Why do I nearly always look really good when I look in the mirror but I look completely retarded 99% of the time in pictures. It always looks like my face is much rounder than it actually is, my skin looks a bit yellow and my eyes look soulless and dead.
All my friends seem to look really simillar in photos and in real life.
What's telling the truth, the mirror or the camera?
No one has a completely symmetrical face, you're used to seeing the mirror orientation which is horizontally flipped. Everyone else is used to seeing your actual orientation, which is why people in real life and cameras look basically the same

Yeah but if I horizontally flip pictures I take I still look like shit.
In painting there is a trick where if you want to find mistakes in the things you are painting you just flip the whole thing horizontaly.
Because you are used to seeing your face in the mirror when you see it flipped horizontaly you notice all of the imperfections.
Just a guess tho
Because while looking at the mirror you tend to subconsciously at your better angles.
And when others take pictures of you, you lose that reference since you're not seeing how you will look on the photo(unless the phone camera has a selfie mode)
Look up focal length or field of view or film size, can't remember which. But pic highly related.

What?

lenses, not film

No focal length is going to fix that (((nose)))

Smartphone cameras are nowhere near as good as actual DSLRs. Smartphone cameras are always known to distort your face and make it look rounder/longer than it is because of the lens. Learn how to take photos from a good angle, that's all. It's not your face that's the problem, just the camera.

This, OP. Also what you see in the mirror is more accurate than what you see in your smartphone camera pictures.

Are you tall?
Take a picture of yourself from a low perspective and see if its just based on where the pictures are coming from.
Also with a mirror you are making corrections since you can see yourself while pictures are more candid which is why for professional pictures I like having a mirror so we can prepare before hand.
