Alternative to a Corn Snek for a first time Snek keeper that only wants to keep 1 snek but wants it to be a cool as fuck active snek?

Anyone?
>>
>>2026137
kingsnake for sure. My albino florida sheds almost 2 times a month, eats at every chance I offer, and has maybe regurgitated once when I made a rookie owner's mistake. all in all 10/10 snake, not as common as a corn. but still common enough to be easy to find info on. Will not go off of food like balls.

kings can have some of the coolest black/white combinations with selective breeding. Not as much variety in terms of colour possibility as corns (unless you cross breed them with other colubrids) but awesome patterns.

Hey /an/, for reasons Ive got to keep my snake in a box for a bit at a friend's place. Id rather not be a bother and ask them to turn up the thermostat to the 75 degrees or so my baby would be most comfortable at, so I was considering throwing a few of those magnesium-based hothands things in there with him. Ive heard that on long trips they can suck out all the oxygen and suffocate a snake, but Id really just be giving him one to sit on in a well ventilated shoebox with a towel thrown in it.

What does /an/ think of this plan? Am I a fool or a visionary!?!?
>>
>>2026137
depends on how active you want them to be. Balls are easier to take care of, or at least harder to kill, and are plenty active when you handle them.
>>
>>2026218
1.why do you have to keep it in a shoebox?
2. how long do you intend to keep it there?
>>
>>2026218
Buy heat pad for humans with temperature adjust from pharmacy. Set it on low, stick it under 1/3 of the box. Done.
>>
>>2026218
No heat packs. Those hot hands things get way too hot. When shipping reptiles, there is a different style of heat pack you use that is designed to produce low heat and last 12-24 hours. Usually they are hard to find locally and must be ordered online.

And don't use a cardboard box. Recommend you go to camping or hardware store and purchase a styrofoam cooler (the cheap kind). Line the inside of cooler with newpaper. Drill some air holes. Tape the lid down SOLID. And I mean tape all around the edge. Do not underestimate snek ability to get out of boxes.

1.Basically my vet is on the other side of town and I have things to be doing that day. Long story short I need to bring my snake with me, so...
2. He'd be in this setup for probably about 12 hours tops.

>>2026244
>>2026232
Im not shipping him, I just need something to keep him comfy and calm for 12 hours or so while I run other errands.
>>
>>2026275
well 12 hours, you probably don't even need to worry about it depending on what kind of snake you got
>>
>>2026279
He's just a ball, but I figure he'd be more comfortable and less prone to trying to escape if he were warmer than 70 degrees
>>
>>2026280
if you can, i think the styrofoam cooler is your best bet
if you can warm it up initially, it'll hold it for a while

>>2026171

>>
>>2026275
>Im not shipping him

I gathered that. Just that when putting reptile in a box with heat packs, you have to use the ones designed for that purpose. No hot hands.
>>
>>2026293

haha, yeah. The taste isn't terrible either. It's not as sweet as you expect it to be from the smell but it's definitely far from vomit inducing gross. It's kinda like a protein shake taste.

btw, the watermelon & mango flavour smells even better than the nana & papaya.

I caught him eating it already. I'm really happy now.
>>
>>2026320
Definitely going to have to try that with my crestie. He is so little and I fear that if I don't hand feed him he doesn't eat. :( But I'm trying not to spoil him by hand feeding either.
The struggle.
>>
>>2026325

Don't worry about how much he's eating... I know it's hard not to be fretting new mother about it. Baby geckos eat so little it is often hard to tell they have eaten at all.

Hey, while we're on the topic this is the list of mrp's I have tried with my colony of four (3 cresties, 1 garg) in order of best feeding response, no.1 being most universally and enthusiastically nommed by the gecks.

1. Pangea mix w/insects
2. Pangea watermelon/mango
3. Pangea banana/papaya
4. Clark's gargoyle gecko diet (the cresties like this one better than the crestie version)
5. Repashy Classic cgd
6. Clark's crested gecko
7. Repashy grubs n' fruit
8. Repashy cgd 3.0
9. Big Fat Gecko mix

If you get a pure or high-content super dwarf, they only max out at 8', and 6'-7' seems to be more common. SDs are becoming more and more common, so the prices have dropped a lot. Just be sure to ask about the parents' sizes and percentages to be sure you've got a pure/high-content.

>>2026025
Here's my soon-to-be giant snake. Unfortunately, all my recent photos are feeding photos. She grew a half a foot in 2-3 weeks, so I was hoping to get new photos, but I've had to work the past several days. I'll see about getting some more of her tomorrow. Large rat for scale, but as stated, she's grown a lot since this photo so this is no longer an accurate photo.

