My GF is bold, adventurous and assertive, and I want to be able to protect her in any situation we may end up in together. The thing is, I am afraid of conflicts and aggression. I know that right now, of me and my GF were to be approached by some thugs and they would start groping her, I could have just as well ran away. I physically feel sick when I think about it, yet I just can't force myself to be aggressive in a situation like this, even if it's standing up for myself or my gf. I am planning on starting martial arts soon, will fighting there help?
Any ways to snap out of it?

I'd pretty much recommend this Anon. I've never practiced martial arts myself but I can tell you from some friends' experience that it's a great way for improving your self esteem, learn to defend yourself and your girl and heck, you'll even get fit in the procces(if you're not already in shape).
