I'm 33 and I'll be a high school teacher soon. I originally chose this job because they get payed very well in this country, but over the course of my studies I realized how much of a misanthropist hermit I am and I fucking hate juveniles.

How do I pull through with this? I'm too old to remap my career now and my only other option would be to write a dissertation to become a university lecturer, which isn't exactly great either.
>>
>>18571263
>I'm 33
>I studied to become a teacher/professor
>I did not realize throughout the entirety of my 15 years of training that I did not enjoy teaching
>I can not afford not to teach
>What do?

You realize that your job is just that: your job. Most people don't enjoy their jobs, which is why they pay you for it. You're 33. How have you not figured this out by now?
>>
>>18571274
>How have you not figured this out by now?
Of course I have. I've had all kinds of part-time jobs over the years when I was studying. Some were nice, some were not so nice. But I really feel that teaching is horror. You're basically the center of attention each and every day. The subject of laughter to a horde of hormone-ridden apes who feel just as much enthusiasm to be in the class room as I do. How would YOU like a job where literally everyone around you sees you as 'the enemy' or just some ugly old man talking shit all day. Your job is basically to get ridiculed every day. Great outlook.
>>
>>18571293
Are you self-conscious of what a puppy thinks of you? What about 5 year olds; if they think you are a dick, does that really bother you? If so, why? If not, what's the difference between them and "hormone-ridden apes?"

>what's the difference between them and "hormone-ridden apes?"
I suppose I am fairly self-conscious in some ways. It's just a terrible constellation. Imagine working your whole life in a company where you're the only person that is aging and everyone around you stays forever young. It's an endless repeat of monotonous shit and you're a caretaker for other people's children.
>>
>>18571326
Your problem isn't that you hate kids. It's that you are too self-conscious. Just own who you are, and, if you can't bring yourself to be proud of yourself, then start living in a way to where you can be proud of yourself. Avoiding kids isn't going to fix your problem.

Also, they aren't your coworkers. They are your customers.
>>
Depends on the country.

I can tell it's not USA because you did part time work and still lived to 33?
>Pay is great

Get over yourself and do the job then.
We get paid terribly here in the US and have even more pressure/disrespect each year because "teaching degrees are easy"
>They are not easy anymore.
>>
>>18571395
It's not that teaching degrees are easy, it's that teaching is easy, and you get 3 months paid vacation every year, AND the overwhelming majority of teachers suck at their job (whether this is due to federal regulations or just shitty teachers is immaterial to the parents). The career itself isn't respected because they are failing at their job to provide a general education that will prepare students to go out into the world and find some measure of success upon graduation. Don't believe me? Find me a teacher that tells all of their students NOT to go to college.
>>
>>18571263
>>18571326
It makes me really uncomfortable that a 33 year old future high school teacher has images of little girls saved on his computer
>>
>>18571427
Would it bother you if a 30 year old man jerked off to porn, since most of those actresses are 18-20?
>>

How long have you been teaching? How old are you?

>>18571427
>little girls
You must have very American definitions of 'little' then, when most of the girls in our high schools are 18 to 20 upon graduation, which is ironically the age of those porn sluts you fap to. Also 4chan. There's no need for you to act like a saint here.

>>18571417
Another main reason is my underlying fear of my own mental stagnation. I want to evolve further. I want to climb the peaks of my own mind so to say. I can't imagine sitting in a room full of disinterested brats who just wait for their next alcohol/weed session, while I hold a speech about basic reading and writing skills.

This is why I think I'd probably be better suited to become a prof. The problem is just that it'll take me another 3 or 4 years for that fucking dissertation and I'll be close to 40 by that time, without having any stable life foundation. Also a university lecturer is getting paid less in this country than a school teacher.

