Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Just bought this canister filter for £36, how did I do?

For a 54 litre marine tank. Hoping it will double as a decent powerful so I won't have to buy a dedicated one. Is 600L/H a decent flow rate for a tank that size?

Sometimes I like to take a glass of water and put a fish in it. I then take a salt shaker and unscrew the cap. Then I pour salt in the glass of water until the fish gets buried alive(Refill as necessary). You should try it sometime.
>>
Welp, gave my nerite snail back to the pet store 15 minutes ago. Betta would never stop attacking him from day one, and betta has been getting a lot of fin tears, it has to be from all the flaring.

So now I have an overly aggressive betta and a 10 gallon tank that is using basically none of its capacity. Is there ANYTHING i can put in here with him?

can a kuhli loach or two go in? The tank is overfiltered (aquaclear 20)

Then I pull down my pants, put my asshole right above the glass and take a shit into the glass. I think next time I go through the the process of breeding them I'm going to just out them in paint thinner along with Nerite snail babies. Sounds like a waste but I get bored :)

If you can't even put a snail in without your betta freaking out, I wouldn't put in anything that moves. Some bettas just suck at the community thing, it's a risk you take when you get a betta. Mine can only seem to be with snails or corydoras, and even then he'll dart at them from time to time. In the past, I've had bettas that adjusted perfectly well to communities.

Might as well heavily plant that bitch. Aquascape the fuck out of that 10 gal.
>>
>>2094039
it's pretty heavily planted anyway, i can't put more plants in without better lights, there's no point in buying better lights without co2 injection, there's no point in doing co2 injection in a 10 gallon tank.

I now despise this fucking tank and don't particularly like the betta (never had an aggressive one in 6 bettas)

It seems like a lot of work to keep up a planted 10gal just to have a betta in it.

If i got a 20 could I get kuhli loaches?
>>
>>2094044
Bump it to 30 gallons. Not 29 but a 36 inch long 30 gallon or 40 breeder with kuhlis
>>
>>2094039
I've had a giant plakat. 3 inches of fucc n succ. I put him in my 55 till someone came and picked him up. 3 inch fish scaring the fuck out of a 4 inch acara and green terror.
>>
>>2094044
>>2094049

Fair warning, even in a big tank, he might be aggressive toward the kuhlis. I had to move mine out of a 40 gal because he was chasing almost everything that moved (including but not limited to kuhlis) and killed a female guppy. He's in a 20 gal now.

Plenty of plants and decor should break his line of sight, but if you see him chasing the loaches, you might want to move him back into the smaller tank and keep the bigger one as your bitchin' tank.

Kuhlis are awesome once they're used to you, if you've never had them before. I love them.
>>
Would a male betta do well in a 60 gallon community tank?
>>
>>2094071
that depends entirely on what else makes up the community. no fin nippers, nothing territorial and nothing he'd feel compelled to fight.
>>
>>2094071
depends on the betta. some are docile as fuck and get along with literally everything and just pick a little area to hang out in.

some will attack everything that moves. in my experience the former is more likely than the latter. you can even have like 4 males in a 50+ gallon, i've seen it done.

the fry are in the growout tank, my plan is cull, waterchange and pass the fish, never using antibiotics again
>>
>>2094103
antibiotics just make fish die slightly slower or of slightly different causes in my opinion.

methylene blue dips, however, will kill damn near anything (including your fish obviously if not performed correctly)

if your fish have "blood spots" they cannot be saved.