>>2026218
The hot hands get too hot, it's the 40 hour packs that are used for shipping. Not hot hands. Because they get too hot.

Suck it up and ask your friend to bump the heat, there's no excuse.

>>2026232
Terrible idea, you can't properly regulated them.

>>2026280
As long as temps aren't below 70F, you don't have to worry too awfully much about heat. It's not preferable at all, so if possible bring it up to 75F, but I doubt 12 hours at 70F will hurt it. Just be sure to warm it up slowly before putting it back in its regular enclosure.
>>
>>2026333

Boa master race. Ball python fags need not apply.

Why do people choose pacmen frogs over african bullfrogs? They're just as cheap, much more active, more wow factor if you care about that, and only need a mildy larger enclosure.
>>

>much more active
that's a downside

>and only need a mildly larger enclosure.
they're bigger and much more active, they need more than a mildly larger enclosure.

what do you do with snakes that you have to get rid of?

mine are both perfectly healthy but I am moving to a different country and won't be able to take them with me

I have a milk and a corn, both are actually native to where I live so wouldn't they be fine if I just brought them to a pond?
>>
>>2026431
If they're used to prekilled food they might not adapt.
Try seeing if your local pet store will take them.
>>
>>2026435
I do think you're wrong on that point though, and it seems like a pretty widespread belief because I read it everywhere, but snakes don't lose their ability to hunt, it is just instinct for them.

I'll see anyways about a pet store because it would make me feel better lol.

As far as pacman frogs go, is C. ornata or C. cranwelli more common in the pet trade? They damn near look the same and I don't know which kind mine is (not that it really matters, I'm just curious).

Also frogs are seriously the best amphibians to own. There are so many different kinds that behave and look so uniquely, and there are usually a lot of different looking individuals within each type. I'm in love

They only do that when they're really excited about something. Usually young geckos do it more than adults. Most common time to see the tail waggle is when a male is getting ready to mate, then the tail wiggles so fast it looks like it's vibrating.

Hey /an/, guy who bought a sailfin dragon last year posting again.

If any of you remember, I bought this girl last year from some guy trying to get rid of her, and then came to find out she was extremely wild (to the point where I suspect she was wild caught, especially because he said he got her from backwaterreptiles). I was advised by /an/ to do the normal taming thing of giving her space, let her see me putting food into her enclosure, etc. It's been well over a year now and the only improvement I've seen is that she'll readily go to her food dish a little bit after I put food into it, though I think she only does it because I'm sitting at my computer and being pretty stationary.

She still flips out if I get too close to her, if she's eating and I move just a bit, such as turning around to watch her, she'll dart back up to her "safe zone".

I'm guessing there's just really nothing I can do for her besides just giving her a calm and stress-free environment?
>>
>>2026735

...not sure why it spun my picture around...
>>
>>2026678

I have a corn snake and I'm considering getting another snake now. I am thinking of something that is larger but not necessarily longer.
I'm leaning towards a ball python considering they are pretty chill and cute.
What morphs do you guys like on them and what tips can you give me?
I saw some cheap super pastels at my local shop and a blue eyed leucistic but thats extremely expensive.
>>
>>2026692

>>
>>2026663
Okay that's what I figured. I just became unsure when I looked through a breeder's webpage and saw that they bred only C. cranwelli and C. cornuta
>>
What can i do in terms of lighting up a snake cage during the day. Can i use a red or blue at bulb on the same end of my heat pad, what about a uvb bulb (even though this wont really help them, but it shouldn't hurt them)
>>
>>2026814
Unless your species requires UVB, don't use it. Go with the regular or red heat bulb on the hot end of the enclosure
>>
>>2026821
would that make my hot end to hot for my snake if i still have my heat mat on?

Thanks for the response guys.

What do you think of the Mexican Black Kingsnake as a start snake?

I do not plan on getting anymore snakes only a 2nd for them to breed in the future.

Opinions?
>>
>>2026835
Dont breed animals unless you know how to keep a lineage and you have the means to keep them if you cant sell them.
>>
>>2026823
You should know what temperature your snake needs for its hot side. Add the lamp, and if it's too hot, then don't go with it.
>>
I want to get a red tail boa but im not sure how to handle a snake that could possibly get bigger than me. Any tips on handling and care? I've owned corns and ball pythons in the past so i have experience.
>>
>>2026865
If you dont think you can handle it you probaby cant.
A rainbow boa is a smaller and still beautiful.
>>
>>2026865
I started with corns aswell, then got a full grown constrictor from a friend, she's around 2.6m now, and ridiculously easy to handle. She's got some weight to her, and I gotta watch out not to drop her if I have her around my shoulders or neck, because she's kinda clumsy at time and doesn't really hold on to me well. Also, you don't really notice the length that much, rolled up she's kinda the size of a cat/small dog.
And my boa is also super friendly, but I have no idea if that's the usual thing, though I personally have not heard of people with really angry boas.

