Nope. Left it in a pot on my windowsill. Died anyways. Post mortem revealed they rotted. Same thing happened to my 5 year old amaryllis the same year.

Probably... the base of that ridgy rim has a fuckload of very sturdy, sharp, downward-facing teeth. yeah, you'll just have to throw them in the fridge during the winter.

the biggest issue with tullips is dormancy, cultivated plants often don't go dormant unless you force them and without dormancy they either don't flower or die.

they need to be kept below 55F if you're storing them indoors.

I got hit with another hail storm last Tuesday, it really did a number on.my hostas. I'm sure I'll get more since spring isn't over yet, and probably trim some damaged leaves early summer.
Other than that everything is taking off, my garden has tripled in size in the last two weeks. My goal is to have everything grow tight for less weeding. Maybe not this year, but I'll get there.

You can buy synthetic piss used for faking a drug test, but I honestly couldn't justify the cost all things considered. There are deer repellent products on the market as well but I don't know how well they work.
As far as the smell is concerned I live somewhere seasonal, by the end of fall yeah you can smell piss at least ten feet away. This is also when deer are most active as they approach rut, so it's not exactly a bad thing. Personally I wouldn't do it right next to your house.

I got some freebie Phal/moth orchids that were looking really sad. One has crown rot and I repotted + sprayed with fungicide and am hoping for the best. The other's blooming so I didn't want to touch it...

So, since the past week this lil guy is been all dry and shit, by common sense I thought it needed more water so I have been watering it almost everyday and changed it to a place where he gets more fresh air and sun. Looks like it's not working.

Here's a photo. The one in the fancy pot I repotted and removed most of the spagnum and put in fir park pieces instead. Has fungus gnats and the top seems gone. Some roots were rotted, tried to cut those out. Sprayed with fungicide.

Other in clear pot has a flower spike but still doesn't look the best.

Considering they were freebies if they live they live, if they don't oh well.

Also, any fungus gnat traps?I'm finding them in places because it's too humid and they love it..

Thanks! I really appreciate the input. I'm still a novice to this hobby, though I've got a collection of succulents, cacti, some orchids and other common houseplants. Finding new ways to expand and arrange the garden is a joy in itself.

I also went and bought a pack of CFL daylight bulbs for my plants. I don't have a highly reflective lamp yet, so I gotta hold off on trying them out just yet. They're Noma brand. Never tried them before, so we'll see if they're any good.

These are the orchids im puttting in my vivarium. Can someone tell me how to correctly plant them?

I have corkwood round stumps im trying to use that are attached to the back that im going to plant the orchids in. Theres already spanghum moss as their substrate and they have very healthy roots. Should i just pack in a little extra spanghum moss i have on hand so they are supported good inside the corkwood stump? Should i leave some of the roots out of the cork wood and exposed to the air? Relative humidity is 65%-80%

Also how should i process my orchids for pesticides and bugs before putting them in my viv, should i just submerge it for a day or maybe a couple hours and rinse it off? Would that be bad for it? I see chlorine or some kind of water stain on their leaves.

Anyways, you should try to leave as many roots as possible hanging off the cork. These guys are ephiphytes after all. A little extra moss to help secure it won't hurt either. To get rid of pests, treat with diluted fungicide and the use distilled water to rinse the crown of the plant. If you ever want to see them flower again, make sure you give them a drop in temperature every night

Bonsai mix is a good, well draining mix that's easily available & better then just the generic cactus soil that's sold everywhere. Making your own is more of a pain in the ass because of the large quantities needed to buy

Is my car dashboard a good place to grow a cactus?
I mean, it's getting closer to summer, and I always park in the sun because I like that toaster feel when you first sit in your car after a hot day. So I could just water every now and again with a bottle of water, but not so much it would kill it. I could just tape the base of the pot to me dash so it won't go anywhere. The only problem I can think of is getting a face full of spines if I get is a wreck, which I can live with

