Alternative to a Corn Snek for a first time Snek keeper that only wants to keep 1 snek but wants it to be a cool as fuck active snek?

kingsnake for sure. My albino florida sheds almost 2 times a month, eats at every chance I offer, and has maybe regurgitated once when I made a rookie owner's mistake. all in all 10/10 snake, not as common as a corn. but still common enough to be easy to find info on. Will not go off of food like balls.

kings can have some of the coolest black/white combinations with selective breeding. Not as much variety in terms of colour possibility as corns (unless you cross breed them with other colubrids) but awesome patterns.

Hey /an/, for reasons Ive got to keep my snake in a box for a bit at a friend's place. Id rather not be a bother and ask them to turn up the thermostat to the 75 degrees or so my baby would be most comfortable at, so I was considering throwing a few of those magnesium-based hothands things in there with him. Ive heard that on long trips they can suck out all the oxygen and suffocate a snake, but Id really just be giving him one to sit on in a well ventilated shoebox with a towel thrown in it.

What does /an/ think of this plan? Am I a fool or a visionary!?!?

Buy heat pad for humans with temperature adjust from pharmacy. Set it on low, stick it under 1/3 of the box. Done.

No heat packs. Those hot hands things get way too hot. When shipping reptiles, there is a different style of heat pack you use that is designed to produce low heat and last 12-24 hours. Usually they are hard to find locally and must be ordered online.

And don't use a cardboard box. Recommend you go to camping or hardware store and purchase a styrofoam cooler (the cheap kind). Line the inside of cooler with newpaper. Drill some air holes. Tape the lid down SOLID. And I mean tape all around the edge. Do not underestimate snek ability to get out of boxes.

If you get a pure or high-content super dwarf, they only max out at 8', and 6'-7' seems to be more common. SDs are becoming more and more common, so the prices have dropped a lot. Just be sure to ask about the parents' sizes and percentages to be sure you've got a pure/high-content.

As long as temps aren't below 70F, you don't have to worry too awfully much about heat. It's not preferable at all, so if possible bring it up to 75F, but I doubt 12 hours at 70F will hurt it. Just be sure to warm it up slowly before putting it back in its regular enclosure.

As far as pacman frogs go, is C. ornata or C. cranwelli more common in the pet trade? They damn near look the same and I don't know which kind mine is (not that it really matters, I'm just curious).

Also frogs are seriously the best amphibians to own. There are so many different kinds that behave and look so uniquely, and there are usually a lot of different looking individuals within each type. I'm in love

They only do that when they're really excited about something. Usually young geckos do it more than adults. Most common time to see the tail waggle is when a male is getting ready to mate, then the tail wiggles so fast it looks like it's vibrating.

Hey /an/, guy who bought a sailfin dragon last year posting again.

If any of you remember, I bought this girl last year from some guy trying to get rid of her, and then came to find out she was extremely wild (to the point where I suspect she was wild caught, especially because he said he got her from backwaterreptiles). I was advised by /an/ to do the normal taming thing of giving her space, let her see me putting food into her enclosure, etc. It's been well over a year now and the only improvement I've seen is that she'll readily go to her food dish a little bit after I put food into it, though I think she only does it because I'm sitting at my computer and being pretty stationary.

She still flips out if I get too close to her, if she's eating and I move just a bit, such as turning around to watch her, she'll dart back up to her "safe zone".

I'm guessing there's just really nothing I can do for her besides just giving her a calm and stress-free environment?

I want to get a red tail boa but im not sure how to handle a snake that could possibly get bigger than me. Any tips on handling and care? I've owned corns and ball pythons in the past so i have experience.

I started with corns aswell, then got a full grown constrictor from a friend, she's around 2.6m now, and ridiculously easy to handle. She's got some weight to her, and I gotta watch out not to drop her if I have her around my shoulders or neck, because she's kinda clumsy at time and doesn't really hold on to me well. Also, you don't really notice the length that much, rolled up she's kinda the size of a cat/small dog.
And my boa is also super friendly, but I have no idea if that's the usual thing, though I personally have not heard of people with really angry boas.