It basically comes down to me choosing between financial wealth at the expense of my mental well being, or a life wasted in poverty but with room for my mind to expand.
>>
>>18571473
>Another main reason is my underlying fear of my own mental stagnation. I want to evolve further. I want to climb the peaks of my own mind so to say
Most people want that. That's what your free time is for. Jobs are NOT for fulfillment. They are a means to an end. You had better start accepting that.
>>
>>18571417
>Teaching is easy
I can already tell you either got an art degree or went into hard labor/unskilled labor and resent it.

How can you blame X teacher because they work from 7 am to 3:30 pm except 3 days a week they stay from 7 am to 5 pm (10 hour shifts bud) and make around 28-33k a year starting pay outside of SOME major areas.

They are given a curriculum and are told to make it interesting and fun but if you don't hit all 50 pages of standards in a school year your students won't pass the state test.

>Teachers are failing because of a top heavy administration
>TEACH THE TESTS is what they are told privately
>The public just feels like they are failing because our testing standards are different from a lot of the "better educated" countries.

The reality of it is little johnny is going to be college bound or unskilled labor bound most likely based on his home economics and geographic location.

Most people travel very little from their parents income levels because that is what they saw or know but with our average income levels getting LOWER without minimum wage being raised to fix it.

I could type all day on this. I'll sum it up with this.

>People are blaming teachers on a socioeconomic issue that one single teacher cannot fix for a generation.

>>18571473
29, only 3 years but I had to work full time 3rd shift style jobs to live in the ghetto through college and still have loans. Thanks America.

Just teach high school and be happy you were born in a country where the pay is good and you are likely more respected than we are.
>>
>>18571532
>I can already tell you either got an art degree or went into hard labor/unskilled labor and resent it.
Not really. I'm a Master Electrician at a power plant. Make 46.50 to watch Netflix and shitpost on 4chan during 3rd shift hours (I'm paid for what I know how to do when shit goes haywire). I don't begrudge people having an easy job.

Also, my old room mate, who was best man at my wedding (and I was his best man) is a High School teacher. As someone who talks to him regularly, he constantly talks about how easy it is. I'll take the opinion of my best friend and teacher that I know personally over the opinion of some anonymous stranger on the internet claiming that their job is so hard.

>The public just feels like they are failing because our testing standards are different from a lot of the "better educated" countries.
Let's face it: Common core is retarded. There is no way you could possibly justify how fucking retarded common core is, and it doesn't prepare kids for the real world, which is the goal of education (YOUR goal is to get them to pass the tests, but that's not the point of general education). It has nothing to do with a comparison to other countries, and everything to do with, "Are these kids ready to go out into the real world and survive on their own?" The answer to that question is a deafening "NO."
>>
>>18571561
Teaching them the tests is literally the job requirement.
What are you doing to get that changed to teaching them real practical life techniques?

I'd love to teach these 7th graders skills they could use like real nutrition, economics, and the fact that college is an over expensive requirement to get a piece of paper that says "I can do this job" while reality is on the job training is 9/10 the best way to learn a job.

I'm glad the trade worked out for you even though you're on zombie shift.

What does he teach? What is his state? I'd love to look at his state standards and see where he's either failing to do his job or doing what i've seen a lot in high schools. Not giving a shit daily and skirting by because the district has NO TEACHERS (cause the pay is so trash for a degree field)

Common core is retarded. Education trends just bounce back and forth from the same principle ideas until it's shown "X is better than Y" so people all jump on X's bandwagon. 5 years later studies show that "Y is actually better than X" and rinse repeat for the past 30 years.

But teaching these kids life skills or useful tips for survival isn't the job description or requirement. You might think it should be; but you don't pay me my meager salary.

>3 months off
M8 I get 2 months off at best with required prof development for 2 weeks.

I work on average 47 hours a week, not a huge amount but I make less working 5 more hours than my best friend who got his associates degree in networking and got 2 certs cisco and something else. He makes almost 50k a year to sit in his tech office area and he browses reddit all day.

I have to actively stand and move around and teach 6 classes different or varying lessons depending on class level or group dynamics.