Yes. Grow those shits outside, in full fucking sun. Blast those cunts with sun. The more sun the better. The redder your traps (usually anyways) the better. Make sure you give that plant as much sun as you can possibly give it. Outdoors, no shade, minimum 6-7 hours a day. If you're in USDA zones 8 or lower, just grow the damn thing outdoors, 24/7 all the time, spring, summer, fall, winter. Dionea can readily adapt to lower humidity. I grew my typical outdoors in southern california with no problems, right up until I gave it to my gf...
Keep smaller plants in about 1 inch of standing distilled water. Dionea grow in constantly waterlogged bogs, so they are adapted to have standing water all around their roots.
I recommend growing it in a very bright southern window for a few weeks, spraying it intermittently to let the plant acclimate, then just chucking the thing outdoors and watering every other day

They store the nutrients the suck up through their scales on the leaves there, so plants without roots often die.

If you buy some new Tillandsias, look for at least a bit of roots

Help. A week ago I arrived home from a trip and found out my basil severely underwatered. I'm amazed that it survived.
I try to keep the soil wet but without there being too much yet it has these tip-burnt that looks like overwatering.
Also, what are those white dots all around the leaves? Google tells me it might be sunburn, which is confusing.

Hey guys I have some sunflowers, however I noticed that some are growing much larger than the others. The one on left has huge leafs and is the tallest and the more right you go the smaller they get. I planted them all at the same time and pretty germinated at the same time. Unfortunately they are in a very small place becuase I underestimated how many seeds they were, when I saw how many they were growing I instead just left it so that weak ones would be weeded out but they seem strong.

I'm tryna grow some Persian Shields because their leaves are some of the most gorgeous things in world. I live in an area that gets hot and humid in the summer, and I don't mind caring for it inside during the winter. My only concern is how big they get, 24~36 in. (h) x 12~15" (w). Does any one have experience this or similar plants? Would to be possible to keep it smaller with effective pruning?

I'm not quite sure what pruning would do. I know certain plants can be groomed to not grow a certain way with sufficient pruning. I had to do that with my large neps, but then again, nepenthes are not really the same as strobilanthes.
Those things are really supposed to be outside plants though. Why do you want to grow it indoors? How cold does it get over winter for you?

It gets mild in the winter, but not cold enough to snow. I assumed that would still be too cold since they come from South East Asia, I live in Northern California. If it could survive that than I'm perfectly fine with it staying outside.

The bigger issue is space. I don't really have the room for a plant that big, and I move a lot. If its a lost cause, then so be it, but if it is possible to cut it down a little and still grow it healthy then I'd at least like to try.

My mom grows several Amorphophallus species.

Most Amorphophallus species flower when their corm is heavier than 500g or bigger than 12cm in diameter.
But I don't know much about your species, so it could be completely wrong for you

I planted my dwarf Japanese maple in a 15 gallon smart pot about a week ago. It was advertised as a 3 year graft. Got it off of Amazon.

I got the potting soil from a local garden center, they promised me it was relatively inert and wouldn't burn the roots with ferts. I capped the soil with a fairly thin layer mulch to retain moisture. I've been watering it lightly every day.

So far I can't tell how the tree is doing. It was obviously not in amazing shape after being shipped, but far from sickly. It's lost a few leaves, but I also think I have some new growth, although no new leaves. Not entirely sure.

Today I poked my finger into the soil to check the moistness. I noticed that there were a ton of small ants crawling over the mulch. I'm wondering if they pose a threat to my tree, or if they're just a healthy part of the ecosystem.

Leaf coloration looks off compared to most google pics; I'm hoping this is actually a Germaine's Gyration. Thoughts?

/Plant/, I've got a problem on my hand. I have 2 1/2 tradescantia spatheceas (half because there's a cutting that I'm rooting, which is doing just fine). They'd gotten leggy over the winter months, thanks to the poor lighting conditions within my home. Three weeks ago we had a seasonably warm, very sunny spring day. So I brought 'em all out for an hour to absorb those sweet lumens. They were in direct light for roughly 20 minutes, then an indirect-shaded spot for the last 40 minutes.

They were doing fine after that trip out. Couldn't do it again due to a temp drop, but I figured it wouldn't be a problem. Thing is, since last week, both my largest bush and medium pot have started losing a lot of their leaves. Some of their branches have even seemed to cut off circulation and rotted off. I did some trimming back on the dead leaves and branches, which revealed that the large bush is at least growing new arms, but the medium pot is looking like death.

