So now I have obvious traces of nitrite and nitrate in my cycling tank. The thing is, I haven't had to feed the bacteria ammonia for two days now because I had a sudden ammonia spike and I don't know where it came from. I would bring the ppm up to 3 every time it went down but not it's just sitting around at 4 ppm. Is this normal?

Gunna replace all of my substrate with Walstad-style stuff. The only problem is I don't know what I want to cap the soil with. I have sand at the moment, which is good for my loaches, but it's almost impossible to clean.

What are some heavy/large grain non-silica sands I can buy? Or should I just go with 3mm pea gravel?

Well, shit, son. I thought my last yellow shrimp just died in some crevice where I couldn't see her, but I guess she's just been really good at hiding for that last week and a half. I guess I'm glad I didn't change my mind and put blue shrimp in there.

They're pretty simple. Don't keep them with fish big enough to eat them, make sure they have hiding spots (caves and driftwood and so, they love it), and toss in an algae wafer every now and then. I keep two amanos and give them one wafer every third day. If you keep them with fish and plants you may not need to feed them at all, they eat algae and fish shit.

Is there any interesting fish "setup" to be had with a 10 gallon aquarium? Got suggestions? Also I never had fishes, so uh, if there are species a bit more resistant to mistakes than others... The aquarium's a bit cube-shaped, this changes things compared to a longer but not as tall aquarium, right?

It all depends on the size and temperature of your pond.

How do these things even work?

How tight they are seems to have no baring whatsoever on how open they are.

Hey guys it's me the minnow guy again. My family are moving into a new house September so I've decided that I will get a large tank. I've got my eye on a 700 litre. I would stick it with 15-20 discus, 2 should of 25 or so tetras 15 or so corys/ottos, shrimp from my minnow tank, 5 or so half beaks, 6 khuli loaches and a betta. Does that sound like too much? Or could I even fit more in there? If I do indeed have room for more what is recommended. Keep in mind this will be a fully planted soft water aquarium to accomodate the discus.

I heard Tetra wasn't the best but wtf. It came with a cheap little heater that's supposed to keep at 25c +-1c. I put a cheap sticker thermometer on the glass and it does show around 25-24. However, the water feels a lot more like room temp and my cheapo electronic ppm pen also says it's worm temperature.

My sword plant is growing these two gnarly runners that are sort of cramped in my already heavily planted tank.

If the leaves grew underwater they might have to die back first and be replaced with emersed growth, which may again have to die back and be replaced with immersed growth if you plent them underwater afterward. I've seen the sword plants send runners in the little tubes they keep them in at PetSmart, though, so I can't imagine the air alone being an issue. It doesn't sound like too much, but if you want to put a betta in there I would very strongly recommend a plakat (short-finned/wild-type) or a female (or a group of females). The giant-finned bettas often seem to have trouble getting around in large tanks, and they make easy targets for any fish that decide to munch on his fins.

They're the most interesting thing in my tank because they're just always on the go zooming around and having little scraps with each other.

They'll also swim in and around all my plants unlike some of the other fish that stick to open water.

Also when I'm doing maintenance they're the only ones that don't hide and they try and feast on my fingers.

Other fish in my tank are 2 gourami that NEVER come out. A female betta that rarely comes out some meme tetra that don't move and some rosey tetra that move a bit.

Buy a single largish marimo moss ball, or a couple smaller ones. Amazon has plenty of poweheads for under $20. Even some of the cheapo Chinese knockoffs are pretty reliable. I've got a few from JBJ and VicTsing that work just fine.

And answering your question: the loaches need flow. You can keep them in a standard community setup, but they do better with high flow and high oxygenation. You can serve both purposes by getting a powerhead with a venturi.

I'm about to set up a 50 gallon freshwater tank. I have never had live plants in my aquariums before, so I wanted to know about feeding the plants. I have good lighting and a CO2 infuser, but when it comes to any sort of fertilization I am lost.

Is a simple liquid additive sufficient or is it better to use an in-substrate fertilizer? I have also read that some people use actual soil below the sand/gravel substrate for nutrition.

I am planning on having a bed of Dwarf Baby Tears (like pic related).

Also do I need to let the tank cycle before adding the plants (like you would for fish)?

I've had a freshwater/coldwater tank for about 6 years now, originally got it because where I used to live didn't allow any other type of pets. I really liked looking after the tank, and thought about upgrading to a more complicated setup.

Now though, I'm just fed up with this aquarium. I don't get any enjoyment out of it anymore. Evey week something fucking goes wrong with it (lights break, filter breaks etc), water changes are a pain in the ass, and it's just a chore to look after. Even worse since I've now got pets that I can interact with and are easier to keep.

What should I do? I don't really want to get rid of it, since they're still my pets, but I'm just struggling.

Root tabs aren't usually needed unless you're using an inert substrate. You can use a nutritive substrate like potting soil or ADA Aquasoil and not have to worry about it. Most other plant substrates are nonnutritive, but promote root growth. Those do fine without root tabs, but it might take a little longer for heavy root feeders to really take off.
As for dosing the water column, you can do liquid or dry fertilizers. Liquid is more convenient; dry is more cost-effective long-term and gives you more control.
Put the plants in as soon as the tank is set up. They'll actually help speed up the cycling process.