I dislike the blue light, very unnatural in contrast to the white light. Pretty good.
>>
>>2094151
>rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon
Flawed rule, you wouldn't put a 200 inch fish in a 200 gallon would you? Of course not.
First, you need to figure out the expelled bioload, overstocking CAN be done right. Size of the fish does matter, always think about the adult size, "would this fish be happy if I stuffed it in?" raises the answer.
>>
>>2094164
how much filtration do i need? im basically asking if i get a tank can i keep a handful of 10-15 inch fish in it?
>>
>>2094166
You're going to need a 65+ gallon for a handful of 10-15 inch fish, filter has to meet gallon expectancy, you can even double your filtration if you decide to.
For example, in 10 gallons, you'll need 10 gallons or more of filtration.
>>
>>2094169
per hour? per day? guess i wont be getting an aquarium
>>
>>2094172
A simple 10 gallon filter can approximately filter 2 to 10 gallons of water an hour, depending on which brand.
Keeping an aquarium is very simple, beginning with large fish is not.

I need some help.

I got this tank off a friend about a week ago. It is my first tank.

I have a tetra pf 10 filter an aqua coulture bubbler and a heater that keeps my water between 72°F and 74°F. I used start right both times and let the set up run for roughly 5 hours prior befor adding my fish each time since start right apparently works quickly/instantly and i feed the fish tetra brand goldfish food 2x a day.

Bought my first 9 fish from walmart (8 gold fish 1 sucker fish) 1/2 died over night. Went to walmart had them replaced. Put them in tank too. All fish were dead next morning when i woke up.

Cleaned out my tank washed everything out (warm water) and rinsed my gravle fake plants ect. Refilled tank added start right and let it all run the rest of the day

Decided walmart fish are shit after employee tells me they "are not requiered to feed them"

Went to pet supplies plus and got 12 goldfish. Brought them home and sat the bag in the water to adjust temprature so i dont kill the fish by shoking them.

Let them play freely over night. Fine all day and now at 2 am one is fucking dead again.

What the hell am i doing wrong? Can anyone give me tips? Or tell me how to keep them alive
>>
>>2094413
Did you put any water conditioner in the tank? Tap water contains chlorides, chlorine, and ammonia. Also gold fish get big and if I were you I'd just get a few guppies to start out with. After you get comfortable with running that tank and your fish don't keep dying, upgrade to a bigger tank and use live plants.

Just my two cents
>>
>>2094413
>what am I doing wrong?
You're stuffing 12 Goldfish and a possible Pleco into a fucking death chamber.
>why is this bad?
Goldfish grow up to be huge, I'm not talking 4-5 inches, I'm talking about 8-15 inches. They also produce a shitload of waste not even comparable to a Pleco(which also produces a shitload of waste)
Do us a favor and use Google for further research.
>>
>>2094418

>>
>>2094413
How big is that tank? I know you said you used Start Right, but I'd have played it safe and cycled the tank normally for about two weeks before adding fish. I'd also add fish more gradually, say 2-3 at a time.

Goldfish are cold water fish, you probably don't need that heater for them. They actually don't like water over 72 F. They're also very messy and get huge, so I hope that tank is at least a 50 gal. If it's significantly smaller, you might want to return the goldfish and switch to guppies. Guppies are hardy, easy, colorful, friendly, and prefer warmer tanks. They're my favorite starter fish.

Good luck.

Fish with proper colouration indicates that they're healthy and fit. If a fish is pale and washed out, it shows that they're weak, stressed, ill, or dying.

Don't try and take the moral high ground if you don't know what you're talking about. There's a reason most aquarists pick out the lively, active and well coloured fish from LFSs, it's not just "muh purty colors xDDD"

Strangely, my loaches coloured up better when put on white gravel, I haven't moved my shark from my 65 yet, but I guess it'll be interesting to see how his colour changes.

Dry ferts and Flourish once a week, Excel daily.