I have and do breed all varieties of birds and understand about genetics, lineage and care for the offspring.

In that sense I am not and will not be irresponsible.

Is the Mexican Black (as a species) any different from your average king snake care?
>>
>>2026896
Last I checked they like it hotter than most other species (85-90F during the day)
Otherwise they're pretty much the same
>>
>>2026901

So if I were to get a 4ft Viv what area should the heat mat cover?

Is half the area correct?
>>
>>2026903
Sounds about right.
>>
>>2026905

So 4ft viv with a 2ft matt - substrate, feeding/water bowls, thermometer and hydrometer, hide and decorations and I should be fine.

Feed it frozen mice/rats relative to snake size.
Spot clean daily and change water daily.
Clean/disinfect once a month.
Feed biweekly/weekly/fortnightly depending on snake size.

Life is good?
>>
>>2026906

And handle it at least 3 days after feeding or before feeding for exercise?

I have kind of settled on the MBK there are maybe 3 or so available from some petshops will wait for a good one of a good age.

I have another questions.

For a 3+ year old MBK what size viv should I get him. I do not really want to upgrade.

Vivexotic seem to have some good ones.

http://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/reptile-supplies/vivariums-416/compact-vivariums--1310/vivexotic-repti-home-maxi-vivarium-xl-beech-414239.html

I am thinking of getting this its is 4.5ft across and 1.7ft up and back.

I have heard that snakes might get stressed in a large viv but I do not really want to end up buying two different sized vivsas the snake gets older.

I would look to get one that is 3 or 4 years old or more.

That's where viewing the parents and asking for percentages come in. If you get a pure super dwarf, they shouldn't exceed 9', however you feed them. And even an 11' retic doesn't seem all that big. My retic is 4.5' but looks 3', and a 9' retic looks 6' until you stretch it out.

>>2026357
Yeah I've seen people with their retics, and I'd guess them to be 6'-7' long, but they stretch them out and they're actually like 10'. Keep them in shape, and their size is really misleading.

>>2026738
Probably because it was taken that way. If you have Microsoft, try viewing the Live version. Switching it around there should fix the photo-spinning thing. Works for me, anyways.

>>2026814
UVB isn't necessary, but it won't hurt them either. Snakes can actually see UVB, so providing UVB can enrich them since they are able to see everything the way they'd normally be able to see. Kinda like giving glasses to something with bad eyesight.

Other than that, just a regular white light on a timer to be on 12 hours a day is sufficient.

>>2026930
Not true. Many start out docile. They can be kinda nippy as babies, but that's true for any other species. My first BRB didn't need to be "tamed," my second one liked to put on a show but she was all bark and no bite, and the majority of people I see are always like "I'd heard about how nippy they are, so I'm surprised mine is so docile!" There are probably plenty of nippy babies, but they don't deserve the reputation of being inherently nippy, as babies or otherwise. I won't be getting my other two until spring, but I doubt they'll be all that defensive either.

Pic related is my first BRB, he's gonna be 17 months in a few weeks.

How good would a crestie do in a planted vivarium? I guess it would be more like two plants in a dirt substrate and some other fake decorations, like suction cup wall vines. I have two plants that I bought and I need to find a way to increase the regular humidity of my baby gecko's bin. It would also be a relief to not have to worry so much about the pooping.
>>
>>2027124
Planted tanks work well for them. Check Google for 'gecko safe plants' to make sure your plants aren't toxic to them. Make a drainage layer of bio balls or clean large aquarium gravel, put vinyl screen on top, then substrate on that. Stick in plants. Put daytime light on a timer for 12 hours on so the plants don't die. Optionally add a culture of springtails. If done right, pretty much the only thing you need to clean from then on is food bowls, decor, and the glass walls.
>>
>>2027124
He'll do great. You'll want to make sure that you have springtails and/or isopods in order for the poop to be broken down, but those are easily obtainable online.

Target, in the big ass plastic bin section.
Just take a soldering gun to it and melt some holes, less ventilation the longer it takes to dry out.
>>
>>2027155
It just has to be something that has some airflow and doesn't absorb water. For aquarium gravel the kind to use is the large pebble variety so there is some gaps for air to move between. The whole point is to prevent the roots of your plants from being waterlogged.
>>
>>2027152
My damage is from not using one for a week while I waited for the thermostat to come in the mail. Should have been less impatient, my floor suffered for it. I'm surprised the sterlite tub didn't melt.
>>
>>2027171
Depending on the species, it may have been better to not use one at all until came in.

