One of the oldest confirmed dogs, a Border Collie named Bramble, lived to 27 years on a vegan diet.

Animal abuse desu

Vegan diets are doable for dogs. Not as good as a non vegan one though, but they can live.
Still is a stupid idea though. If you're vegan and want a pet get a rabbit or horse or goat or whatever instead of being stupid.
>>
Vegetarian diets can be very useful to dogs with multiple food allergies. Dogs can get all needed nutrition from them. I still wouldn't do it unless I had to, my dog does fine on her meaty kibble.

A vegan diet would be risky. You can buy vegan kibble, but none of the brands have done feeding trials and its not guaranteed to have all the stuff a dog needs to thrive.

If this dog could live so long vegan, why are there still people arguing that it's bad?
>>
>>2024351
Because a diet isn't the sole defining factor on how long you live. There are people setting age records who probably eat shitty, or at least could be better.

Anyone/thing can live an average lifespan eating shitty but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Not being dead =/= living

this guy is 126 and smokes a pack of cigarettes a day.

>Not being dead =/= living
um, that's exactly what it means.
>>
>>2024352
I have a family member who's been smoking for 93 years. She's 102.

A good share of how long you live just comes down to luck.
>>
>>2024357
Human DNA only has eight telomeres, and they drop off at a rate of about one every thirteen years. The longest a person can live should be closer to 104.

Those of us who've gone through telomerasis more than once can tell you each time your DNA changes, so do you. Hair in new and interesting places, changes in interests, metabolism and mental state. 26 isn't any more fun than 13, either, and I'm not looking forward to 39!

two months before my 40th birthday I started having a slow stroke associated with extremely high blood pressure.

a slow bleed, a subarachnoid hemorrhage. It was accompanied by bursting of my blood vessels in my brain and eyes. I went blind in my right eye and started to lose vision in my left.

after getting that fixed up my doc noticed I was suffering from kidney failure from prolonged hypertension. I will never regain sight in the center of my right eye or the blind spot in my left. It's just a matter of time before I need a new kidney. Also my dick doesn't work without Viagra now.

that was years ago, I'm fine with it.

beware the number 40 though.
>>
>>2024366
Damn, that sucks.

I bet you come from a long line of early breeders...
>>
>>2024374
nah, my dad was 24 when I was born and I was 24 when my first was born.

when I went in for tests everyone at the clinic and hospital asked my age. When I said 40 they were all like, "yeah, that's when everything starts to fall apart."

I guess my experience isn't at all unique.
>>
>>2024380
24 still seems pretty young to me, though. I'm thirty and haven't even considered kids yet.
>>
>>2024383
sure, but back when my dad was a kid people were having kids at 16 usually.

if you're a man you're probably fine, but if a woman you need to get busy if that's what you want. 40 is about the limit for women.
>>
>>2024157
>27 years
Bullshit. Never happened. Your bait is weak, just like your vegan immune system. No fucking dog has ever lived 27 years.
>>
>>2024380
I'm lucky that the men in my family line don't really start to decline until their late 60s, so I'm good.

the oldest dog was 29, almost 30.

my own dog is 16 and still as fit as ever, she's probably going to make it into the twenties as well.

>my own dog is 16... she's probably going to make it into the twenties as well.
it's really sad that you think that.
>>
>>2024363
Its genetics mostly, some people are born doomed and others are born to never give a fuck. I had an uncle who died recently, something in his brain he had since he was born and it just exploded sometime in his 50s. Nothing could be done.

This dog is probably just a freak of nature, nothing to do with it's diet.
>>
>>2024526
Let him think it. Old age is cruel, one day they are fine and litterly the next they get sick and die soon after.
Being old is like waiting for that gust of wind to take you out, I have met friends of my grandmother who seemed fine and then next week I hear they have died.

I have a 16 year old cat, everyday I am dreading that gust of wind but so far a broken jaw, broken leg and getting that leg amputated has not finished her off yet.
>>
>>2024387
>I disagree with what this information could imply, so it's bait.
It only takes five fucking seconds to google it. That's why I specifically included his name and breed.
>>
The story is real, for those of you doubting. You can very easily look it up.
The part that everyone seems to neglect mentioning is that Bramble didn't eat kibble. She ate a home cooked vegan meal every single day, and was well exercised. Idiot vegans like to use her as a way to justify buying vegan dog kibble (which is all crap) or they compare her to dogs being fed Pedigree. Find someone who takes the time and effort to work out and cook a diet for a dog that includes meat the way that Heritage did and then draw comparisons.
Like other people said, though, it's more likely that Bramble was just a freak and her diet was only one factor for her longevity.
>>
I'm mostly vegan. I don't object to eating animal products, I just think factory farming is cruel as fuck and animals should be treated well, not stuffed in cages, etc.

