Electrical apprentice here. I wire homes and commercial buildings under the supervision of a journeyman.

I really need to go back to school and get my bachelor degree. Trade life is not as great as it seems. I can't escape the feeling that my potential is being wasted.

I've narrowed down my choice of majors to information assurance and security, accounting or finance. I already have an associate's in science, but it's been 2 years since I received it. My GPA was fucked down to 2.4 thanks to drinking, but I put that shit behind me. Motivation is higher than ever.

But I am stuck in choosing the right path. Accounting is stable and I have the attention to detail. Information assurance seems lucrative and noble. Finance seems thrilling.

Advice please? I'll give some of my insight and tips to those who want to get into the electrical trade.

If I have a okay paying job, is it a good idea to invest in the stock market?

My dad was just about to teach me that stuff when I was a kid before he peeled out and decided to stop being my dad.
>>
>>18659924
career-wise it makes no sense. I mean after 8 years of school you'll be making less than what a good trade will earn in just 2. And job security isn't all the great. Think about it like this, if an professor graduates say 10 phd students in his career(, only 1 can replace him. The rest need to get jobs in elsewhere, and a bachelors, or masters with on the job experience is probably better path for that.
>>
European here.
Senior year in high school, graduating in May. I am in a high school for electric engineering.

After going to this school for 2 years, I realized I REALLY don't wanna have anything to do with electronics as a profession. I am very indecisive and unambitious about college. The only college degree I would kinda think of pursuing is law.

So, how hard is it to be a lawyer? What do i need to be ready for? Tell me everything. Also, how hard is it to be a lawyer in Austria?

I've already considered that. Yeah, it's a competitive job market but I don't see myself learning a trade. Mostly because I'm pretty retarded when it comes to physical work like that. I'm better with people and books.

This. Medicine is insanely risky and everything else is better off learned either as a hobby where you can fully devote your time learning the raw skills and building your portfolios or through real world experience such as actually going through the hassle of registering a business.

My brother is a pilot. Be careful where you get your education. He decided to go to an expensive ass private school and owes a ridiculous amount of debt (only program in the state though). He went through a lot of training with school plus hours after, it took him a long term for some reason then he eventually became a puddle jumper for a regional delta subsidiary making slightly more than I was in gradschool [I made $30k annually] but with better benefits. He moved up to bigger flights but was not a captain probably making as high as 50k. It probably took him 10 years to make captain and he had to move to a whole new airline that formed just to get that rank, making 80k now? I think? See, the airlines are like every other industry are flooded with old people not retiring so the only way to truly advance is to get out of the big name companies and into smaller ones and hope they don't collapse.

He loves his job though. He's flying four days a week, has three day weekend, like three full days at home. He stays in interesting town's and get some stuff comped. He flies, brings his gaming laptop and plays with me in whatever hotels have good internet. He would highly recommend being a pilot.

If your a private pilot for some team or rich person? Tons of fucking money. He has a friend that does that and made connections with the right people in college that remembered him and needed a pilot.

Well I am not sure about history, I am a chemistry PhD. Professorships are hard as fuck to get and you usually have to start as an assistant professor which blows balls from what I have heard. I would talk to your academic advisor about the honest path, or someone in your history department about what it took for them.

I studied law, but not in Austria or Europe. You need to be able to a) write well, b) be able to juggle lots of different pieces of information at once and c) put those two things together to be able to come up with a well-reasoned argument. You'll learn these skills to a degree, but you also need to have an inherent talent for them. That is the core of law, not the stuff you see on TV and in movies. People skills are also important, but there are some areas of law where you can get away with not having those more than others.

I'm trying to get that "earn enough money to move out of your parents house and get a studio apartment in a decent area and be able to eat well, have a gym membership, buy vidya and of shit every once in a while, and travel 1-2x per year" kind of job. I DONT WANT A FUCKING WIFE OR KIDS (I don't talk to women, period) so it doesn't need to be like $100k salary or something. $35-$60k is PLENTY for an eternal bachelor like me.

Problem is, I'm incompetent. I graduated with a bachelors in Japanese but I don't want to live in Japan for various reasons. I suck at interpreting (literally have autism related hearing problems) and translation doesn't seem secure what with all of this translation software popping up and getting better and better.

What to do? I suck at "common sense jobs" like trades and construction. I also have extremely small hands and wrists that hurt if I work them too much. This also means desk and keyboard jobs that require a lot of typing and mouse moving are out. Not a big deal, though. I sucked at computer science in college, as well as accounting and finance.

What am I supposed to do? I'm only good at reading, writing, and speaking.