It's possible the surface had a lower threshold than the tub, and it didn't even burn the wood, just the chemicals on top. I'm not sure. Most tubs have a very high temperature threshold before they begin to warp/melt. The lids seem to be less resistant, though.

god fucking dammit /an/ im so stressed trying to find out about snake care. For the last few days i've been trying to understand proper heating for snakes and its so fucking hard to follow along. I had a leopard gecko and a bearded dragon growing up so i have experience with reptiles but i can't fucking remember shit about caring for them and it seems like i did it wrong. What i did was i would have two 12 hour cycles, day time with the basking light, night time with the heat pad both of these placed on the same side. But when im reading snakes it seems like i need both a red bulb and heat pad at the same time on a thermostat and at night just use the heat pad also on thermostat but i have no idea how to run the probe to not show the wire on the side of the tank or even if i should put it inside the tanks bottom, and how i can avoid the snake hurting himself on it. Not to mention i should use a pvc cage for a ball python to keep humidity up but these fucking pvc cages, i have no idea where i can put a fucking heat bulb or pad BEAUSE THESE MANUFACTURES DONT SHOW PICTURES OR INCLUDED DESCRIPTIONS. So in the end here is what I want to do, it might not be the "best" or "perfect" way but it makes the most sense

Ball Python enclosures

20 gallon glass tank
heat pad that covers one third of the tank on one end and the heat lamp on the same end
UVB fluorescent for extra lighting
aspen bedding
plenty of nice hides for a small guy in a large tank
good size dog water dish on cool end
Test out some bulbs to figure out how to get a 90 basking spot
set a timer for light on 12 hour cycle and heat pad on 12 hour cycle
buy a mister and spray in the morning and when i get home along with refill water dish to get 70% humidity.

Make adjustments for different breeds of snakes but follow the same general rules

am i going to kill my snake in a month doing it this way.
>>
>>2027729
no need for lamps on your snakes Terrarium, it will do fine with just the heat pad at the correct temperature, just make sure there is a nice temperature gradient
>>
>>2027745
so what i can basically do is keep the UVB for general lighting and keep the pad on 24 hour, is there a max temp for these matts or is it basically im going to need a thermostat. where the hell do i put the probe for the thermostat.
>>
>>2027729
I'd advise heat tape for PVC, heat pads aren't always strong enough to heat through the plastic. Also, the heat pads aren't big enough. Heat tape is cheaper, more reliable, and heats stronger.

Probe goes outside the enclosure, in between the heat tape and the bottom of the enclosure. That's why there's probe shapes cut out on the bottom of the cage. At least, Animal Plastics does this.

20 gallons is not big enough fro an adult ball python, would be ok for a baby, but once they hit a year they'll be way too big.

I'd advise a CHE over a heat bulb that produces light.

UVB isn't necessary for snakes, they get all of their nutrients from their food. UVB is good for enrichment, but isn't necessary for health.

Any bedding that holds humidity. If you're using a tank, aspen will not be good enough to provide proper humidity.

You need a thermostat for all heating elements, bulbs or otherwise. If a bulb is strictly for providing light and no heat, it should be on a timer for 12 hours.

No need for misters with the proper set up, and a mister system cannot compare to properly-provided humidity. Misters provide wetness, not humidity.

90cm x 45cm x (whatever height) is okay for an adult ball python. Only if you end up with an especially large female will that be a little small.
>>
>>2028199
Oh okay then
Might still be a better idea to build one as it may be cheaper

tip i have found for saving a little time in exchange for a little bit of extra money with DIY is to buy a kitchen cabinet section. those come in good terrarium sizes, like 36 wide x 24 deep. Then all you need to do is change out the back panel for wood and install glass/acrylic on the front.

Not that anon, but you do realize boa constrictors have a more varied diet in the wild than the european lab rats we give them in captivity right? The whole "only give them rats" thing is something we humans imposed on these animals out of convenience more than anything - they're even known to eat Ocelots back where they're from.

I want to make sure and change my previous question a bit.

With enough hides will a baby Mexican Black King Snake be ok in a 4.5ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft viv?

Will the heat pad (2ft heat pad) be too large for the young snake and kinda burn it out or should i just set a lower temp?
>>
>>2028400
General rules of thumb for snek tank is 1 sq ft per 1 foot of snek. 1/3 to 1/2 of tank heated. Hides on the hot side and cold side. It's preferred that the hides are similar so the snake doesn't have to decide on a favorite.
>>
>>2028395

Genetically CB snakes (and other animals) are often far removed (or modified) from their wild counterparts.
>>
>>2028403

I understand that as a minimum but is that a maximum as well?

>>2028404
>Genetically CB snakes (and other animals) are often far removed (or modified) from their wild counterparts.

