I work for a small coffee company as a barista. A few months ago they started recording and withdrawing for tips, but I guess they didn't really. Today I was told that they hadn't actually been doing that, and would take the amount i was overpayed (?) out of my future checks.

Is this even legal?
If I quit, can I just walk away or will I still have to pay these taxes in some way?

Do you have your pay stub? The paper that comes with the check and tells you how many hours you worked etc? If so use those to prove you weren't overplayed. Any future check make sure to have he schedule on hand and if they take money out of your check you can do something about it
