Posting shrimp party.

Can I keep some Red Cherry shrimp with an angelfish. From the web it seems they grow just big enough that he won't eat the adults, but I'm thinking it might still be a dangerous idea?
What I was thinking was basically putting in some java moss for them to hide in, and then letting them breed up a solid population, where the excess young shrimp could provide a natural diet for the angel.

I've tried to keep angelfish with amano shrimp, it didn't work at all.

Considering that RCS are even smaller, I'd guess it won't work.

So my new (about two weeks) vampire shrimp seems to have vanished overnight. Yesterday he was sitting behind the filter, but today I can't find him anywhere in the tank, and he isn't at the filter either. Do these things burrow or something? I did do a cursory look around the tank to see if maybe he had escaped, but there are no signs of the little guy.

If it's your first tank, you should go for something simple. Livebearers like platies, mollies or swordtails are always a solid choice, but if you want something a bit more visually exciting there are always cardinal tetras, neon tetras, zebra danios for simple schooling fish. If you want something spectacular but more solitary, you could get one school of small fish as well as a gourami. Bettas are very nice as long as you only keep a single betta and don't get any other "betta-like" fish.

Yes, and they can stay underground for quite a lot.
It's normal for them to disappear from time to time, just give it a couple of days.

About 1996 I gave up on salt water because I was tired of killing fish. I'm not even sure if I had the internet. Recently someone gave me a 9 gallon nanocube. (its actually a knockoff from china). I was wondering if I drilled out the bottom added about 30 more gallons of water/filtration underneath. How much maintenance would be involved in trying to keep some corals and very small fish. I have a koi pond that is my main priority. Even though I have maintence down it still takes a few hours a week and uses a lot of water. Had tanks for 25 years but out of the loop on salt technology. Maintenance needs to be minimal. If its not possilbe I'll just donate the tank.

I actually got one of my younger siblings a 20 gallon and am completely setting it up for him. I put in 6 white clouds, 4 platies, 3 oto cats and 5 bee shrimp (wanted RCS, but nobody had them locally). They're easy to care for fish, and teh tank is moderately to heavily planted so it should withstand the inevitable overfeeding and lack of water changes that comes with children and fish tanks.

My apple snail is Batman.

She likes to climb as high as possible then glide down like batman and will try to eat any fish that fall asleep. She literally divebombs fish. I have watched my fish be startled and swim off or kick free if she actually managed to grab ahold of them. She drowned a juvenile male corycat and ate him. Beware of BatSnail.

My remaining nerite does something a bit different. He'll climb out of the tank and sit on the glass lid in the air for about an hour, then he'll simply retreat into his shell and drop back down into the tank. I wake up to sudden splashes from him doing this sometimes.

Its funny, I lost my female nerite, she was kind in the way she dotted up my wood with eggs and not any glass, than she somehow found her way out of the tank, up over the HOB and died. Yeah, my tank used to be lidless until one of my amanos climbed out and died on the floor. Went to a glasscutter and got a cheap lid made, it's worked pretty well. One corner cut off to make room for the filter and heater wires, the other corner cut off to make room for tossing food flakes in. Hey. When you guys do water changes do you siphon the gravel? Is it good to just leave all the poop and gunk down there for a planted tank

Also when you guys were just starting out, how often did your fish die? I've had my tank for a year and I've had a fish die every few months

And have you guys ever bought plants off amazon? Were they good I wanna get a carpet off there

Also I have 2 albino corys left should I get them more friends or should I let them die and get a bunch of khulis

If you don't want the corys post a free ad for someone to pick them up. I have had my tank for less than a year and only have had 2 guppies and 2 Raphael catfish die. Siphon as much shit and old food as possible. Dig down into the gravel as well. My planted tank has been fine that way.

Also, they're not regular ghost shrimp, they're the closest thing we have here in Britain, Tenuipedium palaemonoides. Apparently they're mainly herbivores. Some even say they're better algae cleaners than amanos.

Danios are usually not recommended with gouramis since they are active surface dwellers. Some gouramis might get annoyed or stressed and become more withdrawn. On top of that, your schooling size for them is way too small.

idk anything about hairy tiger plecos, but it looks like he's already your bottom feeder. Maybe remove the danios and just do a school of cory cats or kuhli loaches and the lone gourami can keep the middle/top of the tank by itself?

Told her they wouldn't survive more than a week, and she said 'it's okay, it's for the kids, just give me the fish'. Did a 40% water change yesterday but stupidly forgot to do a test and there is a huge amount of Cl levels already lost at least one fish any thing else besides adding more water conditioner to the tank water.