I have to deal with angry parents because little billy got a C on that test because he skipped half of it and it's my fault for not teaching him well. (Little Billy has a C in most classes)
>>
>>18571588
>Teaching them the tests is literally the job requirement.
I already stated that this was your goal, but not the goal of general education.

>What are you doing to get that changed to teaching them real practical life techniques?
I pay for private schooling for my kids, and advocate the abolition of government unions and the establishment of charter schools and the voucher system, which has been demonstrated to work outstandingly, overall (research Chile's history to get a crash course).

>What does he teach? What is his state?
Math and economics. First it was Nebraska. Now it's Kansas.

>Not giving a shit daily and skirting by because the district has NO TEACHERS
According to him, the market is FLOODED with teachers that can't get a job. Which is why he had to start off as an "ISS teacher," who volunteered coaching for wrestling, basketball, and football. Now that he's established, though, he says its a breeze.

>But teaching these kids life skills or useful tips for survival isn't the job description or requirement.
Which is why the public education system is failing.

>You might think it should be; but you don't pay me my meager salary.
If you work at a public school, then the tax payer DOES pay your meager salary.
>>
OP here.

>>18571561
>Also, my old room mate, who was best man at my wedding (and I was his best man) is a High School teacher. As someone who talks to him regularly, he constantly talks about how easy it is
I'm not that guy you're talking to but from my experience being a teacher can either be really exhausting or really piss easy, depending on how much enthusiasm you put in your work and how important the students are to you.

I have a friend who works as a middle school teacher. The BAD kind of school. No classes 11 to 13. It ends at 10 there, so all these kids are destined to do blue collar labor or shitty retail jobs at best. It's rough there. Still he's passionate about it and puts in extra work to make the best lessons he can given the circumstances.

Another friend of mine works as a high school teacher. She works at a renowned school where the parents have money and the infrastructure is good. She doesn't give a shit. She just finished her teacher training with a good grade and immediately switched off as soon as she had her green light. She's just pissing the time away and thinks more about her next travel destination than the current lesson.

So just for context.

My problem is that I'm way too reclusive to be in the center of the room + I value my mind more than proposed financial advances. I would rather get paid less and not have to deal with retards.
>>
>>18571611
Most time is probably taken up teaching these kids what's gonna be on the test.
>>
>>18571620
I have already acknowledged this. Twice. That doesn't magically make bad education into good education.
>>
>>18571263
My high school band teacher was forced to take at a new middle school. (The principal didn't like him, and the way his tenure worked, he was guaranteed a job in the school system, but not guaranteed any particular position.)
After a couple years he quit and got a job at Home Depot, which he seemed to like.

If you hate teaching high school that much, there's probably something else you can do; it becomes a matter of weighing which thing ultimately sucks less.
>>
>>18571611

Great for your kids, bad for everyone else.

The voucher system is a terrible one. Charter schools on average pay 75% of state pay for teachers and most go there because they don't meet all the requirements for state employment yet.

Maybe Kansas is more lax than some states but I doubt it's just easy money.

It depends on specialization. Middle level is not flooded. Maybe his LOCAL market is flooded but that doesn't make sense for teachers or they all specialized in english or elementary.

Education is too top heavy. A lot of government is too top heavy. I don't have a fix I just do my demeaning job for my peanuts and keep going.

Look at other countries where teachers are respected and paid well and the requirements are not very different.
>>
>>18571433
>most of those actresses are 18-20
Yeah, and the guys fucking them are in their 40s and full of steroids.
>>
>>18571427
Don't we all have that
>>
OP, I'm almost your clone.

I'm in California, I'm 24, and I'm under 2 years from graduating. I fucked around for so long in community college here, slowly chipping away at education classes, that now I have a 'sunken cost fallacy' and severe buyer's remorse. I have an anxiety disorder that I assumed would be under control by now--it still hasn't been managed. And it turns out how I hate little shits, and even more so afraid of hormone laced bigger apes at the secondary levels. So I'm thinking about picking an age group, and there's pros and cons to both, and I can't make my mind. I want to say, the little kids are less likely to judge you, but god damn, they're fucking stupid, and you're basically the only parent to them, again, at least in America, where parenting is dead.