I feed my dog kibble with meat in it because it's healthier. Even though dogs are omnivores I just don't think it would be fair to make her be vegan.
>>
>>2024670
A lot of vegetarians and vegans say that, that their biggest concerns revolve around the treatment of animals on factory farms. What are your thoughts on hunting wild animals that have had a chance to live a long, natural and happy life? What about home farming (assuming we don't get too attached)?
>>
>>2024363
Churchill credited smoking for his longevity
>>
>>2024727
Hunting doesn't bother me at all.

Home farming is awesome, I plan on having a homestead with chickens, meat rabbits, and goats.
>>
>>2024669
Good exercise, home cooked meals, and being a border collie - all of those things are factors in a dog living a long life. But dogs are definitely more capable of being vegan than cats. People who feed cats vegan diets are awful.
>>
>>2024179
>>2024345
Pretty much this, dogs can do it, but I wouldn't suggest it as a good idea unless there's a real medical reason to. Too risky otherwise, you have to be very careful about how you feed them. Plenty of people who are vegans don't know how to put together a correct diet for themselves, let alone an animal that generally eats a lot more meat anyway. Its vegan cats I flip my shit over.
>>
>>2024735
Probably because dogs are actually domesticated, plus wolves eat berries and stuff in the wild all the time. Cats can't even eat kibbles properly.
>>
>>2024157
My border collie black lab passed away this last year. She was 19 years old and ate basic eukanuba dry food we got at a dollar general.
>>
>>2024755
>border collie black lab

Mutt. Just say mutt.
>>
>>2024772
It is sortof relevant because border collies are a very healthy breed. It'd be different if it was a Great Dane that lived 19 years off of poor person shit food.
>>
I'm a vegan, and in all honesty, if I knew my dog would thrive and be happy on a vegan diet, I would do it

that being said, it's way too risky for me to try doing it. stories like this are good in that it's a sign this (dogs on vegan diets) is something worth studying and learning more about, but is not enough for me to decide that I should put my dog, a being that cannot directly communicate to me what he wants/is feeling and completely relies on me, on a diet unnatural to him. I feed him orijin, got him from a shelter that was going to euthanize him, and he's fixed. I don't feel any "vegan guilt" from having him

and in all honesty, its HUMANS eating animal products the way they do is what causes so many issues. plus, a human can say "wow, this diet is making me feel shitty. I'm going to stop." a dog cannot

I don't think this story is enough to say a vegan diet is "better" for dogs, but it's definitely something that should be looked into more

your organs don't magically give in and kill you within a day, unless it's your vital vitals.

my dog is checked relatively often.
>>
I wouldn't feed a vegan diet unless it went through a feeding trial and passed. Even then I'd be concerned. Meat is way more digestible than plant matter.

My cat is 15 and I can't even see her being dead in the near future. She's as healthy as a kitten.
>>
>>2026592
This.
Meat us actually super-easy to digest. That's why even herbivores will sometimes snack on small animals when they need a quick protien fix.
Deer will actually chase down and eat birds, sometimes. It's kinda freaky.

You're right. Like when you feed a person bark for 10 years and the are still alive by chance but are extremely malnourished and have multiple health issues because they have been eating bark, which is not a recommended sustaining dietary food. They are alive. But suffering.
>>
>>2024157
The main reason many are against feeding vegan to a dog because most people would do it terribly.
Such as feeding dogs rice and potatoes.
>>
>>2024157
So if this dog is perfectly healthy on a vegan diet, why shouldn't dogs be fed this if it can be done correctly? Even most non-vegan dog food brands are awful and full of corn and potatoes. Prove vegan diets are unhealthy instead of just making excuses.
>>
Why would you want your dog on a vegan diet ? Let animals be fuckin animals and let him eat meat.
>>
>>2027197
And by meat, you mean processed dog kibble that's 50% meat byproduct and 50% corn and potatoes. How healthy and natural.