That's where viewing the parents and asking for percentages come in. If you get a pure super dwarf, they shouldn't exceed 9', however you feed them. And even an 11' retic doesn't seem all that big. My retic is 4.5' but looks 3', and a 9' retic looks 6' until you stretch it out.

UVB isn't necessary, but it won't hurt them either. Snakes can actually see UVB, so providing UVB can enrich them since they are able to see everything the way they'd normally be able to see. Kinda like giving glasses to something with bad eyesight.

Not true. Many start out docile. They can be kinda nippy as babies, but that's true for any other species. My first BRB didn't need to be "tamed," my second one liked to put on a show but she was all bark and no bite, and the majority of people I see are always like "I'd heard about how nippy they are, so I'm surprised mine is so docile!" There are probably plenty of nippy babies, but they don't deserve the reputation of being inherently nippy, as babies or otherwise. I won't be getting my other two until spring, but I doubt they'll be all that defensive either.

How good would a crestie do in a planted vivarium? I guess it would be more like two plants in a dirt substrate and some other fake decorations, like suction cup wall vines. I have two plants that I bought and I need to find a way to increase the regular humidity of my baby gecko's bin. It would also be a relief to not have to worry so much about the pooping.

Planted tanks work well for them. Check Google for 'gecko safe plants' to make sure your plants aren't toxic to them. Make a drainage layer of bio balls or clean large aquarium gravel, put vinyl screen on top, then substrate on that. Stick in plants. Put daytime light on a timer for 12 hours on so the plants don't die. Optionally add a culture of springtails. If done right, pretty much the only thing you need to clean from then on is food bowls, decor, and the glass walls.

It just has to be something that has some airflow and doesn't absorb water. For aquarium gravel the kind to use is the large pebble variety so there is some gaps for air to move between. The whole point is to prevent the roots of your plants from being waterlogged.

Depending on the species, it may have been better to not use one at all until came in.

It's possible the surface had a lower threshold than the tub, and it didn't even burn the wood, just the chemicals on top. I'm not sure. Most tubs have a very high temperature threshold before they begin to warp/melt. The lids seem to be less resistant, though.

So I got home from work to see my leopard gecko relaxing on his basking spot. This was a great time to get him to eat for the first time in 4 weeks.

So I drop a superworm in there, he notices it and is about to go for it. Suddenly outside my door my family starts screaming about how theres pizza here. They successfully scared the shit out of my leopard gecko.

His hunger strike continues because of my family. Just great.

god fucking dammit /an/ im so stressed trying to find out about snake care. For the last few days i've been trying to understand proper heating for snakes and its so fucking hard to follow along. I had a leopard gecko and a bearded dragon growing up so i have experience with reptiles but i can't fucking remember shit about caring for them and it seems like i did it wrong. What i did was i would have two 12 hour cycles, day time with the basking light, night time with the heat pad both of these placed on the same side. But when im reading snakes it seems like i need both a red bulb and heat pad at the same time on a thermostat and at night just use the heat pad also on thermostat but i have no idea how to run the probe to not show the wire on the side of the tank or even if i should put it inside the tanks bottom, and how i can avoid the snake hurting himself on it. Not to mention i should use a pvc cage for a ball python to keep humidity up but these fucking pvc cages, i have no idea where i can put a fucking heat bulb or pad BEAUSE THESE MANUFACTURES DONT SHOW PICTURES OR INCLUDED DESCRIPTIONS. So in the end here is what I want to do, it might not be the "best" or "perfect" way but it makes the most sense

Ball Python enclosures

20 gallon glass tank
heat pad that covers one third of the tank on one end and the heat lamp on the same end
UVB fluorescent for extra lighting
aspen bedding
plenty of nice hides for a small guy in a large tank
good size dog water dish on cool end
Test out some bulbs to figure out how to get a 90 basking spot
set a timer for light on 12 hour cycle and heat pad on 12 hour cycle
buy a mister and spray in the morning and when i get home along with refill water dish to get 70% humidity.

Make adjustments for different breeds of snakes but follow the same general rules

am i going to kill my snake in a month doing it this way.