If you're talking about color mutations that were manipulated in captivity, you're right. If you're talking about physiological properties including their digestive systems, you're way off.
>>
>>2028403
wait even for something like a ball?
>>
>>2028400
Make sure you have a lot of decor and hide spots throughout the cage. That's an awesome sized cage for an adult sized snake of that species, but for a baby it might be a little bit too big. Make sure it won't feel exposed and insecure due to any "dead space".

>>2028403
>>2028424
It really depends on whether the snake is a sedentary type, like a ball python which is an ambush predator or an active colubrid with large territorial coverages, like an eastern indigo.

Thanks
I did not want to get a smaller viv just to then go and buy a bigger one later.

Ill put several hides around the place with low hanging silk plants and a lot of cover.

Is Aspen the generally accepted bedding?

Im thinking about making the viv look real nice and silk plants and jungle look does not seem too nice to me. I would have thought a more rocky look with a finer bedding (to mimic sand) would look quite nice I just don't know how suitable it is for the MBK.
>>
>>2028447
Your point here seems disjointed, but I'll try my best to understand what you're saying.

>I mean the idea that because they ate it in the wild it is a negative thing that it is not provided in captivity is in general not the best approach to diet.
I never insinuated one way or another what they reportedly eat in the wild is a negative thing. I still don't know what exactly you're telling me in your latter point, but the point is these animals have evolved to eat what they seem fit. They're more generalists than specialists; they eat small to medium mammals and other reptiles and do not stick to eating rats. For you to be thinking eating one guinea pig is too much for them is absurd in my opinion. By no means am I advocating guinea pigs as part of a regular diet since they are very high in fat, but certainly for an animal that can take down an ocelot, small deer and porcupines, I don't see it as absolutely detrimental as you think.

>>2028450
Aspen is fine. The only thing to watch out for is they're quick to mold if it gets wet and there isn't enough ventilation. I don't know what your cage looks like and how much airflow it has, so keep that in mind come shedding time and you're spraying down the cage.

IF your snake seems stressed and refuses to feed, feel free to get a much smaller plastic bin for it as a temporary solution. It's boring and sterile looking, but it will help in settling down your new snake. MBKs are hardy and it should be fine, I think. I've kept hatchling indigo snakes in 4x2x2 before without a problem with coconut fiber mixed with sand and cork barks for hides.
>>
>>2028467

Ah I agree with you as a part of a balanced diet just not to go into thinking that captive breds can switch from their current diet to a wild one without issues would be wrong. As you said its a matter of balance.
>>
>>2028448

Yes that will be ample space for your froggy friend.
>>
>>2028475
I don't think there would be digestive issues for captive bred and born boa constrictors to consume what their ancestors ate in the wild. These snakes have evolved in a certain way over the years and integral functions such as digestive systems do not dissipate that easily, over the mere decades of being in captivity. I truly think it's a matter of convenience for us people to feed them what's being industrialized at a large scale as "snake food". I'm guilty of it too, I mostly feed my snakes rodent prey items, but for certain species I'll incorporate chicks and fish into their diet without any trouble at all, despite their dam, sire, grand dam, and grand sires only ever eating rodents according to the breeder I got them from.
>>
Any tips for getting a ball python used to handling? The guy who had her before kept her in subpar conditions and handled her poorly, so now she's rather nippy.

She's only six months old.
>>
>>2028521

Put your hand in the tank every day or every other day for fiften minutes and let snake smell you. After a while snake will come out and investigate. Then maybe will try to climb your arm. It takes a little while to regain a snake's trust after previous bad experiences but it can be done. Basically you're just trying to communicate to the snake that you are not aggressive and will not try to eat or hurt it.

You do realize their diet is mostly birds, which have little to no fat right? Guinea pigs are higher in fat than a jumbo rat, and jumbo rats are terrible enough as it as well.

The diet of a boa is virtually fat-free, and they have become very sensitive to high levels of fat in their diet. Having too much fat in their diet will kill them, even if it takes 6 years and one 3+ month fast to do it.

Fatty food is a big no-no with boa constrictors, they cannot process it properly and they are incredibly prone to fatty liver disease.

Perfectly a-ok foods for adult boas: large rats MAXIMUM size (no jumbos), rabbits, quail, other safe birds, etc.

I'm not here to set a strict "rat only" diet, but that doesn't change how terrible of a food source Guinea pigs are, even in a varied diet I'd steer far away from them.

>You do realize their diet is mostly birds, which have little to no fat right?
you're incorrect. boa constrictors, as i mentioned are food generalists, meaning they do not have specific diet and will eat what they can capture. they eat small to medium mammals, birds, bats, and reptiles. you're also incorrect in assuming birds have little to no fat. it depends on the species of the birds, but for example please feel free to refer to the Day Old Chicken crude fat % vs. mice and rats. you're thinking of lean chicken breasts, but in actuality birds can be quite fatty as well. are you thinking boa constrictors will say "oh that species of bird is too high in fat, so i can't eat that"?.

