 4-5pm.
I don't want to get rid of him but I can't handle him attacking me multiple times every single night. My boyfriend is already so mad that he said the cat has a week to stop or at least slow down or else we have to get rid of him.

I've got it to where my kittens will come out of hiding to eat.

They're still afraid of me. It seems like eye contact especially freaks them out. They're more comfortable with me being around and not looking at them than they are with me looking at them. They'll play with each other just a few feet out of reach, but still won't let me pet them.

I've tried a few things to get them to not be so afraid. For one, I sit down or even lie on my stomach so that I'm not towering over them. I also try to gently blink at them. I've gotten one of them to eat from my hand. But whenever food isn't involved, they GTFO and hide under the bed or in the closet.

And it's frustrating because they're adorable as fuck. I put some catnip on a rug and they were rolling all over top of each other, wrestling and pouncing and what not. The fact that they look almost identical adds to this. So glad that I got two, so far they've been more entertaining to watch in a few minutes than my last cat was in her entire life, sorry to say.

But I wish they'd be my friends already! Anything I can do or is it just a waiting game?
>>
>>2140229
Try letting them hide if they want. It may take some time for them to get used to their new home, and dragging them into a situation that make them uncomfortable may worsen this. Keep in mind where they might be hiding, though.
>>
>>2140233
One of the issues with this is that they are not properly litter box trained. (The litter box is close to their hideout.) So I am feeding them, knowing that they're going to poop in the closet or a pile of clothes somewhere, possibly pooping somewhere where I won't even find the poop immediately. This is less than ideal, and quite unsanitary. I get that cats make messes sometimes, but right now they're just free-range indoor pooping with zero discipline at 4-6weeks.

I get what you're saying about letting them get comfortable on their own time, but what's stopping them from being conditioned hide until dinner time, then hide again, while pooping in obscure locations?
>>
>>2140239
>I get what you're saying about letting them get comfortable on their own time, but what's stopping them from being conditioned hide until dinner time, then hide again, while pooping in obscure locations?
Kitten are extremely curious as they grow, at that will get the better of them when they're more comfortable. That's when you'll bond. Encouragement like attempting play is not a bad idea.

If you're concerned about sanitation, give them their own, semi-secluded place in the house that includes little places that they can hide in if they want to.

You have to remember that a kitten this young would still be attached at the hip to the mother and, in new place without her, they'll be extremely nervous.

I've bought multiple tools on Amazon that seemed designed for the task but inevitably it would just get caught in the fur and no matter how gently I tried to push on and break it my cat would quickly lose patience and want nothing more to do with this. Pretty much the only thing that consistently works and that my cat doesn't seem to mind much is just to take some small scissors and carefully cut away the matted portions, but is this really the best way?

so I posted the other day saying one of my cats is noticeably smaller than the other, they're about 2 months old.
I weighed them and one is 1.2kg the other is 1.0kg

so I've been playing with him (the smaller one) and he's always trying to bite my fingers and I always thought he was just playing but maybe he's hungry and tries to take a bite then stops because it's not food?

but he doesn't look visibly sick to me.
is there any basis to my little theory or am I thinking too much?

The safest way is with clippers. There are pet-specific ones you can buy for not a huge amount of money.

Alternately, brush/comb your cat more. Longhairs require more regular grooming than "from time to time". Honestly just do a little every day. If you groom regularly and properly, you won't get mats.

Handsome grandpas, anons.

Wash that shit out immediately and thoroughly with hot water, but no need to flip out and to the hospital. I've heard that suggestion before, but it's mostly said in cases where the facility could possibly face liability issues if you acquire an infection. I've been bitten plenty of times and have never had an infection, though, aside from when I was a kid and was too stupid to wash it out.

He's not hungry, he's just being a kitten. Many kittens need to be taught not to bite. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/cats/tips/kitten_play.html

Hypoglycemia, stroke, spinal injury, all sorts of very serious shit. Don't fuck around, get to the vet NOW.

that's reassuring, thank you, interesting stuff in the link, even though its bites don't hurt I'll try to discourage him from biting at all with more toys

Brush your cat every day.
>>
>>2140863
>>2140878
Yeah, I admit I should, though this won't get rid of already existing mats will it?

I think I've been very careful with the scissors though now you've got me scared, maybe I'll make sure to do it over a comb from now on just in case.

I sprayed a bit of water on her head and she got up and was very annoyed with me but seems fine now. I dunno, maybe she was just being lazy? I'll still take her to be checked up tomorrow I guess, it's late now.
>>
>>2140881
Unresponsive 'laziness' is most probably a health concern.
Most at least squirm a little when picked up or pet, even if completely relaxed or asleep.

If they just stop, sit down and are unresponsive for a while, and even seem like they're under the effects of a strong sedative, that's a crash.

I'm moving into an apartment that allows pets.
I work 9-5 every day and rarely go anywhere for weekends.

Was thinking of contacting one of the local animal shelters and asking them if I can be a temporary foster for one of their adult cats (in my home town they're always looking for people to do it), would this be a good idea?

Never had a cat before, had a dog for 17 years but I've interacted (fed, got one cat adopted, took to vet) with a few stray cats.

How do you people feed your cats? My last cat I free fed and he got really fat and I feel really bad about that. I adopted this cat from the shelter and hes already around 15 pounds. How much do you think I should feed him and how should I feed him?
>>
>>2141137
Adding to that, I meant to say I wanted to get his weight down by a few pounds, so hes at least 10-12 pounds. The shelter put him between 2 and 3 years old
>>
>>2141137

Quarter cup, twice a day.
You're feeding the cat, not the bowl.
>>
>>2141143

Fuck. Autocorrect. Thrice a day.