I'd advise heat tape for PVC, heat pads aren't always strong enough to heat through the plastic. Also, the heat pads aren't big enough. Heat tape is cheaper, more reliable, and heats stronger.

Probe goes outside the enclosure, in between the heat tape and the bottom of the enclosure. That's why there's probe shapes cut out on the bottom of the cage. At least, Animal Plastics does this.

20 gallons is not big enough fro an adult ball python, would be ok for a baby, but once they hit a year they'll be way too big.

I'd advise a CHE over a heat bulb that produces light.

UVB isn't necessary for snakes, they get all of their nutrients from their food. UVB is good for enrichment, but isn't necessary for health.

Any bedding that holds humidity. If you're using a tank, aspen will not be good enough to provide proper humidity.

You need a thermostat for all heating elements, bulbs or otherwise. If a bulb is strictly for providing light and no heat, it should be on a timer for 12 hours.

No need for misters with the proper set up, and a mister system cannot compare to properly-provided humidity. Misters provide wetness, not humidity.

tip i have found for saving a little time in exchange for a little bit of extra money with DIY is to buy a kitchen cabinet section. those come in good terrarium sizes, like 36 wide x 24 deep. Then all you need to do is change out the back panel for wood and install glass/acrylic on the front.

Had my guy since August in a planted viv, he's pretty content from what I can see the only none bio thing in there is the arboreal food tray, the thermometer and hygrometer.

When I get more reptiles I'll be doing what I did with Gus and making sure they have as close to a natural habitat as possible.

Not that anon, but you do realize boa constrictors have a more varied diet in the wild than the european lab rats we give them in captivity right? The whole "only give them rats" thing is something we humans imposed on these animals out of convenience more than anything - they're even known to eat Ocelots back where they're from.

I want to make sure and change my previous question a bit.

With enough hides will a baby Mexican Black King Snake be ok in a 4.5ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft viv?

Will the heat pad (2ft heat pad) be too large for the young snake and kinda burn it out or should i just set a lower temp?

General rules of thumb for snek tank is 1 sq ft per 1 foot of snek. 1/3 to 1/2 of tank heated. Hides on the hot side and cold side. It's preferred that the hides are similar so the snake doesn't have to decide on a favorite.

Make sure you have a lot of decor and hide spots throughout the cage. That's an awesome sized cage for an adult sized snake of that species, but for a baby it might be a little bit too big. Make sure it won't feel exposed and insecure due to any "dead space".

I never insinuated one way or another what they reportedly eat in the wild is a negative thing. I still don't know what exactly you're telling me in your latter point, but the point is these animals have evolved to eat what they seem fit. They're more generalists than specialists; they eat small to medium mammals and other reptiles and do not stick to eating rats. For you to be thinking eating one guinea pig is too much for them is absurd in my opinion. By no means am I advocating guinea pigs as part of a regular diet since they are very high in fat, but certainly for an animal that can take down an ocelot, small deer and porcupines, I don't see it as absolutely detrimental as you think.

Aspen is fine. The only thing to watch out for is they're quick to mold if it gets wet and there isn't enough ventilation. I don't know what your cage looks like and how much airflow it has, so keep that in mind come shedding time and you're spraying down the cage.

IF your snake seems stressed and refuses to feed, feel free to get a much smaller plastic bin for it as a temporary solution. It's boring and sterile looking, but it will help in settling down your new snake. MBKs are hardy and it should be fine, I think. I've kept hatchling indigo snakes in 4x2x2 before without a problem with coconut fiber mixed with sand and cork barks for hides.

These snakes have evolved in a certain way over the years and integral functions such as digestive systems do not dissipate that easily, over the mere decades of being in captivity. I truly think it's a matter of convenience for us people to feed them what's being industrialized at a large scale as "snake food". Put your hand in the tank every day or every other day for fiften minutes and let snake smell you. After a while snake will come out and investigate. Then maybe will try to climb your arm. It takes a little while to regain a snake's trust after previous bad experiences but it can be done. Basically you're just trying to communicate to the snake that you are not aggressive and will not try to eat or hurt it.