University of Michigan source:
http://animaldiversity.org/accounts/Boa_constrictor/#food_habits

>Guinea pigs are higher in fat than a jumbo rat, and jumbo rats are terrible enough as it as well.
I'm already aware guinea pigs are higher in fat than regular european lab rats we give them, which is something i already mentioned here
>>2028467

>The diet of a boa is virtually fat-free, and they have become very sensitive to high levels of fat in their diet. Having too much fat in their diet will kill them, even if it takes 6 years and one 3+ month fast to do it.
you're literally talking out of your ass and i'll explain why below.

>Fatty food is a big no-no with boa constrictors, they cannot process it properly and they are incredibly prone to fatty liver disease.
>Perfectly a-ok foods for adult boas: large rats MAXIMUM size (no jumbos), rabbits, quail, other safe birds, etc.
let's compare the %crude fat of large rats vs. guinea pigs

Guinea pig 46.1%
Large rat 32.6%

if boa constrictors were absolutely sensitive to fatty foods as you seem to think, they all would have died in captivity a long time ago. it's a good thing what you're saying is simply not true.

Still can't get my female boa to try rats. I tried dipping them in boiling water, braining them, etc. Nothing works for her. I'm going to try getting some mouse droppings and used litter and rolling the rat in it, but if that doesn't work, what do?

The male has now outpaced the female by a whopping 50 grams even though the female was 30g heavier than him when i got her simply because she doesn't eat as reliably.
>>
>>2028767

Not arguing one side or the other just to say that the data is given in %percentages so comparisons are not necessarily absolute given size differences.

>I'm not here to set a strict "rat only" diet, but that doesn't change how terrible of a food source Guinea pigs are, even in a varied diet I'd steer far away from them.

a medium sized guinea pig vs. a large sized rat have similar amount of fat content. having said that, since guinea pigs here would have less protein. no real reason to "steer far away from them", once in a while a slightly less protein combination wouldn't be as detrimental as you think.

kek. i apologize for my elongated responses as seen above. it would be normal for your Florida kingsnake to dip into 60s during winter for breeding purposes. Many breeders will do this on purpose when they are of course to incite such behaviors. If it stay there consistently, it will go into a brumation/hibernation stage where it will slow down its activity including food consumption to completely ceasing all activities. I wouldn't worry too much.

Today I checked my crested geckos food bowl to change it and it was almost entirely empty. I made more than i usually would by accident too. He ate it all in the timeframe he'd barely scratch the zoo med stuff.

Hello Once Again,

I am currently nearing checkout for the Mexican Black KSnake habitat and I have an issue with the bedding.
Aspen is kinda ugly and I don't think it will look to great. I know that MBK's are from the Sonora desert and a desert-esque habitat would be nice. I have also read that sand is not a good thing for snakes?

Now Zoo-Med seem to do a nice repti-sand and they seem to be a good brand. Would it be ok for my MBK to have a zoo-med repti-sand bedding?

That is all.
Thanks.
>>
>>2029096
Just use fucking aspen. Of course you will be using a Heating pad, packed aspen will reduce direct heating and the snake will love to burrow because snakes like that. California isn't a desert like you think, think like Chappral not barren sand land.
>>
>>2029100
>Dat shit ugly tho.

Nothing else that would be near as good and not hurt the snake?

Aspen reminds me of hamsters.
>>
>>2029102
Newspaper? It doesn't matter what you think, it matters that it doesn't kill or maim a living creature.
>>
>>2029106

Yes that is true and the health of the snake comes first so I will not put anything dangerous. I am just looking for alternatives to Aspen which at the least is darker and smaller and less hamstery.
>>
>>2029106
>>2029100

Crushed walnut shells?
>>
Since we're on the subject of substrate...

I just did a 1 inch layer of fir bark chips + 1 1/2 inches of aspen shavings and my BP is loving it; never seen a snake burrow so hard in their lives.
>>
As the substrate thing is kind of Aspen only for now I have a question about heating.

Heat mats and wood vivs seem to be bad together...would an AHS heater be pro?
>>
>>2029142
Heat tape + electronic thermostat + sterilite bin rack set-up if you want the ultimate piece of mind.

On wood vivariums, it depends on the wood the vivarium is made of.

I'm not a fan of overhead lamps as heaters because they zap moisture terribly.

Of course, it depends on the species you're trying to house. I only deal with species that need belly heat, so.