Substrate is a combination of Eco Complete and Black Sand Flourite, there's some Oscmocote+ tabs I put in deep a month or two ago

3 Honey Gouramis, 11 Kuhli Loaches. I've never seen the Honeys harass the Amanos, only baby and juvenile RCS. They only are aggressive in bursts towards each other and are very chill with sharing meals with Kuhlis, adult RCS, and Amanos at feeding time

>>2094798
How much ammonia is in your tank? Nitrites and Nitrates?
>>
>>2094811
Reading about 2ppm Ammonia, 1ppm Nitrite, and 10ppm Nitrate. No stock as of now but I know there are probably some bladder snails lurking.
>>
>>2094812
Are you cycling? Your nitrites will probably skyrocket into a dark purple in the future if you're using the API test tube kit

Once your nitrites and ammonia are back to 0, your nitrates should be pretty high. Do a water change and throw some more ammonia in there, and if it gets processed to nitrate by the next day your tank should be good to go

Also, don't worry about plants melting contributing to the ammonia spike too much. My entire 29g full of crypts literally melted and everything was covered in a thin layer of shit, but it still cycled and was fine

I also have another 20 galon tank , and I wanted to out something really weird and cool in it but I can't think of what. I'm only experienced with fresh water if that helps.

Another dead Amanobro today. Guys will they forgive me for wishing they were dead? I hope they are happy in shrimp heaven pigging out on an entire half of an algae wafer or whatever

I'm tempted to get more Amanos from Petco and the LFS 1.5 hours away, the latter gave me Amanos that became HUGE in months. I mean like they grew from >1" to 1.75" in two months, is that a bad thing?

Can anyone answer me this? I'm looking to get an algae eater for my Burma/Thailand themed tank, and I've come across panda garras as the best option, unfortunately, I own a rainbow shark. I've heard some say garras are too closely related to rainbow sharks, so they will get attacked, and I've heard others say that they're 100% fine together. But does anyone here have an answer? Does anyone here keep garras with any member of the Epalzeorhynchos genus?
>>
>>2095292
I keep a garra flavatra with 5 red tailed sharks and they leave it alone.

Although I've read multiple places that you need at least 3 or they'll get stressed out. I have no idea if that's true or not as mine is fine by itself.
>>
>>2095292
A couple siamese algae eaters would be another option

Not long. Especially if active fish and especially if they're cichlids or something they'll always fight and you'll have deaths.

Man, that tank aged a lot worse than I realized. I guess it's time for some rearranging.
All of the java fern died. I can't keep the stuff alive for shit. The Cyperus helferi died, too, but I expected that. The salvinia is growing out of control, the crypts are doing well, and the babby skrimps are still doing well, though, so there's that.

Im relatively novice into aquariums so i would like some insight

I had previously 5 Tiger Barbs and a Pleco, two of the tigers barbs died and 3 remain and the pleco so i would like to put more fishes if isnt too much

I know Tiger barbs should be keep in a school of 5 minimun so 2 new Tiger Barbs will be bought, my problem is what fishes can get along with the Tigers barbs besides other barbs and danios since theyre kind of assholes

Yes i know the Pleco will get big as fuck, but when i bought it 2-3 years ago i didnt know about them getting that big so im just waiting for him to kill himself or something or dont destroy the tank

If it's a betta imbellis, then you have a significant chance of him being docile. Imbellis are the wild undomesticated strain, splendens are the domesticated inbred bettas that are genetically engineered to kill everything.

Besides, I personally find imbellis to be much more beautiful than splendens. Plus, as long as you don't have fin nippers, you never have to worry about torn or shredded fins.

RCS are either hit or miss. So I'd suggest getting 4 to 5 berried females (this is so that even if the mother herself dies, the eggs she's carrying might still hatch and survive) and then one or two males (for future generations).

If you are lucky, you will have a strong hardy stock that will survive just about anything. If you are unlucky, they will be horribly inbred stock that are doomed to die no matter what happens.
>>
>>2095094

Go for it. I kept some in a 1.5 gallon dosing Flourish and Excel for several months before upgrading.

So I have a 3 foot * 18 * 18 marine tank with a 20 inch sump tank which IIRC is about 220L of water, and for the past five months all I've had in there was a hammer coral and two clownfish, and some live rock (and some hermit crabs). Recently (a month ago) I bought an angelfish and it did fine for two or three weeks before it went to hide among the rocks ne'er to reappear. We dug it out dead two or so days later. It never really seemed to eat particularly well. I brushed it off as starvation because I was feeding it pellets instead of brine shrimp, and all the other things in the tank were thriving.

