Is squatting only ok? (i.e. no deadlifts) Will my back suffer as a result since I'm not focussing on it?
Jesus, I thought /fit /had too many /adv/ topics. I didn't realize /adv/ has /fit/ topics too.
Get over to /fit/ and ask this in QTDDTOT.
And yeah, anything you don't train would look worse and be weaker than shit you do train, obviously.

Squats or any exercise were your putting pressure on your spine will eventually result in damaged discs.
Weightlifting is a beta pastime.
Nah, it's all TOT anyways.
HT don't give a fuck.
The only real difference will be the stimulation of the growth of specific fibers.
Still do like RDL or something for those little hammies though.

90% of people weightlifting aren't going to hurt themselves if they check their ego at the door and use proper form at all time. In fact the people that lift properly and not super heavy will strengthen all their muscles, cause that is what working out does, and potentially decrease the odds of damaged discs and other body parts. Think of moderate proper weightlifting as constantly stretching muscles giving them more elasticity which will prevent injury and also build muscle which will make that area less susceptible to injure because you're literally not a massive pussy.
Only powerlifters, professional body builders, and idiots get hurt lifting. Average Joe hardly gets injured if he does it right.