Policy and other government work is a big area that lots of people go into. I'm working for LexisNexis at the moment (but I do want to practice law), and I know other people who have worked for other publishing companies that specialise in legal material like Thompson Reuters.
>>
>>18661372
I'll have to look more into that. I forgot to mention that there is a pretty rich and influential businessman with close ties to my family who I met a few years ago, so I'm considering meeting with him for advice or a potential internship. All in all, I just feel overwhelmed by too many options- this is why I hate character customization in video games.
>>
>Graduated high school a year ago and went to another high school for a core program. but my mother believes it's a college. Instantly hated it and started skipping after the last couple of weeks, dropped out of Graphic design to focus on IT. During that period, want to join the military and leave the pass behind. During my time in the school, make more anti-social and decided to cut all of my friends out of my life and ignore anyone who tried to befriend me and sat alone at lunch to not grow any unnecessarily attachment to the younger students. Have no driver's license at 19 and get asked by parents to get one and make up a bull-shit excuse. Parents are never home and I'm stuck at home by myself with regret and self-loathing. Wanted to leave the school since last year but mother intervened instead of me making my own decisions. Feel trapped by my parents and myself. During that period, thought joining the military but fear parents won't let me. Gaining weight and lack of sleep which fucked my memory and I feel like I forget everything. Parents enable these habits of giving junk food everyday after work. Becomes extremely numb and indifferent about the world. Currently at that shitty school learning networking in my hopes of learning Cyber security. During my stay out of high school and in that core program. I have formed a plan to get my life back in track.

Start eating right and exercise. Meditate and start learning a hobby, maybe MMA. Reteach myself everything I forget and try to learn memory techniques. Get my driver's license and start reading books again to get good grades. Hopefully have the balls to leave home to join the army and not care what everybody thinks.

In the end, a law degree is a glorified arts degree. I don't mean in that it's useless, I mean that it teaches you a broad range of transferable skills that could be used in a lot of different professions and that make you a very versatile person. While it can directly lead to a career in law, it can be much more than that; it's really just what you make of it.
>>
>>18661396
I've heard that said for history degrees as well. I presume my best option is to spend college networking, schmooze up with the person I mentioned and try to find a job I can see myself doing for the years to come?
>>
>>18661413
>I've heard that said for history degrees as well.
Of course, but I feel like having a law degree as well as a bachelor of arts gives you added 'legitimacy'. Any moron can get an arts degree, not everyone can get a law degree.

>I presume my best option is to spend college networking, schmooze up with the person I mentioned and try to find a job I can see myself doing for the years to come?
I guess so? I mean, having connections is good, but don't focus on one single connection, and don't be afraid to branch out and see what else you could do and where else you could go.

Ill add a simple two cents:

Im university educated. In fact i come here to adv to throw around my brain because thats all i got out of it. A bit of wisdom. Ive done many jobs from min. Wage fag to assembly lines to janitor to.management to technician to customer service. Everything.

Im a skilled trade carpenter now. My education and experience could get me "better" in a prestigious way.

This is the best goddamn job i ever had. I love it. Ill take a tool belt over a tie any day.

Just for the consideration of anyone here whos on the border and considering.

Im also a really nerdy dude. I fit in with the boys just fine. So if its an archetype problem dont even worry about it bros.

Electrical apprentice here again.
I thought the same when I was entering. Now I'm just concerned about my knees and back. Also, I feel like I am wasting my potential. Props though, an honest wage is it's own pleasure.
>>

>>18661518
It all depends on what your priorities are: money, fulfilment, stability, etc. No one can tell you what you should do, because everyone wants something different.
>>
>>18661543
Its got the money and fulfillment. Stability not so much.

Money, high wages, lots of over time. Its great stuff.

Fulfillment, its an ever changing job, you gotta use your brain and solve challenges, you have something to look at and be proud of at the end, and you can bring the skill home and use it for hobbies as well. What isnt there to fulfill.

Stability: every day could be your last for awhile. That parts pretty lame...

Yes, join the Air Force for quality of life. Navy or Coast Guard as backup. Join the Army or Marines if you like to have your personal after-work time wasted and be treated like you're retarded by people younger than you who are far less experienced but outrank you.

So I am going to Uni in a year or two (hopefully after next year), but I have no clue what to Study, what I want in life, what my Goal is.

I would love to Program, learn Japanese, but that's about it.

I don't know about a career in programming, and from what I heard it's just easier to teach yourself programming than going to Uni for it.

I am interested in Games but I wouldn't say Programming for Games, maybe if it's just mine.

Tbh I am quite scared, I turned 18 a few weeks ago and I have no clue what I am doing, where I am going, so on.

>Tbh I am quite scared, I turned 18 a few weeks ago and I have no clue what I am doing, where I am going, so on.

34 here. That feeling never goes away.
>>
>>18661701
I am scared cause I need money for living by myself at Uni.

I mean I had a job, I worked at a Bakery, I cleaned.
But the people wanted everything done within a set amount of time (usually 2-3 hours), cause everyone wants to leave at a certain time to do other things.

I felt pressured into working, I felt stressed, and I felt like I would be better off without the Job.

I don't regret quitting, I just feel like a wimp, feel like I made a stupid decision because getting jobs in this day and age is near impossible.

I guess I feel like a failure, and what makes it worse is that my Family is in an awful situation money wise, and got worse after my Grandma passed away last month.

I just, I want to be able to support myself money wise but I can't without a job, and I can't even handle 1 fucking job, how can I expect myself to handle another job? Or Uni?

I am not as smart as other kids, I am on an altered curriculum with highschool. I am doing easier work than standard Highschool kids.
I spent 5 years not doing schoolwork.

I am fucking scared.
Sorry for my rant/vent, kinda got a bit off topic there.