That said. I'm not getting younger, only older, like you, and again, because the States is such a shitty place for vacation/benefits, the job is so alluring. I'm basically considering just staying the course so I can have solid health, dental, and sick leave. Teaching jobs pay garbage when you start, at least here in the U.S., but like the military, with years and continuing ed, your salary nearly doubles. And it's pretty much the only job in America where you get 3 months off.

Fuck. I don't want to do the job. But I want to do the benefits that come with the job.
>>
>>18571653
Charter school salaries are achieving parity out in CA. It's bizarre considering that they do indeed have lax hiring standards. I briefly attended a charter high school, and later learned that at least half the staff didn't have teaching credentials (required for full licensure to teach in CA). Indeed, the principal and VP didn't have administrative credentials either. Indeed, the VP was essentially the resource officer, and was an absolute brute with anger management issues. This guy, the idea of him having this job, is what piqued my curosity about how the hell this school would hire him. Turns out it was nepotism, he was friends with the CEO of the school for years, and had no master's degree (standard requirement for administrator positions). My 9th grade teacher (this is 10 years ago), was 22 and fresh out of college with a degree in political science, really no training aside from a few hours of tutoring on her CV.

I was flabbergasted when I googled the staff information for this school and then more broadly googled the requirements for Charter schools. Charter schools are essentially 'private' schools that take taxpayer money. They hire a lot of their staff based on nepotism and connections, it seems--at least for the more desirable schools/posts.

My biggest argument against the voucher program is my own experience with one of the leading charter schools in the nation.

I shamefully admit to being amongst the r9k legion of kissless virgins. I could've gotten a kiss though--in 8th grade. The only girl that ever showed interest in me, was not my 'type'. She was too tall and athletic for me. I liked petite baby faced girls, and well, here I am at 24. Sometimes you just gotta take what you can get, right? Life is all about making compromises.

So anyway, in the interest of full disclosure, I've let myself go since high school. For most of my college career, I've looked like Jonah Hill. Two years ago, like Jonah Hill, I did a weight loss attempt and looked 'normal' for a good while -- and I still didn't get any attention. I live in a city, San Diego, CA, which unfortunately for me, has many attractive people of the both genders. It's not a good spot to be. All the girls here want these Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt guys. Literally. I'm never going to have a beach body, and I'm never to look good, (average face, bad teeth and oily hair unless I shower every day), so I'm pretty fucked.

So I'm probably doing an r9k 'feels' sulking post. Sorry about that.

So like I said earlier man, I'm about two-thirds the way through my elementary education program. My program is 10:1 female ratio. And almost every instructor I've had, has been a cunt. So yeah, it's a very grating and frustrating experience. Being surrounded by girls--which none of them want me--and the cunt instructors? Sometimes, I wonder why I keep showing up to classes. I tried hitting on a girl that was a 5/10 last spring, and she turned out to be a single mom with two kids. That's another thing, most normie girls, my age, 24, have an almost 50-50 chance of having shat out a kid. So I can't form any relationships with the girls. And the 2-3 other guys in my classes are always fucking weirdos. Guess, it takes one to know one.

I don't know what to say or do, man. I'm considering a switch to secondary teaching. But I'm afraid of teenagers and their 'attitude'. Word cap.
>>
>>18572496
I had/have intense stage fright and public speaking anxiety. People are going to call me insane for going into teaching, right. Well, most of my family is filled with educators, and so I was just following their example -- the current. I also assumed that I would be able to get over it over the years, as I did presentation and teaching demonstrations, time really hasn't helped me. I think I need serious meditation or pills at this point. But I'm weary of the 'pharma jew' that screws up your mind.