Sounds like a good cause, but you'll probably end up getting attached to the cat and will want to keep it permanently. That's usually how it goes. Thanks for volunteering to foster a cat though, it's a great thing to do.

Is there any essential difference between litters of different prices?
>>
I had to get rid of my because she hated my brothers cat. She started to shit in so many places outside the litter and constantly hit the other cat (without claws). I decided to give her to a couple without other pets. I hope she settles in soon. Even though she hated him, he is sad and super clingy. It's a little heart breaking to see that he looks for her.

fml I can't decide whether to get a kitten so he won't be so lonely. He's always had a playmate/companion throughout his life. Any advice and tips?

I just do about four medium handfuls for my two cats, about once a day. Usually I'll wait for them to start meowing for food since if they're not hungry it seems a waste to encourage them to eat.

Didn't think to ask before but is it only vital I brush the cat's back, or is the fur on the front important to brush too? My cat usually is happy to let me brush her back but if I try to flip her over and brush the other side she does not easily want to stand for it.

I do the underside. It gets messy too and needs some straightening out, whether they like it not.

Feed wet over dry, it has fewer shitty carbtastic fillers. There should be feeding instructions on the packaging, but >>2141143 is the standard. Free-feeding is absolutely the #1 cause of obesity in cats.

>>2141287
Things I know: clumping vs. non-clumping, amount of dust, material (paper, wood, minerals, corn husks, etc.), scented vs. non (go for non - it's much more important for the cat to like the smell of their box than for us to). Things I would assume: degree of odor control, flushable or not, size of granules (impacts trackability/ease of cleaning).

>>2141490
Underside mats too. Longhair cat "armpits" are especially prone to matting. Your cat may do better with combs vs. brushes, or vice-versa. Since a lot of cats don't like getting their bellies brushed (and especially being flipped over forcibly), you can often do it while they're standing with a little practice. Try looking up some cat grooming Youtube vids, maybe.

>>2141452
Is that a ferret or rat in the background cage? You'd just better not name that nigga Oreo.

Ah, I forgot. If you're feeding wet alone, the standard is usually 1/2 5.5oz can twice a day.

My 17 year old gal has taken to cuddling with me on my favorite pillow. It's cute, but I have a sensitive nose and I want her to feel comfy.

What's a good pillow set-up for sleeping next to a cat?
>>
So is dry food really bad for cats? I'm reading this shit that says it basically prevents them from hydrating themselves properly because cats don't drink as much water as they would get from wet food.

Given my last cat died at 8yrs from kidney failure, I'd like to make optimal decisions with my kittens. Right now they're eating Wellness brand kitten formula and weaning milk (they seem to prefer solid food).
>>
So it been 2 weeks exactly since the cat in our house had to be put down and damn creepy that before I woke up this morning I heard his meow in my head like I think he's haunting me. While not "technically" my cat he was still my friend and he did live a good life (12+ years)

I've had two vets recommend going to a fully wet diet. I just wonder how that affects their teeth. I always heard crunching dry food keeps their teeth strong. But I always have two bowls of water out at all times anyway so if he needs a drink it's not a problem. Now my guy is on a 90% wet food diet (only has dry out at night when I'm asleep if he gets hungry). It's working well for him so far.

Hey /an/, I brought a kitten home few days ago and my older cat growls and hisses at her. Is that normal? Will she get used to the little one? I really wanna keep the kitty.

It depends. The best dry food is going to be better than the worst wet food, but if the two are of even vaguely similar quality than canned will almost always be better. I have yet to find studies that definitively link dry food to diseases like chronic renal failure, but the logic is sound: http://catinfo.org/#Common_Feline_Health_Problems_and_Their_Ties_to_Diet_

What the above does not mention is that feeding canned food has been positively correlated with feline hyperthyroidism for reasons undetermined: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15070058
However, of the big 3 diseases in aging cats (diabetes, kidney failure, hyperthyroidism), hyperT is by far the most preferable diagnosis. It rarely results in death (untreated, it can lead to secondary complications such as heart disease), is usually easy to control, and can even be cured if you have the money. When you factor in the additional positive impacts on the urinary system, plus the general improvement in nutritional content, wet is clearly the superior choice.

Wellness is a good brand, especially CORE. Other good choices include Merrick, Tiki Cat, Weruva, and Nature's Logic. There are also raw and dehydrated diets, don't know much about those. They're generally even more expensive than canned foods anyway.

>>2142042
Most current research shows little to no dental benefit in feeding dry over wet unless the kibble has been specifically formulated as a dental diet (most cats swallow the majority of their kibble whole; dental diets have significantly larger, less brittle food pieces that force the cat to chew/scrapes teeth). You can also find studies pointing in the other direction, though. If you're concerned, you could always feed a VOHC-approved diet as treats for oral benefits without sacrificing nutrition: http://www.vohc.org/accepted_products.htm
>>
>>2142631
That's normal, especially if you were retarded and just threw them together like puppies rather than going through a proper slow introduction process. Domestic felines are generally neophobic by nature and will take time to adjust to the addition of new animals, especially if they haven't lived with other pets previously. Some cats never learn to get along, but many will come to at least tolerate each other's presence.

http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/cats/tips/introducing_new_cat.html

She's cute. Looks like she'll grow up to be a mediumhair.
