Someone once told me that Depression is caused by chemical imbalances in your brain, is there any way I can go to the doctors and get this checked out? I've been feeling like complete and utter shit, dragging myself out of bed to go to school and get it over with, spend my weekends lying on my bed or shitposting on 4chinz, I go to the gym 4 times every week but now I don't even enjoy that. Been thinking of blowing my head off again and I can't be social to save my life.

Am I really depressed guys or am I just being a puss?
>>
I stop masturbating when I feel down then start up again after a month just to realize how much worse a world without hand pussy would be

I've managed to drop porn all together but I still masturbate on rest days or whenever I feel like it, Friday nights are a total fapfest though, if I don't do it I might end up doing something stupid like calling a hooker

Run
Eat healthy
Drink water
Go to sleep earlier

There is a BIG difference between being in a lousy mood and suffering from true clinical depression. It is the difference between preferring to lie in bed and play games and being physically and mentally incapable of getting up.

Yes!

So many people say this, but I never see why it seems so significant? A similar case can be made for being happy, but rarely people talk about positive feelings as "just some chemical reaction".
I mean sure, it's scientifically accurate and all, but doesn't really tackle the problem. It just describes it, even kind of dismisses the genuineness of what is felt.

depression is a chemical imbalance, but chemicals in your brain are also directly influenced by what's going on in your life.

that's basically why it's so hard to fix, or identify the root problem.

some people: something shitty happens to you, chemicals go off kilter, make a couple of bad decisions that are individually not a big deal, but together kick off a weeks/months/years long downward spiral, chemicals go increasingly nuts and you end up suicidal. Take a few weeks off, talk to therapist/get dog/change diet/whatever it takes to reboot chemistry: "depression cured" without drugs

other people: genes/hormones/biology is permanently fucked because your ancestors pissed off the wrong millipede god a hundred years ago or whatever the fuck, chemicals go off kilter, same story... except the only fix is finding exactly the right medication, which maybe never happens in time.

tldr; if you feel like shit all the time, talk to a professional, take their recommendations, and go from there.

Just the opposite nigger. A good scientific understanding of the causes of depression means you can more easily create a cure. I've met so many people who dismiss it as people just thinking wrong, like it's something they can just snap out of. Those people are much more harmful.

I have found that my personal bout with depression was caused more by my own negative attitude toward the things around me than a chemical imbalance. It's almost like boredom of existance, or perhaps boredom of your own existance. Everything loses its value and meaning and you're left with a feeling of emptiness and silent despair. I think SSRI'S tend to turn people into zombies, as a relatively intelligent man once said; "you are supposed to have anxiety. It's good to be anxious that the rent won't get paid because that's HOW THE RENTS GETS PAID!" or something to that effect. My suggestion would be to eituer find out what has become so monotonous in your life and change it, (however impossible it might sound to do so just remember that this is what is bringing you down), or figure out how to be content. This is something that religious dogma and philosophy can teach us, and is teagically forgotten in our modern busy-worker-bee society. What good is this life if you're not able to enjoy it? Read buddhist philosophy or judaeo-christian philosophy. You don't have to believe in their theistic interpretations of the universe, but the practice of acceptance and inner peace that are so heavily emphasized in their doctrines may be of use to you.

Good luck.

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

[Chorus:]
Hey, now, you're an All Star, get your game on, go play
Hey, now, you're a Rock Star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

It's a cool place and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now wait 'til you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

The ice we skate is getting pretty thin
The water's getting warm so you might as well swim
My world's on fire. How about yours?
That's the way I like it and I'll never get bored.

[Chorus 2x]

Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas
I need to get myself away from this place
I said yep, what a concept
I could use a little fuel myself
And we could all use a little change

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow.

[Chorus]

And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

Yes. A doctor can check for things. There are more causes than "chemical imbalances in the brain".

You can self diagnose with depression pretty easily if you arent an attention whore who would have a confirmation bias towards it.

But youll need a doctor to find out why. Sometimes its because you dont do enough, sometimes its in response to trauma, sometimes its vitamin, sometimes its sleep, sometimes its a thyroid issue, sometimes your brain isnt *producing* certain chemicals, sometimes it is but it isnt *receiving* those chemicals..

Thats where a doctor comes in.
>>
>>18705230
Positive feelings are a chemical reaction.
Your brain is a computer. Its all binary (neural fired on or off, chemical receptors on or off), and there is nothing magic about anything you think feel or do.

People have a terribly wrong or lax conception of how a human works.

Thing is, when people are happy you dont have to explain and rationalize their feelings to them. Theyre fine. (unless theyre constantly happy 24/7. Thats called mania. That actually could point to an underlying medical problem with serious consequences).

But when people are depressed and suicidal and their brain is telling them theyre worthless and hopeless (because tyats just what it does when the reward system isnt working right), yeah, ots kind of relevant and important to explain to them that its chemical and they need help.

I suggest you learn some psychology/neurology. Its very fascinating
>>
>>18705505
Different fag. Psychology knowledgy.

Youre pretty insightful.

But "thinking wrong" and "shitty attitude" will cause chemical imbalances. All a computer mang, your mood is entirely what chemical is present. I know im splitting hairs here, but the important thing is to understand there are subtle differences in health and environment

>youre supposed to be anxious

Youre right, it has a function and a meaning. Anxiety is cortisol and adrenaline production. Its a system overload. When youre anxious, your senses are extremely heightened, and your decision making becomes quick. Its meant to deal with challenges and threats.

People who perceive anxiety as "rising to a challenge" or "thinking right" as you put it actually are less likely to develop mental illness.

But the thing is other things can cause those chemicals to spike. For example if you have an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), you will experience a lot of anxiety. And thats a serious health condition that needs medical attention. People with hyperthyroidism have been known in rare cases to drop dead even. And it comes with a wealth of other health problems.

Thats why its really important to treat people with mood problems on a case by case basis. Saying "just think better and go to the gym" can be extremely dangerous.
>>
>>18705578
I agree OP should seek professional help, but often CBT leads to people changing their attitude/outlook on life, which increases their mood and reduced the mental illness. Sure some people have other contributing factors but I'm a "pull the weed up by its roots" kinda guy. I think mood and attitude are largely to blame for mood disorders. As a depression and GAD sufferer myself, SSRI and CBT treatment has helped me personally more than any other method. Perhaps my own bias leads me to believe that this is the best course to take.

Case by case as you said, I'm just trying to help like everyone else.
>>
>>18705717
Meant to say SSRI and cbt has helped me less than changing my personal philosophy on life.
>>
>>18705505
SSRIs are not benzos, they don't remove anxiety.
>>
>>18705728
Yes. SSRI and CBT together did not work for me.
>>
>>18705728
They do, actually, but it takes a while and the effect is less pronounced. Chronic anxiety disorders are treated with SSRIs, not benzos.
>>
>>18705566
Can you recommend some books?
I don't usually read much from these areas. I had the occasional Freud or Jung but more for their cultural relevance, rather than their specific field.
