Just abandoning it at a shelter might feel bad for some people. If you put it to sleep, you don't have to worry about the well being of the dog, as you'll always be sure it's in a better place. You should respect their decision.

mine has a lot of energy, but his eyesight isn't as good as it used to be, he can still see but i can tell there's some issues...other than that he's good though, he hates the cold but when it's nice out he can still go for mile+ walks and likes exploring and whatnot...

all the dogs i've been around that haven't lived long lives were usually ones that weren't very active and didn't get out enough, they just get fat and go to shit...

Not as old as your dogs but mine is close to eight years old. Picked him up as a straight and really glad about that because there was no way he would survive in the wild. I've had him longer than any other dog in my past or childhood and he's been with me since I used to be a daily depressed/suicidal mess. One of the few constants in my life from that time.

I know it is far off but I dread the day he dies or if anything severe happens to him. I'd fucking destroy anybody who would hurt my dog.
