Is there a clever way to avoid tipping the waiter without getting spit in my food/threats?
yeah, eat at a different place every time.
Isn't it interesting how different cultures work?
In my country, waiters will be offended if you try to tip them.
Don't go out to eat if you aren't able to tip.

This. 100% this. Assuming you're in the US, tips aren't just "oh, cool, extra money!" ..It's literally our paycheck. Furthermore, 99% of restaurants will have support staff that the waiter must "tip out" and this tip out is usually based off of their sales and assuming they earned a tip.
Meaning..if for some strange reason you were their only table, they'd literally be negative money for coming into work that day.
There are plenty of fast casual places out there where you don't have table service. Go there.
Oh my god we need to start a campaign to end this negative tradition, as well as other scams like useless, and overpriced engagement ring that normies fall for
