What's your stance on adopting an older dog? I'm looking into adopting my first dog, and all of the ones I'm interested in are like 5 to 7 years old medium to large size mutts, which just about pegs them as senior dogs. Personally, I'd love to adopt one of them, but I've been told that vet bills skyrocket with senior dogs.
I love older dogs. They get so lazy and snuggly. Sometimes they have health issues but sometimes not, just like with younger dogs.
i saw a german tv show lately which stated that the average dog is 6600€ in veterinarian stuff in his lifetime.
In total a dog is about 13-14000 € with all expenses. (always thought they were much cheaper.)

I've been advised to get a first dog that's past the puppy stage but before it's a senior, so about 3-4 years. Dogs get old eventually, but I think their logic is that if I got a younger one I'd have a longer time with the dog before I'm swamped in vet bills
if the dog doesn't have bad arthritis or other known health issues when you're adopting them at that age, chances are they're pretty healthy dogs. pricy chronic issues usually start to pop up before then