Fast forward to two days ago. I went out and bought two foxface rabbitfish, another angelfish, and a jardini coral. This might seem like a lot to add at once but it's a big system with a lot of water. So I put it all in.
Within 24 hours I found the angelfish dead, and it looked like it had been dead for a few hours. Frustrating, but everything else seemed to be doing fine. It was late at night so I went to bed. Woke up the next day and the foxfaces both have whitespot. I did some water testing and the water is a little bit dirty in terms of ammonia, but the ammonia level is rapidly dropping over the course of several more tests and now it's down to zero. Went to the shop, bought some whitespot treatment, came home, went to bed.

Woke up this morning, one of the foxface rabbitfish has now died. Tested the water again, it's still a bit dirty but certainly not bad. And the corals that I have are absolutely flourishing - fully expanded. Even the new one looks better in my tank than it did at the store.

Please advise.

you haven't really mentioned what biofilter you're running and how long it's been cycled.

>inb4 5lbs of live rock
>>
>>2095609
>biofilter
Wet-dry filter full of biocubes in the sump and a few lbs (can't remember how many I bought) in the tank. Most of the filtration should be taking place in the cubes, not the rock. It was cycled for a few weeks before I added any fish, and the tank is 4 or 5 months old by now.

if you're reading any ammonia then your filter is either inadequate or not cycled or both.

those three fish really are a lot to add to that size tank all at once though. It may seem like a lot of water, but that's tiny for a marine tank.

depending on which angel you got, those three alone are probably more than the tank can support. 2 foxfaces is pushing it for that little tank.

This is a almost a daily occurrence for salt water fish keepers. This is why they brag about all the money the spend.

>>

that was most fish caught in the late 80's and early 90's including ones in the US.

it hasn't been a thing since the early 90's though. It may seem strange but fish stores don't want livestock that dies on the way to the store any more than fish keepers want fish that fall over dead as soon as they get home.

Even in places where it's still legal essentially nobody does it because it kills way too many of the fish. It also presumably kills a fair number of the people that mix it and use it.

Different species of fish are going to have different care requirements. I don't know if PetCo is as bad as PetSmart, haphazardly tossing fish into poorly defined "tropical," "kinda mean," and "dicks" groupings and promoting universal "stocking rules" like the inch per gallon rule, but there's a lot more nuance than that. Start looking up care guides on different fish in the store whenever you're bored. Having a good knowledge of each type of fish is going to impress any costumers with impressing, and the ones not worth impressing are going to buy crap no matter what you do.
>>
>>2095716
depends on the people who work there entirely

i had a local petco that i swore never to go into after i saw scores of dead fish one day, just not even being taken care of, employees lazing about.

i had to go in for some reason another day i think i was getting a laser engraved tag for my dog because he lost his. and they had obviously gotten new management or something because the fish tanks were sterling and in fact had been caringly set up, somebody went through and planted like literally 25 tanks, which is completely unheard of in these types of stores.

so lesson learned, even chain shit stores can have caring employees

I just witnessed some weird behavior between my rainbow shark and my bristlenose. So the rainbow shark was chilling, and the pleco started chasing it. Really aggressively darting at it, over and over. Then it settled down, and the rainbow shark started following it around. Not attacking or anything, just sort of hanging around the pleco. It did this for a few minutes, and they just now separated.

The fuck was that about? Never seen a pleco chase something before.
>>
>>2095854
Bristlenose are territorial especially as they grow larger. Only sometimes though. Also I was at pet supplies plus the other day and they had small common plecos with some decent size goldfish. The fucking commons were floating around then landing on there back succing on them. There was an indent on one goldfish.

