You psychologists out there:
A good friend of mine 'A' recently acquired a very controlling, girlfriend 'B'.
None of his male friends like her. He's changes into a different character around her (less fun) and they argue a lot.
A female friend of ours, 'S', once slept with A, and they were very close right up until B came on the scene. Now she seems very determined to be friends with B and they're an odd threesome of sorts. What's her motive?

Nah. They're all in cahoots. She'd say something to them and B would just tighten her grip.

I would still go for it

1) S doesn't want to lose A as a friend
2) S is making sure B isn't being abusive towards A
3) S wants B to have a healthy relationship with A, which involves outside socialization.
If I were you, I'd look into B and A's relationship for signs of abuse. There's an app for it called myPlan.
Hard to tell without knowing the whole story but here's my guess:
S is not over A and wants to:
1) Give off the impression that she "no longer cares" because she's friends with B
2) Control B's relationship with A and stay informed of anything that happens inside
3) Ultimately steal A from B