My cichlid is dying. I changed my 50gal tank, and conditioned the water. Ph levels are 8.0. He's the only aggressive fish in the tank.

I was getting ready to move him to his own tank when he turned pale and belly up. He's still alive. Gills are still moving. He's just hanging out at the bottom of the tank. He was lively and fuckin with other fish yesterday.

Does anyone know where I could buy these, or something like them? They're the back corner pieces from the Fluval Ebi. The cheap "universal" ones from eBay look like shit and usually don't fit snugly unless you jury rig something. Last time I emailed Hagen, they told me that they don't sell it as a replacement part and just sent me two of them for free. Yes, but the thing to remember about marimo moss is that it's not actually moss, but a very slow growing beneficial freshwater algae. So compared to, say, java moss, it will never grow. But if you are having algae problems then throwing in some marimo moss will definitely help as it will compete with the other algae, but due to it's slow growth you never have to fear it overcrowding your tank.

The best part is that marimo moss is damn versatile. You can attach it to any kind of frame or mesh, wood or rock, as long as you remember not to put anything on the base, as that will die off due to lack of light. Or you could just keep it in it's natural ball shape and simply rotate it every once in a while.

I remember one anon had a boatload of marimo moss, and didn't know what to do with it, until another anon suggested that they cut them all up and sew them together to make one of those hollow castle like structures entirely out of the moss for the fish and shrimp in the tank.

oooh k heres exactly what i did. hatching them is dummy proof but it took me two tries to actually grow them and they actually just reproduced all on their own. i got brine shrimp eggs from brineshrimpdirect.com and some of the live algae to feed them as well from there.

I used instant ocean sea salt from pets smart and put enough in so the water salinity was 1.024

i hatched the eggs in like a 2L bottle with the salt water and a lamp and drained them 24hrs after, sifted out the babies and then put like 8 or 9 droppers full of them into a little aquarium using water with the same salinity, didnt cycle the tank or any of that shit

i have a crappy little air bubbler from walmart in the tank and a heater thats locked in at 80 degrees

as soon as i put the hatched babies into the growing tank i added the live algae until the water was cloudy with it. I just kept up the live algae but i mix it up with some water before adding it, i would add enough to make my little aquarium cloudy and would do it like maybe every 5 days. eventually (like 3 weeks~~) all the shrimp started to get more visible in the tank and they grew to like 1cm, after about a month and a half i noticed there were more tiny babies swimming around with the adults so i was able to confirm that they were breeding

didnt do any water changes, didnt vac/clean the tank or filter, i just topped up the water once by about 1/2 to keep the salinity the same after some evaporated

Do you have plans for the hood, light, heater, filter, stand, etc? It's usually cheaper to get either an ensemble + equipment or a kit + a stand. Unless you're planning on doing something special like live plants, the equipment in kits is basic, but passable.
As for stocking, if your PetSmart still has rainbow cichlids in stock, I'd highly recommend a couple of them. Otherwise, some kind of 4-8" gourami (opaline, pearl, snakeskin), 4-8" cichlid (kribensis, salvini, smaller acaras), African butterfly fish, smaller plecos, rainbow shark, redtail shark, fancy goldfish. You have a lot of options (obviously not all of those at once).
I'm also fond of the leopard Ctenopoma suggestion (PetSmart sells them as "leaf fish"), but I'd pair him with two or three butterfly fish and a bristlenose pleco.

Neither dojo nor kuhli loaches will eat snails, and if you were looking at kuhli loaches, I don't think your tank is big enough for dojo. Botiid loaches such as pygmy chain loaches are the ones that eat snails. All loaches are social and should be kept in a group. 3 minimum, 6+ recommended.
If you just want something to kill snails you should get assassin snails.

I'm assuming it's rated to be powerful enough for the tank size you have. If the room you keep the tank in is particularly cold, it could be too much for the heater to keep up with. Also, I have a heater that's off by a couple degrees. I just adjusted it accordingly and it works fine, so you might try doing that.

I am looking for the best possible fish to senpai on a empty lake. I need a fish that is able to adapt quickly and can live of eating almost anything but their own. The only predators are free water turtles and birds. I need a pest kind of fish, one that spread at high rates. The lake is about 1.5 meters deep and very large area.

so far, I am considering Tilapia.

What kind of snail is this?
I found him in my tank a while back as a tiny speck.
I only have nerites, and they have been laying eggs everywhere, so that's what I thought he was..

I threw it in with my ghost shrimp, and now there are these egg sacs all over in their tank...
The snail and 4 ghost shrimp are the only things in that tank, so I'm guessing that snail has to be laying these.

Fish: Can only survive in freshwater or saltwater. One's that like saltwater need a set specific gravity.
Humans: Can survive in freshwater and saltwater. Don't give a shit how unsalty or salty the water is.

Fish: Have to be kept at a certain temperature range between 5 degrees of their ideal temp or they die.
Humans: can survive temperatures from below freezing to desert heat

Fish: Die if they get a little stressed out
Humans: Become stronger and faster when they're stressed out.
