Yesterday, I was trying to measure my monitor's overall length using a soft measuring tape used by seamstresses. Being that I did the same thing a week ago, I did not think it would bother her. I was entirely wrong, first she attacked the tape measure then slowly (like casually) reached back and grabbed my finger tip. My female cats do this when they want down, so luckily she chomped on me a few seconds then went for the measuring tape again. It felt the same as an exact-o-knife piercing my finger. Later I measured her on the table, she is 22" from nose to tail tip.

I have a 50 gallon tank arriving tomorrow. Whats a good snake to put in it? My original plan was a kingsnake but it seems like a waste of a huge tank to put something so small in it.
I've never owned a snake before, so docile and hardy is a plus. I do own a healthy gecko though.

you may want to stick with your original plan of a king snake or pretty much any other colubrid you might want
otherwise you'd have to look at the smaller varieties of python or boa. If you gave it enough stuff to climb on, you could probably do a jungle carpet python. You could probably also do a woma python. If you can keep up with the humidity requirement a rainbow boa could also work.
unfortunately I think you're a little too small for something like a dwarf red-tail or a short-tail python.

So the space heater I use to heat my snake room keeps just randomly turning off, and I have no idea why. Nothing else in the room turns off, just the space heater.

I tried moving it to a different outlet, because it kept shorting out the power strip and I wanted to save my thermostats. It worked for a few months before it started shutting off again.

It hasn't been that bad when it shuts off until now, because it's been fairly warm all winter. But tonight I woke up the fucking thing had shut off again, and it was in the low 50's (F), and my warmest enclosure was in the low 60's. Who knows how long they've been that way, but it's going to take 4-6 hours to get the room warm again, if the heater doesn't turn off again.

I've tried changing outlets, changing the setting on the heater, nothing works. My next step is trying to switch out heaters, and see if a different one works. The only thing is, you can't tell when the other heater is off or on, so I can only tell if it's shut off by if I walk into the room and it's frigid cold.

The heater we have heating the house is a monitor heater, so it doesn't heat strong enough for me to open the door and let that heat the room, unless everybody else in the house wants to constantly live at 80-85F.

Anybody have any clue why this keeps happening? It's never done this before, and if this thing keeps doing this all my snakes are either going to fall ill or die.

My jungle jag as expected has the wobbles, Its kinda cute and i was ready for it having the condition, its very mild and doesnt display unless she is startled like when i go to pick her up but she stops right afterwards and acts normal
Is the wobble in anyway detrimental to the snake or will it live a full happy(in snake standards) life?

I bought substrate/bedding from a "suspicious" source and I'm affraid of mites or something inside. I've read that putting it inside the microwave for about two minutes would kill everything, is that true?

I took in this 13 year old bearded dragon female from a friend who moved out of town. She's still fertile, and about to lay eggs (not fertilised) soon, and I'm very worried about her. She's so fat and I've never gone through anything like this before. She's my first pet...

The biggest ones I see commonly for sale are the Mexican Black kingsnake and the speckled kingsnake
Sometimes you see Florida kingsnakes and those get pretty big too

So I bought morio worms(super Worms) for my white's tree frog, is it safe? I read on forums people saying they've heard of them burrowing out of stomachs, but its probably bullshit they all said. For safe measure I removed its head first before feeding to the frog last night.

My retic perks up when she sees movement, accompanied by hyperventilation and pupil dilation. Once she sees I'm not actually a rat, she goes back to laying down but will still get little sparks of hope and lift her head to look. She's very desperate for food, you see. She's as bad as my cat when it come to begging for food, but at least she's quiet so I can ignore her.

My eastern garter is also always desperate for food, and will come rushing out when he feels me walking into the room, and will follow my finger around, trying to snap at it through the glass.

usually you use the reptivite (or equivalent calcium + multi vitamin) for dusting feeders and put an additional little dish of pure calcium in the tank. Just dusting the insects is usually sufficient as long as you are dusting them for every feeding.

Oh wait, you mean feeding the supplement to the bugs? You can sprinkle a small amount on the veg you are using to gutload but, as anon above mentioned, this can cause them to die prematurely.

However, one thing that does work well for cricket and roach gutload is crested gecko diet. Just the powder, don't mix with water. I stumbled on to this when I found my geckos didn't like a particular flavor of it.