(I hate heat mats, they have a nasty tendency to fail and burn whatever is underneath. Just check Herps N Derps' picture above.)
>>
>>2029145

For an MBK the viv is chipboard with a finish on it I believe.

Is heat tape the same as heat cables?

As it is a large viv it would prob have to be a mat but with mats do they give any heat downwards or is it only upwards.

If i were to go with a mat i think I would put it sandwiched between some sort of cork or insulation sheets inside the bottom of the viv.

Does that sound about right.
Literally been spending an hour going through all sorts of heating options in circles :D
>>
P.S.

Any opinions on using a waterfall feature as a source of water as opposed to a bowl?

Assuming it wont spill over into the substrate?

>>
>>2029152
bad idea. impossible to keep clean. with a snake you want to be cleaning that water bowl every three days minimum. it just isn't practical.

worry more about good husbandry and less about fancy decor, especially if this is your first snake.
>>
To kingsnake guy with the aspen: Look at cypress mulch, its a pretty common substrate for snakes as well. Also DO NOT get crushed walnut shells, its even worse than sand
>>2029224
I don't think I'ver heard of using sphagnum as a full substrate except for maybe herps that need like 100% humidity all the time
Just put some in a hide box, they'll use it
>>
>>2029202
I thought that earth would be quite bad as its so small there is a good chance the snake might swallow too much?

There was a forum post about someone's snake missing the mouse and getting a mouthful of the stuff.

>>2029269
Yeah I guess it was too hopeful.
There is that "viperkeeper" guy on youtube that hand-waters all his snakes as a relatively good bonding mechanism. I guess that could be an option if there is time.

>>2029270
Ok not walnut shells.

I think I will go with a mix of mostly small beech chips with some aspen mixed in (if the beech chips get in the way of burrowing).
>>
>>2029273

if you're using beech make sure to feed your snake outside the tank. just use a plastic tub with paper towel for feeding.
>>
>>2028767
They are generalists, but birds still make up a majority of their diet.

They'll eat whatever they can, doesn't mean it's not good for them, and the impacts of a fatty diet is well known and studied in boa constrictors, and the tendency towards fatty liver disease has been observed in most, if not all, boa species. I am not talking out of my ass when it's a very well known, common phenomena for boas to die early when fed too much. I am not talking out of my ass when even ball pythons, a species generally seen to be able to be fed like a dumpster, are also having increased instances of fatty liver disease.

The thing is, boas dying from fatty liver disease IS a common occurrence. It is the #1 killer of boa constrictors in captivity.

>>2028774
No a Guinea pig has almost twice the fat of a large rat. I think you're thinking of jumbo rats, the fat content in Guinea pigs is over 10% more than even a jumbo rat. It's probably more like 30% more than a large rat.

kek. Males generally are more outgoing than females I have noticed. There are some exceptions but that's the usual tendency. My two pictus girls are split one on each side of the spectrum; one is out pretty much always, doesn't even bother using a hide to sleep; the other i see like once a month. My male crestie is crepuscular for some reason, gets up at 4pm everyday and back to sleep by 7pm. The two crestie girls are more of what i'd call conventional crestie braveness and behaviour. The garg is... well, she's a garg, meaning she's weird. Weird sleeping positions and hours, sometimes doesn't eat for two weeks then pigs out for two weeks, sometimes wide awake during the day, sometimes hides forever.

I called my local pet store. I'm gonna use crepe myrtles out of my front yard.... Question is... Is it bad? Pet store dude said 420bakeit and it won't matter. It seems that crepe mrytle wood isn't bad?

I'm also starting to worry because my home is 120 years old and all the wood is all reclaimed cypress wood. Is that bad for snakes? I feel like once a month I panic over when or if something is bad for my snake. End of day he is in a completely glass enclosure and has aspen bedding.

Just took a look at safe woods for vivs and it appears crepe myrtle is safe, yep. I cannot imagine how the wood in your house could negatively affect your snek. The woods you need to avoid for in-tank use are cedar, pine, anything with thorns, anything that leaks sap, and anything that has been soaked in pesticides.

I just cut branches off of trees. Make sure it's live wood and let it dry out, a live branch will last longer than a dead one on the ground.

I don't treat it for anything, I just let it dry out for a few weeks. Not like anything in the wood will harm my animals anyway.

Just stay away from cedar, pine, and any tree/bush that has poisonous bark.

>>2029910
There's no way that's 6' tall. 6' long maybe, but it looks more like the size of my 20 gallon long tank. If it is 6' long, it also looks way less than 30". I have a 6'x2' and it looks nowhere near as cramped as that.

