Depends on how far.
I did get a little homesick but good thing is I was an hour bus ride away. So I dropped by at least once a month and for special events.

If you do live far however it's a good study motivator and also a way to make friends. Fill the void. But don't be scared that you'll "replace" people in a sense. When people don't see you for a while you become the center of attention when you return and everyone is nice. Something you can get used to
