I just got a Dorcus curvidens, and I need help naming him. (I know name threads suck but hey its nit a dog/cat right)

Personality wise, he just trundles along, is very non-aggressive and calm. He likes to hide inside your bra, you can kiss his face and he won't care. He lifts his head up like a dog.

something like Chunk, Fudge, Pup.... names like that, or any other that come to mind?

I'm not sure, I think it depends on the species? I heard rainbow stags can live up to 18 months, but some Dorcus species only six months... Guess I'll find out.

Stag beetles have these weird little orange fuzzy tongues that come out and drink nectar. Their mandibles are only used to fight off other males, so they can't really hurt you, which is cool.

The male stag beetle's antlers are only used for intraspecific combat (grappling with other males and that sort of thing).
Because they only need to be strong enough to get a grip on a competitor's wingcases they're not really that well muscled.
If one got ahold of you it'd feel like getting a spirited nibble from a plastic fork.
Now the females on the other hand...those can definitely draw blood. Take it from one who knows.

Sorry for being gone, I had a bday party this weekend!

>>2048604
>>2048780

I got him from Titan Beetle Shop, care is pretty easy once I figured out how to do it. You just need a cage with hydrated dirt (ie: mix it up with purified water till its damp), that doesn't have much ventilation so it stays humid (i put seran wrap over most holes in a kritter keeper). Maybe a little log to climb. They eat jellies that they sell on the site, and you change that every day. And that's it! Super duper easy care. I take mine out a lot so they have room to climb and explore

>>2048788

Nah, I might be teaching overseas in the fall, so I decided to hold back on anything that would take so long.

For now, I just wanted to buy one adult -- but there was a cheap rainbow stag, then my p. fabricei takakuwai's leg was broken, so they sent me a free Dorcus stag. Now I have three, lol.

I know they don't live too long, but they're a fun pet to have for a little while. I say go for it if you like them, they're charming little guys.

Since I mentioned him, here's Taku, my p. fabricei takakuwai. He came in the mail with a broken front leg (his container broke), so he's got some problems getting around. He eats a lot, tho, and is doing pretty well

Are Rhino beetles good pets? I like all these beetles but Rhinos are more aesthetically pleasing to me.

Felt it on my skin and my friend's dog's ear suffered the same fate, too, and I can confirm this. Those bitches have mandibles that are built to cut through wood, it will shred your skin like it's paper. Got bitten by a female Lucanus cervus and it felt like someone burrowing a knife in my finger. My friend's dog had the misfortune of one falling on him and biting his ear, refusing to let go while the poor bastard was yelping and flailing around.
>>
>>2051279

Beetles' short lifespan in wilderness can be attributed to several factors, most important being mating-the only purpose of their adult/imago form, once they mate, they live for a little while longer and die- and stress from evading hunters and traversing long distances. Some species of beetles can live up to a few years (2-3 years) if they do not mate and if you take good care of them, but most can live up for 6 months or so max.
>>
I've always wanted to have a pet beetle, but I heard they only live in beetle form for a few weeks. Is this true?

What is their lifespan as a beetle?

Praying Mantids live for a full year, and I've had many live longer than that.
>>
>>2052824

See here >>2052823

Some species of beetles can live for a few years. Dorcus titanus for example can live for 1.5 or 2 years, while one species of American rhinoceros beetle can live for up to 3 years, can't remember it's name.
>>
>>2052862
But how long do they live in their final beetle form? Does the
1.5 to 2 years" include their larva/worm stage(whatever it is called- im not too knowledgeable on beetles)?
>>
>>2052868

That lifespan is just their beetle form.
>>
>>2052916
Oh, cool. I'l have to get some beetles at some point then. The bigger the better.
>>
>>2052972
I got mine at Titan Beetle shop, I recommend them if you live in the US (since there's not many other options). You can get some seriously huge beetles, but every millimeter costs you. I'd love to just hold one of those enormous rhino beetles, though...

>>2052814
That's terrifying, lol. I could have gotten some cheap females with the males I bought, but I'm glad I didn't, because I would have stuck my hand in the cage just assuming neither sex would bite me. Do they burrow through wood to lay eggs? I know rotting wood is what the larva eat.
>>
>>2053211
how much was shipping
>>
>>2053264
$32. The Dorcus was $45, but I got him free because the earlier shipment of >>2051474
this beetle was damaged (that beetle was $50 originally). My small rainbow stag male was $30

It's about 20 cents for each jelly, and I get 2-3 days out of each one if I slice off the old stuff on top

So yeah, pricey bugs! But they're really fun
>>
>>2053211
>Do they burrow through wood to lay eggs? I know rotting wood is what the larva eat.

They do, so they can lay the eggs within the wood. Once the eggs hatch, larvae proceed to eat the wood from the inside, and once they are done feeding, they crawl outside and burrow into the ground to pupate.
