Best way is to do it with him and frame it as something you can together - and then you have to stick with it as well. If you start "cheating" and eating unhealthy or slacking off because you're in better shape/have a better metabolism/whatever then he's not going to be able to stick with it either.

Unfortunately there's no way to force someone - they have to want it themselves. There's simply to much commitment and dedication to simply nag someone into doing this sort of thing. Even if they tried, they'd fall back into old habits.
