my dad has been a drunk for most of his life and all of mine. he used to make a shit load of money on wall street but now he can't even do simple math problems thanks to all the booze. since he isn't making a ton of money anymore, my mom found some new guy that has a ton of money to take care of her. she started dating him about a year ago, and the divorce only went through a couple of weeks ago. my dad just found out that shes been with this other dude and he called me saying he was all fucked up and didn't want to go on living anymore. it's not like i have anything against my dad, but i'd rather see my mom happy with this new guy compared to being miserable with my dad, even if it means shes a straight up gold-digger. i'm just sick of dealing with all his bullshit. he's supposed to be the adult here, and my mom only left him because he refused to get a job and just drank all their savings away. just man up and quit drinking. what's so hard about that?

I mean, it's not quite as easy as "just stop drinking". A guy who's been drinking as long as him will probably go through physical withdrawal, which can literally kill you. You need to talk him into going to rehab or a detox program so he can come off alcohol safely. It's a very challenging and difficult thing to do. Addition is no joke.