I found this little guy as I was driving away from the beach in Portugal (centre) a couple years back. He was laying in the middle of the road, so I had to get out and poke him gently with a stick until he moved or I would have had to drive over him. He was lying very still, I was worried he was sick or dying until I touched him and he raced down the road into some bushes.

I still think of him sometimes. What kind of lizerd was it? If you can ID it, is it native to Portugal? He was pretty.

I just got a second leo (female as well), and while I'm happy that she is super active, I have the feeling that she annoys the other one a lot.
I have a fairly big warm hide (big enough for 2 leos), as well as a smaller moist hide, and my older leo (1 year difference) won't stay in the same hide as the new one...
Is this normal for the first day, or should I offer another warm dry hide as well as another moist hide...?
I thought 2 females would be cool with each other, I don't want my initial leo to be annoyed/dominated...

Go out innawoods and grab a branch. You want hardwood though, no pine no cedar. Nothing that leaks sap.

Sounds okay so far. It can help to provide two separate food dishes so one gecko cannot stake territory on the food source.

Remember these are not naturally group dwelling animals so there is a possibility they won't adapt to the arrangement. However, if they're fighting you will definitely notice. Keep an eye out for wounds. I consider an accidental tail bite that did not result in a full on fight or a dropped tail to be a good sign, actually.

I saw the younger one mistaking the tail for food, I'm 80% sure it was not intended. I saw her doing this gecko "I saw food" head inclining thingie, my old one was behind a rock, and when she moved, the new one thought the "insect" would escape and bit... then my old one kinda jumped/wiggled, and the new one let her go.
I guess I'll give them a week before making a decision. It was just weird that my old one did not eat today ( fed her 3 days ago).
Also, I'm a bit scared now when removing all food from the cage when I need to go away for a few days... I don't want them to kill each other.

Honestly from my experience, they prefer the plastic. Since the plastic is hard and not easily broken like real plants I've caught them rubbing up against the fake plants to help get their shed off. But it depends on what type of plant we are talking about too.
Ive heard great success from short grasses in the tank with a Ball Python.
To do this, do a layer of your choice soil, reptile safe of course, and then a layer of Forest Floor bedding. The grass will grow through the forest floor and look pretty cool.

My leopard gecko's tail tip is worrying me. Between his last shed and today (he shed again last night) his tail tip has gotten really dark and looks infected. Possibly necrosis I from a bad shed? I was waiting for him to shed again to see if it was an injury that would go away but it's done the opposite and spread some.

In that case you could actually divide that in to two separate spaces. Take a piece of coroplast and cut to size, put in middle, secure the top corners with tape and place some rocks on each side at the bottom to hold it. The only thing you would have to do is move your under tank heater to the center right below the divider so your temp gradient goes from warmest at the middle to coolest on each far side. Or if you're using heat lamps just position them right over the middle.

Hey everyone, I kind of have a sad story to tell, but it has a happy ending. I recently took in a young lesser B.P. as a rescue. His first owner was a newbie to reptiles, and unfortunately turned out to be somewhat irresponsible in pet care and in other areas of life.

This poor little guy ended up at the losing end of a knife from his previous owner's ex-boyfriend. This knife attack apparently happened maybe 5+ weeks ago.

I have had him a little over a week. I opted to not take him immediately to the vet, because I wanted to see what he would do over the first few days. It had already been so long it wouldn't matter much.

I didn't take a picture from day 1, but this is day 2. Note there is a finer/thinner healing cut along the back of his neck, this seemed to be mostly healed when I got him.

There is also what she described as a "brown spot" developing on his side. I thought this could be scale disease by how she described it, but honestly, to me it looks like someone took a lighter to it. He balled up really tight when I did the first wound disinfection on the burn. :(

I have had him for about a week so far, and overall he is healing rapidly after home wound treatment and better environmental care. I don't think his original onwer was keeping him at ideal temperatures, she said his tank was kept near a fireplace, which is a huge cluster of extreme hot and cold drafts in wintertime. Also, some of the driftwood she gave me with his undersized tank was covered in green mold. I have no idea WTF she was doing.

This picture is a few more days in. Each day he seems more active and normal B.P. like. His sensitivity on the burn is also going down by this point.

