Those immediately look like european runes to me. Ran some searches. I cant find an exact match but very similar caligraphic style.

Seems to be a symbolic alphabet instead of phonetic, too, which would be great news for you if im right because that means the letters will translate straight to english words.

Dont rule out middle eastern or north African alphabets in your search if you follow my trail here. There was a lot of influence.

All the numbers we use today even are originally arabic.

Our family has a lot of military and international history, so symbols from other languages and cultures is entirely possible. Thanks guys.

Maybe Grandpa was in some kind of Masonic Lodge or something like that? If you have one of those type-places near you, just walk over and knock on the door one day. Tell them your name and your Grandpa's name, and then show 'em the cup and ask if they've ever seen anything like it. As long you're friendly and polite and easy going I'm sure they wouldn't mind; everybody loves a good mystery or riddle.

Also probably worth noting, he does have freemason connections apparently. So esoteric stuff is possible. He's far from an edgelord though. Very proper and honourable. He was a helicopter pilot in the RCMP.

Not runes, those are made with a hammer and chisel so round figures are not common.

Could you post a clearer picture of the insignia, is it a building of some sort?
