Was doing research stuff on freshwater amphipods and one of my samples had these little six legged critters floating on the water surface.
They are about 1 to 2 mm long. Found at lake Waihola newzealand. Are they some sort of insect larval stage?
Photo was taken through the lens of a dissecting microscope.

I have also included a picture of an amphipod infected by parasite maritrema poulini, shown as a black circle within the body.
