Found this whilst taking the pooch down to the creek as usual. Started looking closely and there were plenty of them of all sizes. Neighbor says it's coal or graphite, I looked online and I think it's jet? Was wondering if there was someone here that paid attention to the gem & stone portion in middle school science class. Thanks in advance, /an/.

it's coal.

There's a simpler explanation for painted nails. Think hard.
>>2012669
How long? Nothing happened other than it got hot.
Went back to check on it, still warm, it made my fingers black :p can I whip out the bbq and go collect some more? Lol
>>2012638
It must be.
>>
>>2012575
is that a dead bird on your floor?
>>

the lighter probably doesn't get hot enough to ignite it. Anthracite coal burns very clean and hot but it's hard to ignite.
>>
>>2012958
Also when you clink it against another rock what does it sound like? Normal rock? or glass.

It sounds like a surprised duck

or, you know, anyplace else on earth that has traded with an anthracite producing region.

It's definitely a carbon rock, probably graphite like your neighbor mentioned. You could see if it conducts electricity to narrow it down.

How do I see if it conducts electricity? (safely)

>How do I see if it conducts electricity? (safely)

Dig up your dad's old multimeter, put the diodes on either side and test the resistance. If it conducts, it'll probably show a very high resistance. you could put the electrodes like 1 cm apart or so on the surface. There should be some level of resistance, and it should be high, but if it shows any resistance then that means it does conduct.

Alternatively, pull apart some little light up toy, and get two wires, a little LED light, and a battery. Hook up the wire to each end of the LED and then hold each wire on the battery to figure out which ends go where to light up the LED.

Then, try combinations where you stick the wire to the ( + ) end of the battery, then stick the
( + ) end of the LED on the rock, near the wire. Have the ( - ) wire running from the other end of the LED not touching the rock at all and have it run back to the battery.

You can play around with the arrangement, but there should be some combo that allows the LED to turn on if the rock is conductive. it'll act like another resistor in the circuit. A 9V battery would work better because it'd give you more potential incase the rock has a really high resistance. Even a 9V won't shock you, so don't worry about touching the leads. I'll draw a picture up after I get off work tonight if this makes absolutely no sense.

>if this makes absolutely no sense.
None of it made sense, anon. :(
I also don't think I'm willing to put in that much effort. It's sitting along with a bunch of other little rocks on my bird bath. It'll live a good life now.
