I have to choose one staple food to sustain myself for a few months, it will make up 50% of my calorie intake. Which one should it be?
Bread, potatoes, corn, oats, rice?
Beans and rice together make a relatively complete nutritional profile. You can live decently healthy on just this combo for quite a long time.
i'd choose oats because you can eat them even when you don't feel like cooking, they are delicious, versatile, cheap and healthy.

Oats in the AM, potatoes all day long. I felts seriously great.

I'd go with rice. It is the most versatile.

20lb bag of rice at walmart is anywhere from $9 to $12, cheaper with coupons and sales. You can get about 12,000 calories out of a 20LB bag with just the rice.

Skim milk
potatos (take a while to cook)
rice noodles (quicker to cook than rice)
rice krispies (rice with added nutrients)
they're nutritious and easy to digest, especially milk if you aren't lactose intolerant.

Why are you choosing one grain? they're all cheap enough that even people who eat on $100 per month can use them all. Bread should be made at home though.
