What made you want to study history in the first place? (inb4 I was good at it in grade school)
History seemed like the most practical of all the social sciences.
I liked reading and writing and knew how much of a dead end journalism was.

From what I hear, you work as a TA (teachers assistant) while working on your masters, and afterwards you're pretty much qualified to become a history professor.