Tanks that are both water and land I have always found to be beutiful. I really wish I could find a tank design that comes with a drain on bottom that I could open up to drain the liquid and then put water in some tube that goes right back into the tank without disturbing the layout too much. Hell a tank like that for aquariums would be great also for water changes.

It's a pink nerve plant, looks pretty cool but it grows like crazy for some reason so I'm forever pruning it haha.
As with any animal I've had I like to keep everything as natural as possible so I'd say get some grapevine and cork bark hollows (Crested Geckos love the fuck out of cork bark).

you're incorrect. boa constrictors, as i mentioned are food generalists, meaning they do not have specific diet and will eat what they can capture. they eat small to medium mammals, birds, bats, and reptiles. you're also incorrect in assuming birds have little to no fat. it depends on the species of the birds, but for example please feel free to refer to the Day Old Chicken crude fat % vs. mice and rats. you're thinking of lean chicken breasts, but in actuality birds can be quite fatty as well. are you thinking boa constrictors will say "oh that species of bird is too high in fat, so i can't eat that"?.

Still can't get my female boa to try rats. I tried dipping them in boiling water, braining them, etc. Nothing works for her. I'm going to try getting some mouse droppings and used litter and rolling the rat in it, but if that doesn't work, what do?

The male has now outpaced the female by a whopping 50 grams even though the female was 30g heavier than him when i got her simply because she doesn't eat as reliably.

Ok all autism aside. I live in a ~120 year old home so, naturally it's 40 degrees outside and maybe low 60s inside. My albino King's (which is peppered through the threads) tank was highs of 64 and lows of 62 today... Should I be concerned? It's too young to be breeding so I think cooling Isn't a concern, but this is the first time I haven't been able to keep up the because of the rapid temperature drop in my area.

kek. i apologize for my elongated responses as seen above. it would be normal for your Florida kingsnake to dip into 60s during winter for breeding purposes. Many breeders will do this on purpose when they are of course to incite such behaviors. If it stay there consistently, it will go into a brumation/hibernation stage where it will slow down its activity including food consumption to completely ceasing all activities. I wouldn't worry too much.

Today I checked my crested geckos food bowl to change it and it was almost entirely empty. I made more than i usually would by accident too. He ate it all in the timeframe he'd barely scratch the zoo med stuff.

Is this good, or should I offer less food? Is there a risk of a juvenile crested gecko getting obese from being offered too much food? I make sure he exercises every day when I handle him.

Hello Once Again,

I am currently nearing checkout for the Mexican Black KSnake habitat and I have an issue with the bedding.
Aspen is kinda ugly and I don't think it will look to great. I know that MBK's are from the Sonora desert and a desert-esque habitat would be nice. I have also read that sand is not a good thing for snakes?

Now Zoo-Med seem to do a nice repti-sand and they seem to be a good brand. Would it be ok for my MBK to have a zoo-med repti-sand bedding?

I just did a 1 inch layer of fir bark chips + 1 1/2 inches of aspen shavings and my BP is loving it; never seen a snake burrow so hard in their lives.

As the substrate thing is kind of Aspen only for now I have a question about heating.

Is heat tape the same as heat cables?

As it is a large viv it would prob have to be a mat but with mats do they give any heat downwards or is it only upwards.

If i were to go with a mat i think I would put it sandwiched between some sort of cork or insulation sheets inside the bottom of the viv.

Does that sound about right.
Literally been spending an hour going through all sorts of heating options in circles :D

Any opinions on using a waterfall feature as a source of water as opposed to a bowl?

Assuming it wont spill over into the substrate?

kek. Males generally are more outgoing than females I have noticed. There are some exceptions but that's the usual tendency. My two pictus girls are split one on each side of the spectrum; one is out pretty much always, doesn't even bother using a hide to sleep; the other i see like once a month. My male crestie is crepuscular for some reason, gets up at 4pm everyday and back to sleep by 7pm. The two crestie girls are more of what i'd call conventional crestie braveness and behaviour. The garg is... well, she's a garg, meaning she's weird. Weird sleeping positions and hours, sometimes doesn't eat for two weeks then pigs out for two weeks, sometimes wide awake during the day, sometimes hides forever.

