Hey guys, so I'm going to a video game convention today and a lot of local game developers are gonna be there.

I'm hoping to do some networking and ask companies if they're looking to hire for any creative positions. I'm an artist who used to work for a mobile slot machine game company. My job there was converting the slot games that you see at casinos and put them on mobile and Facebook. I would resize the graphics, arrange the graphics to fit the templates for facebook/mobile and adjust the placement of said graphics with xml on y and x axis. Unfortunately I was laid off from this job early this year and have been unemployed since.

My dream job is producing the actual art for a game company, whether it's concept art, UI, storyboarding, etc. But I'm more than happy to find a job similar to what I did.

My question is, how does one approach a game company's booth and ask about job openings? I'm socially anxious so I'm not sure how to approach or even the first thing to say. I don't want to just walk up to an employee and say "hey your games are really cool, can I work for you?"

Sometimes simply walking in and ask could get you far.

As for general networking advice, as usual pay attention to your personal hygiene and grooming, dress appropriately to what you're trying to convey to your target (suit for professional, polo/bowling shirts with chinos/shorts if they're more laid-back or casual)

Don't forget to keep yourself informed with what's been around in world in general or in your local community of interests to be able to strike some small talk.

Be confident with what you've got in your hands, yet always reflect and improve upon hat's lacking.
Remember that even if you're anxious, it doesn;t mean the others are not anxious, they could be feeling the same as you.

There's no shame in getting game over over and over until you could pass the level. Like in videogame.

I'm female. I was just going to wear jeans and a t-shirt with a design I drew that was based on a video game. Should I change to a regular top?

As I said, this is a game convention, with booths set up to play games, so I'm not sure whether to dress casual, like wear my shirt with a video game design I created with the intention to start a conversation with, or something more professional like dark jeans and a nice top since I want to make a good first impression. I assumed most people there are dressed casually.

This is like New York Comic Con, but for indie games.

Hey I remember your thread. Since you're interested in being an artist you should have some of your art professionally printed at a shop like Staples and bring it as examples to show them.

Given the situation, I don't see anything wrong with your plan on dressing casually with that T-shirt you drew the design of. It could work well.

But even if it's a game convention that's notabene will have lots of people with casual attire, there's nothing wrong with dressing sharp, especially when you're mainly looking to be hired by some people/company you didn't really know anything about at first glance, that's what I thought.