>>
>>2094413

for the fish to die this quickly there must be something in the water killing them off

you must add water dechlorinator to the water before putting fish in! everything must also be rinsed in dechlorinated water as well not just tap water!!!

letting the bag sit to adjust to temperature is good but fish must also adjust to the water itself you need to slowly combine your aquarium water into the bag as well
>>
>>2095094

those are planarian worms

from my experience they end up appearing my aquariums if im not cleaning them as well i as i should be. they show up in my with gravel if i repeatedly miss spots vacuuming after a month or so, eventually they can move into the water column

being more thorough with cleaning removes them... they are not BAD in the aquarium but for me they are a sign things are getting a little too dirty/funky

a light gravel vacuum will remove the excess debris and loosen/reinvigorate the soil as well as remove some of the planarians

they attach themselves onto things well if you suck them up some will remain latched onto the gravel vac

just got an axolatol 3 days ago, I've heard that they like bare bottom tanks/fine gravel/and corse gravel. So I was thinking if I should pour some sand on top a section of the gravel? So like a bed kinda? I just don't want him to accidentally eat a rock and die because of that. For now he eats pellets but I'm thinking about feeding him worms. Thoughts? Tips?

Hey /Aq/,

I have a brown algae problem that i can shake off no matter what i do, less light doesn't work, less feeding nothing, more regular water changes and as well as the addition of siamese algae eaters, nothing still there as well i have green algae growing too.

Its a 50 gallon tank with a few anubias's, amazon swords a few other misc plants, Has been about 4 months after tank has been cycled, low nitrates etc. 80 or so tetras.

Please give me some advice!
>>
>>2096410
Take the fish out, bleach the tank, rinse it like fuck, put the fish back in.

The only times I've been able to successfully beat a stubborn algae problem is with a "fresh start".

If you have more time and somewhere you can hold the fish for a while then you can empty the tank and let the algae dry out and die. No risk of accidentally poisoning the fish.
>>
>>2096410
Are you dosing any ferts for your plants? Post a pic of your tank.

Unbunch those stems and give them more space to grow. What kind of lighting are you using? It might be too intense for your tank.
>>
>>2096423
just using a holder that is made for fluro's in it but replaced the 2 fluro's and starters with 2 17w 6000k led tubes.
>>
>>2096426
Your lighting seems to fine. I'd just add more fast growing plant mass if that was possible and let your tank fill out some more. Eventually the plants will out compete the algae. Otherwise, amanos and otos should take care of any soft algaes like diatoms and green algae. Though to be honest, I only see a little bit of algae of the anubias which is normal when they're hit with plenty of light.

SAEs are more geared towards filamentous/hair algae. Algavorous plecos such as bristlenose or nerite snails would be better for brown algae.

Almost all saltwater fish are wild caught and no one wants to take the time to breed them because "lol I will chase them out of there reefs and toss a giant mark up" granted some freshwater fish are also wild caught but at least a huge percentage are being bred in aquariums and still people are trying to get some that won't breed at home to breed.

