Hi /adv/,
this might be a bit uncommon of a question, but if you know something, please answer.
I have two Syrian colleagues, aged in their mid-twenties. They are studying here in Germany (computer science).
The thing is: They didn't flee, they came by usual flight. And they did have two vacations back in Syria with safely returning and (most important) without being drafted for military service.
How is that possible? In my understanding Syria is a land of war and everyone able to fight would be drafted. Is this a hint they have very much money or belong to the government, or is there a different explanation?

They returned to Germany after their family vacations. They both are fit for service as seen with the eye.
I don't actually know much about their background. One of the two has a high-ranked general as an uncle.
