Depression is not something everyone gets.

There's two types of depression. Situational depression is caused by some sort of life circumstance. Stress, lack of sleep, lack of stability, lack of a social life, lack of exercise, lack of healthy food, lack of sunlight, and lack of fulfilling hobbies or interests can all cause depression. Getting enough of these things or getting out of problematic situations can cure this kind of depression. By fixing the problem, you can get over the depression and be okay.

Then there's clinical depression. Clinical depression is at its core a chemical imbalance in the brain that literally makes you incapable of being happy, since your brain doesn't produce the compound it needs to feel happiness. The above things can make clinical depression worse, but if you have clinical depression, it can't be "cured" by any of the above stuff. It can be improved, but not cured. This is the kind of depression that benefits the most from medication, as medication treats the problem at its source, which is the lack of proper chemicals. It normally takes a few tries to find the correct medication, one that doesn't have side effects such as "making you feel like a zombie". Once you find one, it's like magic. You regain the ability to be happy.

Thoughts cause emotions, period. The sooner you learn to get in touch with what you think and believe at your core, the sooner you can get over being depressed.