Your only serving to stress the cinamons and lower their immune systems, allowing disease to run rampant. If you want to quarantine, at least have the system be thoroughly cycled and with a decent amount of liverock in it.
>>
>>2096608
> huge percentage
Keep telling yourself that. Maybe, MAYBE half of freshwater fish are captive raised. Much more of them are wild caught.
Saltwater can be bad, sure, but my rock is artificial live rock, my corals are all aquaculture, and my clownish is captive breed. My three green chromis are wild caught, but thats pretty much all. Oh, and my shrimp was wild. That's not to damaging
>>
>>2096608
Because it's much easier to fuck a reef up to get fish than to breed them. But anyway saltwater aquarists are elitist and will shit on you but get butthurt (see>>2096606) if you mention anything bad about saltwater. It's mainly because they spend a lot of money on making a tank that looks just like every tank ever and keep the same exact fish as everyone else. They don't like different and they don't like change. That being said I spent thousands on my 300 gallon saltwater set up and in the middle of either selling it as is for a nice price to buy a bigger tank to start a freshwater tank or convert this to freshwater. Can not make my mind up as there is so many cool and diverse freshwater fish. But I want rare and hard to come by fish.
>>
>>2096614
Deny it all you want but lots of freshwater fish are being bred and lots of people and Asians are working on more as to not fuck with the environment.
>>
Autism attacks incoming
>>
>>2096616
Not saying it doesn't happen, and it's a great thing that it's becoming more common, but the people who say saltwater harms natural ecosystems more then freshwater are misinformed. Many saltwater fish are captively breed now, from clownfish, to cardinalfish, and even lots of gobies are now captively breed. And almost all coral thats worth any kind of money is raised in aquaculture facilities or corals farmers tanks. Harvesting of freshwater fish isn't as harmless as you'd think. They devastate whole populations and ruin the bottom of the river sieving with their nets, and there is a much larger number of freshwater fish that never make it to the fish store then saltwater fish. Still, the local economies depend on our aquarium trade, and if we all stopped and captively breed our own, those fishers will likely switch to farming, and stop caring about the river that they took from for years, and the river will become polluted with agriculural runoff and kill everything, like what happened to the red tailed shark. It's extinct in the wild now, and only lives in our tanks due to breeding efforts.
>>
>>2096615
People who move from saltwater to freshwater are just butthurt they spent so much money and everything died because they are stupid and fucked up, and lost thousands in livestock. e.g. You
>>
>>2096620
Some facts I've seen though are most imported saltwater fish die from cyanide then the weak die in transport. But harvesting freshwater fish doesn't harm the environment unless overfishing. Most freshwater rivers and lakes are barren. But here's what I don't get. We can keep some endangered animals or extinct fish in aquariums but we can't keep Asian arowana which fish farms are breeding like all fuck these years and still can't get them.
>>

ahahaha right? And when I do find them, they cost more then all of my saltwater fish combined. I really want to get a nice one... Have a spare 55g sitting, ready for a little juvenile if I find one cheap.
Most fish are no longer caught with cyanide though, the importers that use fish caught primarily with cyanide have been found and, and people tend to avoid them. Think about it, would a LFS keep buying from the same person if the fish always died in a month or two from cyanide poisoning? Freshwater populations are almost always entirely fished out of their area.

I can get silver arowana for 30-45 bucks which isn't to bad. Then the rarer ones go for 80-250 but Asian arowana is what I want and are doing great at Indian fish farms but they refuse to help replenish the wild populations. But then if they did those fucking Asians would fish them right up. But then at the same time they can do amazing things.

I don't know why you belive that saltwater aquarist are elitist. Sure when it comes to water chemistry and live stock expense, but a basic marine tank isn't really any different then a FW tank.

In fact I would say keeping a fully planted tank with true plants is far harderby order magnitude then growing corals especially if you're balancing the needs of fish over plants.

Also it's pretty shitty to assume people who run marine tanks are trying to impress anyone. I do it becuase I think it's awsome to grow corals and buy/sell trade them. I even make somewhat of living servicing big marine tanks.
>>
>>2096744
Glad there are others on here doing saltwater.

I didn't realise there was even contention here. I'm starting up my first tank as saltwater, because I was more interested in understanding marine ecology and because at my initial research it seemed like you could get more types of inverts in a marine tank, like crabs, starfish and stuff. Freshwater just seemed to be fish and shrimp. That may be not true, but I'm already on the saltwater path and it is fun so far.

My nitrites are finally dropping in my cycle after 2 weeks of no chance. almost 24 hours since they were reading off the chart and now they've plummeted to 0.5ppm. Ammonia went from 4ppm to zero overnight two days ago. So close now to finishing the cycle, I'm sick of the cloudy brown water.
>>
>>2096744
Both require puntual WC and daily dosing, i dont see the difference anyways
>>
One of my glowlight tetras is quite pale and he's breathing faster than the rest. The others' mouth closes between each breath, his doesn't, almost like he's got something stuck in there. (I don't think he does though.) The others are vibrant and normal. As I write this, he's up at the top of the tank.

What can I do?