Sure. Cheapest/easiest way is bamboo stakes from garden center. Tie a couple together. You can also use branches from outside but you need to bake those to sterilize them first.

Scrub it down with 50/50 vinegar water solution, rinse, bake at about 200F for two hours. Rinse again, let dry, then you should be good.

I just got a Bearded dragon through the local version of Craigslist.
Its adult sized
I got it along with a 1.2 meter by 45cm terrarium with all the illumination and heating.
I got him for free as the person no longer had time to care for it.
The animal is slightly stressed with new home as is usual but after i leave it alone he keeps shuffling around and hitting the terrarium walls/doors and bobbing its head

Should i just give the animal time?
How can i know its name?

Just took a look at safe woods for vivs and it appears crepe myrtle is safe, yep. I cannot imagine how the wood in your house could negatively affect your snek. The woods you need to avoid for in-tank use are cedar, pine, anything with thorns, anything that leaks sap, and anything that has been soaked in pesticides.

I just cut branches off of trees. Make sure it's live wood and let it dry out, a live branch will last longer than a dead one on the ground.

I don't treat it for anything, I just let it dry out for a few weeks. Not like anything in the wood will harm my animals anyway.

Just stay away from cedar, pine, and any tree/bush that has poisonous bark.

They do snake stuff. Curl up in hides, crawl around, etc. But judging by "Cobra Mafia" and the fact it's NatGeo, the people who own those cobras probably just stuff them in crates where they can't crawl around.

After a month of baths, religious rack cleaning and some TLC, she's looking so much better.

Poor girl was clearly neglected, though. It's taken me a while just to be able to pick her up without being nipped.

something kinda cool my mom told me tonight. I knew she had a iguana before I was born and a little after (she gave it to the Audubon Aquarium which is a top 10 aquarium in the nation). She told me how she used to feed it all kinds of food and loved it to death. Said it was just like a dog, she allowed it to free roam her apartment in the frenchquarter. She said it would bask, hide, etc. She brought it everywhere. She said a special treat she would do was feed it haagen-dazs strawberry ice-cream. I just thought it was kinda funny. The iguana's name was bunny, my mom got her in the 80s and she lived till the early 2000's. Very few medical issues, 1 surgery which was to removed her eggs from her (some sort of health issue because she never mated).

which is why she really likes my snake, is because she had a reptile when she was in her late teens-early 20s

All of these are bad choices, hopefully your mom doesn't do any of this anymore.

Some people will argue with me on the free-roaming with big lizards, but unfortunately it's really bad for their healthy. Especially for tropical lizards, because try as you may you cannot provide enough humidity or heat for a free-roaming reptile, even with "basking spots" or "humid boxes" laying around. And a tegu owner I saw on a forum found out the hard way when she took her tegu to the vet to get some x-rays and found out it had severe dehydration and minor MBD despite appearing outwardly healthy. Almost lost her lizard.

It's best to leave reptiles in their cages, and bring them outside for interaction every once in awhile.

I live in NC, and my average household humidity is 50-60%, but my ball python would still become dehydrated if I didn't provide him extra humidity even though it's technically "within acceptable parameters." I know this because when I was 12 and stupid I provided him with virtually no heat and absolutely no extra humidity (seriously, 12 year olds have no business being the sole caretaker of an animal). The only source of heat he had was a red heat lamp stuck to the top of a wooden box inside his enclosure, he'd have to go inside it to stay warm. Despite my house being 50-60% humidity and him not having a heat source sucking all that away, he still shed in pieces for 5 years until I got older and smarter and realized how stupid it all was.

Is it usual for crested geckos to shed, like, overnight? My lil babby was looking dull gray last night, and when I opened the enclosure lid today, he was popping with color, no signs of leftover shed (I put the humidity up to like 90%. When I bought him from the store, he had a bunch of stuck pieces of shed on his eyelashes and back).

And also, how to get the lil guy to eat crickets? Should I put him in a different enclosure to eat them? I doubt he'd get any if I put them in his cage, he spends all his time at the very top.