So I deeply sympathize with your reservation about secondary teaching. There is absolutely no doubt, that teenagers are more judgmental, than their younger peers. I know from first hand experience, and talking with male cousins who have taught grades 1-5, that kids in elementary really do respect you--mostly because of intimidation and being stupid--but respect nonetheless. So I feel like I must stay the course and be an elementary teacher, because if I mangle a speech in high school, then the 'kids' there will definitely tear my asshole apart. I already have enough reason for them to laugh at me (lel fat teacher is here). I've talked to folks who substitute teach in high schools, and they definitely tell me, that it's muuuuch easier dealing with the youngins.

It's hard man. I don't know what to tell you. I know your feels, experienced them, and fear for my future. But I think for now, I'll aim for elementary. The big downside to the younger ages, is that you have to teach all the subjects, get no prep period, get paid less, more is expected of you, you're supposed to be a surrogate parent, and quite honestly, it's even less respected than secondary jobs--which are less respected than college/university. So elementary is at the bottom of the totem pole, definitely.

I like to read a lot, and listen to podcasts. But I fear that I lack the intellectual acumen to successfully complete a graduate program--at least any respectable university. So I'm fucked.
>>
>>18572509
If you're tall teach high school it's got more options for fun and life experience.

If you're short teach middle/elementary because being an old man comparative to their age means you're a hard ass.

Grow a beard and they won't shit talk you.
>>
>>18572536
I am tall, and already have a beard. Like I said, most of the time, I look like a fat Jonah Hill.

The fat part, and the anxiety on top, is what concerns me about high school. Kids will absolutely step all over me. That, and, the only subjects I'd like to teach in HS are: English and History/Social Science. And they happen to be the least in demand teaching jobs. They only want STEM people in high school. I'm not good with STEM. I prefer history. So there you go. Fucked.
>>
>>18572543
I'm short, grew out my beard. Was fat the first year then lost weight and now I get no shit talk and i'm at a pretty middle ground school with lots of poor and rich kids.

I think your problems are in your head.
>>
>>18572565
Are you OP? Just out of curiosity. I thought OP was on the loser end of the spectrum like me, or at at least that's what I was led to believe. Just remembering my own middle school and high school experiences. I shit on for being overweight, was always pudgy but it wasn't until college that I became obese. And they always shat on me for being anxious or 'retarded' in social situations. So yeah, I guess I'm still traumatized from all those years ago. Teenagers are very ruthless, and I'm not convinced that me being 'in charge' will dissuade them from attacking me.

Regardless, I've no doubt that most of my problems are in my 'head'. You can't say that about anybody. Once I get closer to actual employment, I'll definitely go on a serious cut, so I'm no longer some cuddly bear looking dude, that faggot kids will step on. I want to be intimidating and fat guys can't be that, unless they're bear types like the Mountain.

Well thanks for the tips, I guess. I was lucky with height and being able to grow a full beard. I just need to work on the weight, again like Jonah Hill. Seen him recently? I'm thinking about hiring a personal trainer so I can look like him. I'm pretty jelly.
>>
>>18572572

Wow, you sound so much like me in many aspects. I like your way of writing by the way. You seem like an intelligent and considerate person. Good basis to start out from for your chosen profession I guess.

And don't stress the gf thing. Not to brag, but I'm 6'3 and super otter-mode. I'm fitter than most pro athletes in many regards. Exercise has always been my venting mechanism for depression. I call it the 'pain exchange'. You basically work out until your body rips apart and you have no energy left for negative thoughts. Science has proven that regular exercise 'flushes' your brain and frees your synapses from clogging with accumulated trash. But in the end, I'm just exchanging pysical pain for psychological pain. And the point here being that my appearance has brought next to nothing in terms of girls. Yes, a lot of girls give me looks in the summer months especially, but none of them is really interested in 'me' as the person I am. Your are still young man. Don't give up. Cut down on carbs and sugars, stay hydrated and do regular cardio for starters. Good luck.

Also I think you'll make it. You sound like you already have a lot of your stuff mapped out and you're merely in a phase of adjusting and tweaking until you got your routine down and from there everything will go as it should.
