Go to ALL the university's social events for freshmen. Remember that EVERYONE there is in the same boat as you, knowing nobody and desperate to make friends. Talk to people next to you inclasses or on lines. If in the dorms, meet your neighbors.

And yes, don't forget that your primary purpose in being there is the education. The single worst mistake beginning sudents make is prioritizing partying over schoolwork.

If you don't make friends, not only are you limiting your network, you're also going to have a very lonely few years and your mental well-being will suffer. Making friends is important and encouraged.
