I've been unemployed for about a year, though my spouse and side projects bring in enough to live comfortably, just not glamorously. I received a job offer a few hours ago and have been mulling on it.

I want to be able to purchase 2-4 acres of land and begin building a house within 3 years as my primary goal. I applied to this job because I knew it was going to have tons of overtime, but when I went in to the interview the hiring manager told me it was clear my experience meant I could do something at a director level rather than at manager, so I was going to interview for that. I did, everyone was a thumbs up, but after getting off the phone with him now the job is both the one I applied for AND the director level position wrapped in to one job, and is no longer eligible for overtime. Plus the salary is less than I was expecting, at $90,000/yr it's about $15,000 less than I made at my previous job which had far less responsibility.

I'm really on the fence with this one. On the one hand $90k/yr is $90k more than I'm making now, even though it'll take more than 3 years to buy any land where I live after taxes and expenses. But I'll be adding the stress of two jobs in one (the title isn't impressive either), a commute, and the fact that the company couldn't make up it's mind with what they want the position to be, so I'm sure more things will get tacked on. I've worked here before years ago as well, it wasn't that great - but I don't want all the financial burden to be on my spouse even though I was the breadwinner for the past 6 of 7 years.

Should I take it, or pass and look for greener pastures /adv/?

Based on what you have said, I think the only question is what other options might you have for $90k a year. Im not sure what field youre in or your location but it sounds like you are a decent catch in your realm. There may be someone with a bit less workload looking to save money on a director? If $90k is your target, branch oit and see what else exists atm. Eitherway, I would avoid companies with scope creep and multititle positions, it is a sign of toxic management using tacky methods to save $$$. Good luck either way and keep us posted on what you decide!