Tl;dr: what do? Do oyster plants need a few months of cold recuperation to return to full, healthy foliage? What am I fucking up here?

those might be gnats, because if they are, they're harmless. Can you describe the insects?

Also, the off coloration can be attributed to the age of the plant, I think. I'm not a huge tree person, but usually plants with colored foliage will darken up to their correct colors upon exposure to sufficient lighting. For instance, when my nep pitchers open, they're usually green or very pale colored, but within a week, the sun darkens them right up. If your plant is the gree variety, the color on the leaves is not good as it indicates stress.

I would just water it from the top and try to keep the reservoir dry or with very little water. Too much moisture can cause mold problems for tomatoes. Of course your tomato will probably use more water as it grows. Just make sure the reservoir isnt so full that its soaking the soil on the bottom. You want the dirt moist but not water logged.

Also it might look like your tomato might need more sunlight, might explain the pale color. How many hours is it getting? They do best with at least 8 hours of direct sunlight.

They're definitely ants. They're wingless, black or very dark brown, and incredibly small, we're talking less than half of a centimeter.

I tried to identify them based on this http://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/hyg-2064 but there's too many potential matches.

I'm hoping they just help the ecosystem of the soil by aerating it or something.

I was actually expecting the leaves to be not darker, but a much brighter green. I don't know if there can be deviations in actual coloration or not. I've never planted a tree. Pic related was what I was expecting, much less red in those leaves.

Osmocote works well with sarracenia and nepenthes but yes it can kill flytraps.
This year I fertilized my young sarracenia and it's really noticeable I hope they become adults nexy year.

Btw I'm experimenting feeding flytraps with turtle sticks now. I'm noticing that the ones I feed regularly are starting to grow faster and bigger than the ones I leave fending for themselves.

Nah trust me, 'sanguinea Black Jack' IS "Rebecca Soper" - same goes for 'sanguinea Black Beauty' and 'Lantern Alata', they're a bizarre attempt by mass-market tissue-culture nurseries to re-brand an already-named cultivar. I unfortunately don't have any recent photos of mine to show, but this is a young pitcher from a couple of years ago. The green interior wall fades as the pitchers get bigger (and pure sanguinea has speckled pitcher interiors anyway).

Anyone know what kind of plant this is? Dog included for reference of course.

It had extremely small yellowish orangish flowers on it a few weeks ago, and only about a dozen on the entire shrub, and the next day or so after I first saw them the flowers were gone. And I have 5 of them in my backyard and only 2 had the flowers.

your wife probably pruned it before it flowered, you'll cut off the buds if you do that, always prune it after it flowers.

Well they're both pretty inexpensive plants so you shouldn't have been hurt too bad. But this just highlights the fact that you should buy from reputable online nurseries if you really want to get what you're buying

Also, these Flowering Arums just stink for a few days.
When they start to bloom, I usually place them outside. I get them inside as soon as the flower is starting to dry up.
That way, they don't stink inside.

R Soper is still a great plant, better than sanguinea in my view (except the rare giant form). Mine was sold by the guy who literally made the cultivar, so it's evidently quite a common mistake to make. And colour change is just a natural progression, it can also be heavily affected by light intensity (e.g. R Soper leaves will stay all-red like in that photo if they get fucking BLASTED with sun).

To be honest, I'm just now getting into plants, I probably shouldn't have gotten something as finicky as a flytrap. But I love it.

Here are a couple of my trees and pre-bonsai. None of it is particularly special, rare, or developed, but I really like them anyway.
This is my prunus serotina that I messed around with last year and tried to turn into a literati-style bonsai. This season I'm just gonna let it grow out so the trunk can thicken up.

It's pretty hard to fuck up with plants. And even if you do, you can just get a new one and start all over. Much easier than raising pets or even children.

It is a species of bromeliad, the family is Bromeliaceae. Lots of species in cultivation that make great houseplants. For this particular genus Billbergia, the higher the light and humidity- the more colorful they become. Keep distilled water in the central cup.
