Who cares if you make a fool of yourself? People literally make a living out of making fools of themselves. Even if you do make a fool of yourself you will probably never see any of those people again and they will forget about you in a couple days.

Just have to force it at least for short bursts. Also, fake it until you make it. What's the worse that can happen? A complete stranger doesn't have the best perception of you? Get out there.

Desensitize yourself. Go out but don't interact with people. Just sit in a coffee shop or someplace and people-watch. Get to the point where they're not so scary. Then take baby steps to interact.