One visual inspection in morning.
One visual inspection in evening.
Daily wound cleaning with dilluted providone iodine.
Daily wound packing with neosporin.
Fresh water daily.

He's much more active, goes around his enclosure, and seems like a normal snake aside from the huge gash scab on his side.

This morning he looked normal, but I did notice he went through a blue eye phase recently, so he was due to shed. The results afterward are really remarkable. When I found him tonight curled up in his hide with a huge ball of shed in the middle of his body coil.

To my surprise, pretty much all of the damaged scales have come free with his scab. The wound underneath was very clean. It was completely scale free, and only had a few bright pinkish/red streaks, and the deepest part of the wound had a reddish spot. I cleaned it and packed it with ointment before I remembered to get a picture, but here it is.

He still has stuck shed on his tail and round the lighter burn, but his recovery the last several days is remarkable. I'm hoping to feed him in 2-3 weeks.

I'll try until the end of the week. Thing is, the shy one even "knows" the tank and the hides (did not move any hides), she went ahead and looked for the new gecko when I put her in the tank, but she kinda darts away from her now.
On the other side, foodwise, I had 3 crickts in the tank (along with some food for them), and I handfed the new gecko(guess she was starving, or she does not give a crap about humans). New one ate 6 crickets, I don't think she ate the other 3 as well... Maybe the shy one ate over night...

I'm considering getting a third snake, this time a ball python.
I was wondering if breeding my own feeder mice would be a good idea as I currently have the space.
Do any of you breed feeder mice and is 3 snakes too little to keep up with the volume?

New ball python owner reporting back. He's using his hides regularly without me having to put him in them, and he even ate (two days after he came home). I read up and I think he wasn't in them because he was hungry, poking around at the top of the terrarium.

Along with the infrared lamp, I got him some moss to keep the humidity up and another plant. He really likes to climb up on the vines.

One question though, I haven't seen any poop/urates yet, how frequently should he be going? He's almost 4 months old and his last meal was a mouse hopper (yesterday).

I used to breed rats for my boa constrictor and ball python, 2 females and one male. That was the perfect amount for two snakes, and I was even able to stock up on extra food, completely rotating everything out every 2-3 months.

I paid $15-30 on rat pellets depending on when it was on sale that would last me 1-1.5 years for the three breeders and all the litters, and changed bedding 3-4 times a year for like $20 a bag, and they used half of it at each change. They had a big 5'-6' wooden cage that I kept in the car port with a wire front and I kept their bedding 5"-6" deep. Fresh veggies were provided from our food so the cost was digested into our weekly/monthly food bill. So, roughly, the cost for my particular trio was about $45-70/year just on pellets and bedding, with it maybe getting up to $100/year.

As far as the snakes keeping up with the volume, keep the number of breeders low and you should be fine. You can keep un-vacuum packed rodents for 4-6 months, and 8-12 months vacuum-packed.

I'd guess maybe twice a week for urates to once every other week for feces. Snakes don't always poop after every meal, so if they don't poop every time they eat it's not worrisome.

Generally, it should take 24-48 hours for any bulges to disappear, and then about 7-9 days for them to poop when digesting properly. But, some snakes will hold onto 2-4 meals at a time before pooping, and it's just something they do. As long as it isn't constipated (you'd be able to feel hard lumps in its belly), the snake will poop when it's ready.

Hey, on my hot side, underneath the tank I have it the UTH and then a smaller sized mesh grill to raised it up (reducing direct heat). Then I have a brown grocery bag lined bottom, and the aspen. If it has a bulge, it should stand out really easy, but after this amount of time digesting, you're looking about halfway down the snake. After 48-72 hours, it should be close to the tail, and be no more than a rounded belly above the cloaca. If it's empty, the belly will be flat.

Progress update
I'm buying a proper stand for this and moving it soon
Ive removed my placeholder hides and added the branches im using to make them. I treated it hy popping it in the oven at 200F for an hour. The hides are going to be a moist cave on the right, and a half log on the left I'm. Putting a bowl in the middle near the back under the fork. My hpuseplants will be replaced by different plants after I buy some organic topsoil to mix in that part.

I also need clamps, gauges, and black paper.