:(
>>
>>2096759
Forgot to add that I did a water change yesterday.
>>
>>2096760
Pretty high mortality rate to be honest. Expect the worse but do you have enough surface movement?
>>
>>2096759

Sounds natural. Most humane thing to do would be to put it out of misery. You can pour ice cold water over it to kill it instantly.
>>
>>2096764
What is it? I have a Whisper filter, so it's somewhat gentle, but I can turn it up. It doesn't create bubbles in the water, but I could take some water out which will make a small waterfall.

He's joined the rest of them and has more color but still quite pale.
>>
>>2096756
I would consider adding some turbos and margarita snails pretty soon. Suck as much of that cyano/diatom shit as well as any detritus. You don't want any of it decaying in your tank and causing persistant nitrate problems (frequently clean filter socks and bio balls if you have them for the same reasons).

Also add a little bit of Kalkwasser even if your not keeping corals just help buff the water a bit.
>>
>>2096769
Also I have a crushed clay substrate. Heard mix things. Should I switch to sand?

I'm not usually keen on snails and so wanted to avoid them if I could and find a different cleanup crew. Anything else that can do the job? However, I did see them at the LFS and they looked pretty nice, can't see much of the slimey parts and just a beautiful shell. Are they likely to breed tons of tiny offspring, though? I don't want to decide I don't like them but have an impossible job of removing them.

My tank's actually remained cyano free since the last massive water change before I put LR in. I got a bit of diatom blooming when I put the LR and sand in but I think the silica reserve is depleted now because they seem to be withering on the live rock. I've got other clumpy brown goo sitting on the sand bed though that I'm going to manual remove when I do the post-cycle water change. This cobweb-like stuff (pic related) started growing on the sand/LR after I did my first fishfood dump to spike the ammonia levels, which is what I believe has turned into the clumpy brown stuff when I disturbed the water a bit last week. Do you know what it is?

I've got a canister filter now if that can be put to good use soon, btw.
>>
>>2096756
>I didn't realise there was even contention here.
it's just banter.
>>
>>2096778
Up ton you honesty some people swear by bare bottom tank or Deep sandbeds. You might have a higher silicates and iron issue with the clay bottom but it's really up to looks. I personally keep a normal sand bed and a small refugium with a DSB for pods and bethnic life. As for snails, you could go for hermit crabs but honestly crabs kinda suck in comparison to snails when it comes to the job of cleaning algae. At worst they can become predatory to other snails and inverts.

Cobweb stuff can either be fungi from decaying organic matter on the rocks or the mucous strans of certain worms that lI've on the rocks. Most likey some kinda fungus.

Canister filters are good but you should if you can plum a sump and use the canister as a carbon/bio ball whatever reactor in the sump. I notice that marine tanks with canisters tend to have low pH issues.
>>
>>2096779
looks like fungus.

could be bacteria or cyanobacteria though.
>>
>>2096789
On the substrate topic, I got a job to setup a 10k gallon natural species tank from the Chesapeake. What would be a good bottom material that wouldn't fuck up the water column but also match the bottom? Muddy bottoms that can cloud the tank would be a problem.
>>
>>2096792
try cobbles or smooth gravel.

If that's going to be a problem for detritus I'd probably do a fake mud bottom using foam and paint or some such thing. Maybe colored concrete sculpted to look like channel mud.

basic tips? quit while you can before you're stuck being the only one in the store who gives a shit. coming from a current full time aquatics specialist at a petco. otherwise, I found a lot of my job involves telling people what fish they can't put with their goldfish and/or betta, aka, most of them. get ready for a lot of "look, nemo! and dory!" from children. oh, and learn to despise carnival season, tons of people with goldfish that think they can live forever in a bowl (protip: they can't). also, fuck corporate retailers, especially in terms of animal care. petco is vastly better than petsmart from what i've understood, but it's still a giant load of shit. if you find yourself truly interested in fishkeeping, find an independent shop where people share your passion.
