Well it's not like cheetahs are very threatening to humans nor is it very hard to snap a spine.

Cheetahs = the most chill of the big cats. I would totally have a pet cheetah. They used to be domesticated and kept as pets anyway (Egypt) and some people still keep them as pets.

I'd love to have a pet Cheetah, but it seems wrong to keep them in any kind of small area, considering they're naturally animals that run in large open spaces.

They only run like that a couple times a week at most. Usually they're just lounging about. You could definitely create a cheetah friendly environment. Just have a delicious cheetah meal (dead rabbit or chicken or something) launch across an enclosed run and your cheetah gets it's weekly sprint + meal. Happy cheetah can then spend the rest of the week doing nothing and being lazy.
Fuck. Just build a chicken launcher and feed your cheetah that way every day.

So what's the deal with cheetahs anyway? How are they less aggressive than felines half their size? Is it temperament or the lack of means to easily kill humans due to their small jaws and frail build?

Cheetahs (and cougars IIRC) seem to share the predisposition for being tameable that probably resulted in the domestication of wildcats. When tame, cheetahs act pretty similarly to domestic cats. Every cat owner has their blood shed at some point. Even if tame cheetahs actually were just scaled-up pussycats, they're just too dangerous to catch on as a pet.
That being said, they may well be like cats in that they take well to the domestic life (as in they can live a happy life in the company of people willing to deal with them). Won't make them catch on as common pets, but they're probably a great fit for safari parks, small zoos, and other responsible caretakers. They're iconic, beautiful, and obviously can get along with people; the species will survive in captivity no matter what happens to their wild population.
