This has always been an issue for me, but I've noticed it more now that I'm living with a roommate. He asks me if he can borrow/have stuff, but I usually say no. He offers things to me, but granted, I don't take him up on them because I don't like feeling like I'll owe people later. How much of a douche does it make someone seem when they don't often share food/things?
It depends on what it is. If it's something like salt or a toaster, then why the fuck wouldn't you share it?

It'll usually be stuff like clothes, or cologne and stuff. If I bought some good food that I really like, he'll ask if he can have some; It being limited supply, I mostly say no.

It's fair enough if you don't want to share personal items or good food. If it's something that's cheap and easily replaced or something like an appliance, that's when it's petty.

It just makes me feel bad because he's always offering things without me asking; he's very communal, it seems. I usually turn it down, which probably also makes me look like an asshole.