Albino king snake guy here
something kinda cool my mom told me tonight. I knew she had a iguana before I was born and a little after (she gave it to the Audubon Aquarium which is a top 10 aquarium in the nation). She told me how she used to feed it all kinds of food and loved it to death. Said it was just like a dog, she allowed it to free roam her apartment in the frenchquarter. She said it would bask, hide, etc. She brought it everywhere. She said a special treat she would do was feed it haagen-dazs strawberry ice-cream. I just thought it was kinda funny. The iguana's name was bunny, my mom got her in the 80s and she lived till the early 2000's. Very few medical issues, 1 surgery which was to removed her eggs from her (some sort of health issue because she never mated).

>She named her iguana 'bunny' because she got it on easter

which is why she really likes my snake, is because she had a reptile when she was in her late teens-early 20s
>>
>>2030133
>free roams
>feeds ice cream
>thinks of a reptile like a dog
>takes it out in public

All of these are bad choices, hopefully your mom doesn't do any of this anymore.

Some people will argue with me on the free-roaming with big lizards, but unfortunately it's really bad for their healthy. Especially for tropical lizards, because try as you may you cannot provide enough humidity or heat for a free-roaming reptile, even with "basking spots" or "humid boxes" laying around. And a tegu owner I saw on a forum found out the hard way when she took her tegu to the vet to get some x-rays and found out it had severe dehydration and minor MBD despite appearing outwardly healthy. Almost lost her lizard.

It's best to leave reptiles in their cages, and bring them outside for interaction every once in awhile.

When the fuck is the humidity low in N.O. ?
ITS MORE LIKE 100%
>>
>>2030144
That's....not that old, and 60% is still too low for an iguana. Also, I doubt your house was 60% all the time.

>>2030172
Babies tend to be good eaters, wait until it's 1-3 years old, that's usually when the bad eating starts. Sometimes babies are bad eaters as well, but it's usually when they're older.

Tell me the life expectancy for an iguana pls.
>>
>>2030432
20-30 years as far as I know, so barely breaking into the 20's isn't all that impressive.
>>
>>2030444
20-30 years is horseshit. thats like saying living to 80 isn't cool because your great ain't chain smoked till she was 100
>>
>>2030453
Aunt. Not ain't.
>>
>>2030444
>20-30 years
bullshit
I dont know where you got that but every source I've just looked at either says 15-20 or just 20.
>>
>>2030424
60% would be acceptable as long as he got regular baths and was misted
IIRC 65-75 is the ideal zone
>>
>>2030444
>>2030453
>>2030457
20 is the norm but 20+ isnt rare
>>
>>2030458
70-80 years old in humans is the norm
100 isn't rare

It doesn't make people who live to 70-80 are unimportant

No that's like saying it's not impressive you live to be 40 when the average life span is 70.

>>2030456
Hence why I said "as far as I know." Still, if the average life is 15-20, it still isn't impressive if it lived a couple years past 20. I'd be more impressed if it lived to be in its mid-to-late 20's or to its 30's.

>>2030457
Nope, it's not actually. Bathing does not hydrate a reptile as well as constant exposure to humidity does.

The person who owned the dehydrated tegu bathed the tegu regularly, and offered multiple humid hides throughout their house. It shed well, but a vet examination showed it to be severely dehydrated.

Family. We live in New Orleans, we are a sub tropical zone.
>>
>>2030467
DESU we are just arguing over past animals. No point DESU.

I have a albino King, but I really want a ball one day. Only thing I don't feel competent with is humidity. Partially because my emperor scorpion died after 8 months once.... Humidity feels like something I'll mess up.

Why are you mentioning family, again? Whether or not you live in a subtropical zone isn't changing much when iguanas are tropical.

I live in NC, and my average household humidity is 50-60%, but my ball python would still become dehydrated if I didn't provide him extra humidity even though it's technically "within acceptable parameters." I know this because when I was 12 and stupid I provided him with virtually no heat and absolutely no extra humidity (seriously, 12 year olds have no business being the sole caretaker of an animal). The only source of heat he had was a red heat lamp stuck to the top of a wooden box inside his enclosure, he'd have to go inside it to stay warm. Despite my house being 50-60% humidity and him not having a heat source sucking all that away, he still shed in pieces for 5 years until I got older and smarter and realized how stupid it all was.

I know we are, just saying hopefully that anon's mom doesn't still do it, and why.

Is it usual for crested geckos to shed, like, overnight? My lil babby was looking dull gray last night, and when I opened the enclosure lid today, he was popping with color, no signs of leftover shed (I put the humidity up to like 90%. When I bought him from the store, he had a bunch of stuck pieces of shed on his eyelashes and back).

And also, how to get the lil guy to eat crickets? Should I put him in a different enclosure to eat them? I doubt he'd get any if I put them in his cage, he spends all his time at the very top.

Pic related is the lil dude last night and then today
