Cats weren't domesticated from lions and dire wolves weren't even that big. We have dog breeds that are bigger.

Here's a jawbone comparison, the darker one being a dire wolf.

Even a canine the size of a lion wouldn't be built to carry a human. Amphicyon probably comes closest to what you want, but they weren't canines and they'd probably be shit for riding too.