I've done tests on fresh tap water and the levels are really high still so changing the water again doesn't seem like it would help.

I always use a dechlorinator it just doesn't seem to be working any more. I've never had this problem before, its weird. But I have put some water in a bucket with dechlorinator and left it overnight.

Literally the only thing I can think has happened is the dechlorinator/ water conditioner isn't working or the water has an unusually high level of chlorine.

question for shrimp keepers. will they help cull the fry from live bearing fish? and will red cherries not just die randomly like ghosts.

Rcs are much more docile and easy going. They're also easier to breed and breed often.

What would happen for example if I bred a red betta fish with a blue betta fish? Would the fry be a mix of both? Does it depend on the grandparents? Could I potentially get a purple one? Sorry for sounding like an ignorant moron but I'm completely new to breeding.

I have need some info /aq/

How easy is it to turn a tropical freshwater tank into a saltwater one? And how much does it cost?

My tank currently: 54 liters, (60x30x30cm), got an inside filter (160L Eheim), and a heater. Also a hood with lighting included. If I were to make this change, can I still use my old equipment, ie: the filter, heater etc? Or do saltwater tanks require specialized stuff?

One of my neighbors was like that. I went over to set up their wireless router, and the wife had a just gotten a betta and had him in a tiny vase with a plant. She is the neighborhood 'animal lover', can't kill a fly, so it floored me when she was trying to explain how bettas only eat plant roots. Thankfully I had my phone on me, and pulled up info explaining how it was a myth and showed her proper betta diets. Depends on what you want? Can be as simple as adding salt, to really complicated.
If you want to stick with what you have, your options are pretty limited. Remember, all your filter media has to re-cycle too. You can get by with just buying a hydrometer and salt mix at this point.

Fish only is cheapest, but your tank is too small for most of them.
Buying/finding some dead rock, a bit of seed, and patience is cheap too.
Your filter kinda sucks for sand, but if you already have gravel, mixing in a bit of crushed shell can look nice.
What sort of lighting do you have? Might be able to keep some mushrooms.
Depending on your handiness, can buy some suitable LEDs for them for about $30 to $150.

Anyway, mushrooms or other hardy "low light" soft corals can be kept without specialized equipment.
They average about $0.50 to $2 a polyp.
I forgot how much a bag of salt mix is.
Hydrometers vary in quality and price, but usually $5-20. I like using a refractometer instead, but the cheapest of those is about $40.
Some nerites and or cerith snails can run from 20cents to a couple dollars each. Dwarf hermits are pretty cool and are roughly the same price to a couple dollars more. Grass shrimp are cheap (used to be 20 for a dollar) and pretty cute. Lots of small fish out there.

Anyway, the only piece of equipment you absolutely NEED is some way to measure your salinity (a hydrometer, refractometer, probe, etc.). Everything else can be worked around according to the exact livestock you wish to keep since some species have stricter needs than others.

So, I have a shitton of baby lettuce nudibranchs EVERYWHERE.
They average about 5mm, is that big enough to trade for something or should I wait until they get larger? I have plenty of algae right now, but I don't think all the nutrients and lighting in the world is going to allow a 55gal to support 100+ slugs long term...

I have an old as fuck mini penguin bio wheel and when I finally broke it out again today it doesn't work. The impeller spins and seems to kick up water but it's missing one of its 6 fins. It doesn't seem to be able to attain any sort of suction however. Any suggestions on how to fix this or is it fucked? Keep in mind I may have just assembled it like a retard

you can usually find replacement impeller assemblies from the manufacturer. Check the impeller rod and end caps/bearings as well though. If the holes the rod goes in are broken or worn the thing is trash.

you also need to be sure there aren't any big air bubbles trapped in the impeller housing. It has to be full of water.

I guess another thing to check is make sure the impeller isn't spinning independently of the magnet. They need to be joined together. They can't spin separately.

Well, the basic starter fish are things like guppies, neon tetras, and zebra danios. Those would do fine in a 15 gallon tank (assuming only male guppies), but can be pretty boring.


Look into the smaller corydoras catfish (c. pygmaeus - my personal favorite, c. habrosus, or c. hastatus), rasboras of all kinds, scarlet badis, or sparkling gouramis. Those options are a little less common, but still common enough to be available in the trade.

Where you can really have fun is the aquascape and plants. Find some good driftwood and a good source of plants like cryptocoryne, java fern, anubias, mosses, water sprite, pygmy sword, and amazon swords.

