I want to get a new phone because mine is not doing so well (headphone jack is bad, bootloops, sometimes needs the battery taken out to restart it)
I want to outright buy a new phone, I can either go on craigslist and buy one used for pretty cheap or buy it from my carrier for a bit more. I can save anywhere from $100 to $45 by getting it used, but I'm worried about either getting a lemon, a stolen phone, or just being swindled in general.
Should I pay the extra and just get it from my carrier?

To save you all the potential worries .. yes
Nah, newer phones aren't as sturdy as they used to be. Getting a second hand one is generally a bad idea nowadays.

Only if you can activate it before you leave.
A phone may look to be in working order, but the iemi could be flagged as stolen and you're left with a mp3 player
