Trying to move up in my company into an accounting position. I've never done any financing outside of my personal stuff. What all is there to being an accountant? I can't just go to my interview and say "I'm good at math and computers", can I?

Define "accountant".
You could be an accountant and just send invoices to people or process invoices for your company. You could be responsible for one aspect of the general ledger (say bank reconciliations). These are places where you'd start, probably as an accounting assistant.
Moving up, you'd actually do entries for the books, reconcile accounts, etc... but at this point you'd probably need a degree.
