I'm 18 years old, I'm a freshman at a university, and I have one question:
Do I need to have my textbooks with me on the first day of class?

No, in fact it's recommended that you don't. Often times you'll find that they're not needed or use and you can get away with not getting them.

When you do buy the books get them used or rent them. It's truly disgraceful how expensive they are, but this will lower the price somewhat.