Could I add any more fish? I would love some duboisi but I think you need a decent amount of them like demasoni and I'm not sure if 6 more fish (for a total of 15) is too much for a 140l, even though denasonis and duboisi a are rather small. Thought?

Is there anything you can do to encourage RCS breeding?
Mine have bred once in the first month since getting them. But never since and I've had them around 8 months now.

The older females that gave birth to the last litter aren't even becoming saddled again. The only saddled females in the tank are the new shrimp that the older females gave birth to, but they never seem to become berried.

My water is at 22c and I do weekly water changes. The tank has nothing else but RCS in it and it's covered in Moss.

Should I try feeding them more? I usually drop in an algae wafer every 4 days. But I've now started dropping fish flakes in daily as maybe they need more protein.

You should definitely feed them more. People have this idea that RCS will survive on biofilm alone, which is true, but they won't reproduce with that kind of diet. Feed them a varied diet and you'll have a booming population in no time.

They got their fish from asian farms and while we didn't ship out any dead fish, there were almost always obviously sick specimens in the same batch. We always had complete DOAs out of that farm too. Hard to say if it's stress related or pathogen related, but I can confidently say, in my region, it was not high quality at all. I quit in fear of my own collection at home.

Since I got to see the industrialized side of things, I always prefer to buy tank bred by fellow hobbyists, if I can.

What would you stock in a 30 gallon tank? I am about to move to a 100 gallon and already have a 20 long set up with guppies and faggot neon tetras. Oscars are about to go into the 100 gallon along with a jack Dempsey. 30 will only have a hillstream loach in it so I was thinking some neat catfish and some colorful active schooling fish.

hey /aq/ I'm setting up a 5.5g rcs tank & I got this gravel in black, would I be able to do a dwarf baby tears carpet with it or do I need the fancy mineral substrate?

I just have regular old gravel in my other tank & use florish and the plants (not carpet ones) are super healthy

Also, would putting fish food and plants/rocks from my established tank into my new tank help cycle it

They're fun to watch especially if you have corys or any catfish. He protects his food areas by gliding over them and landing on top of them. They're really neat and only get 2-3 inches. Love rocks and really love swimming in current. Pretty easy to care for as well. My favorite part is you can watch there heart beat.

I give up on trying to find regular household ammonia. On the rare occurrence that I could find it, it was fancy yellow-dyed lemon-scented crap. This tank isn't even going to have fish at first- I'm doing an experiment with triops. So even if I were to do a fish-in cycle, which I don't want to do, what am I going to do with the fish?

What do I do? I heard throwing in fish food is unreliable and easy to screw up.

I was gonna say use water from one of those tanks. You could always buy a feeder gold fish and let it cycle them get rid of the fish. I've raised triops before. Add water let it run through the filter for a a day or two so the chlorine is gone and add them. First starting with fish I never cycled the tanks and none have ever died. Only recently have I done cycling since I'm more into the hobby now.

I've always added water from my first ever tank. But there's these capsule things that add beneficial bacteria to your tank and cycles it quicker. A lot better than some of the cycling stuff from tetra or api. Never tried liquid ammonia. Or like one anon said could always ask the lfs for a little bag of water.

Triops are very hardy. I remember getting the kits as a kid and raising them in sink water.

The local fish store sells them for 10 a piece. Seems kinda high but they're neat. They would do fine in a 10g tank till you could eventually upgrade. Mine was only in a 20 gallon for almost a year.

My beta sorority is dropping like flies. My water is fine, the tank is heated with overfiltering, there's 20 gallons of space with hiding areas and I clean the tank every week. It's not something I'm doing wrong. The fact is that the betas have tapeworms.

I bought these fish from local pet stores. I'm new at the beta thing but figured I could handle it. Most of the fish had big bellies and no waste in the bottom of their cups so I figured they were constipated. I fed them peas when I brought them home then turned them loose once I saw they were pooping normally. Everything was fine for a month or two then one beta suddenly stopped eating then died a day or two later.

I thought the first was a random act of nature. When the second one died I thought it was sickness so I medicated. It didn't work. By the time I saw a fish with clear signs of tapeworm three were dead. I medicated the water. It wasn't enough. I'm now feeding medicated food. I don't expect it to work. I have had a total of 11. I am down to four and two aren't eating.

Lesson of the day: if you see a beta with a big gut, don't buy it. It's not overfed, it has paracites.
