Is there any reason to get into animation as a profession if you can't go to California/CalArts?

During my 20s, I'd do it as a hobby.
Get a regular job, and then work on animation as a hobby
If you're good and know how to twitter/tumblr, you'll get picked up.

There's no reason to get into animation as a profession period. Extremely limited market, and a lot of trained people that will all be competing for the same jobs.
Go for something that's in demand.
You might as well just do YouTube videos at this point.

That's a better option. You can make a career out of it if you're good or pandering to the right group.
