I recently finished my degree in art. (drawing, painting, stuff like that.)

That's what i went for after high school because i always liked to draw when i was younger.

I'm in my early/mid twenties and i don't even know if i want to make a living out of art anymore. Acquiring this degree was so hard and stressful that i'm considering giving up on art altogether. It's been more than a month since classes finished and i almost didn't draw at all ever since. I don't even know if i enjoy drawing anymore or if i will be able to enjoy it again. I sometimes even doubt that i ever liked drawing at all to begin with. Maybe i just "liked" it, but not enough, ever since the start.

The thing is, even if i stopped (and i'm not sure i want to give up either.), i don't have any other prospect. I was doing pretty bad in highschool, and i don't know what i could do beside art.

So ever since classes stopped, i just spend my days in front of my computer, eating junk food, playing games, and mostly just browsing the web to divert myself from my problems. I have very few friends and they live pretty far. I almost never leave my apartment or see people.

Sometimes i just wonder if i should just send it all to hell and enlist into the army. But i'm not sure i would have the balls to do it and i'm not sure it's the right thing to do, considering it would mean that i'm definitely giving up on my "dream".

TLDR i'm pretty directionless, lonely and depressed, what should i do ??

Don't you read?

What do you mean ?

Get in to a trade or learn an employable skill.

Sorry to say you fucked up getting the art degree.

You could have gotten an engineering degree and still draw to your hearts content. You would probably still enjoy drawing.

Stop wasting your time and start actively fixing your situation. You have a long hard road ahead.
>>
Do online art jobs. Many people pay for paintings (even hentai) and avatars and shit like that. You could make a buck out of this.

inb4 "but I don't like art anymore" yeah, but it's the only thing you can currently do. Besides, my suggestion isn't about going "full time" about art, but about getting money until you figure shit out.
>>
>>18523263
We should NEVER let 18 year olds decide for themselves what they want to study. They need to be fucking railroaded directly into the places they are needed.

Tradeschool is a good option. It means more schooling, but it beats 6 years in the army doing BS for shit pay. You already have a degree so you won't need that GI Bill for school anyways. Start a trade now and you will be making 25/hr or more by the time you'd just be out of the army having to look for entry level work.
>>
>>18523297
Well what makes it an error is that i'm not motivated anymore.

But maybe i can push through that, i don't know. I don't think the art degree in itself is a mistake, it was an actual good school where we were taught actual knowledge and art skills.

And i think there's some work for committed artists. It's just that i don't know if i should or could make it.

But yeah maybe i should consider getting into a trade or something like that. I have no idea what i could do tho.

>>18523309

Yeah i thought about that, maybe i could even make some porn comics or stuff like this. Could be fun desu.

>>18523314

artists are needed, there's work for good ones.

As i said, i don't really know what kind of trade i could learn, but i'll look into it.
>>
>>18523327
>not motivated anymore
Dude, it's been a month. You're experiencing the graduate blues. Didn't your tutors teach you the value of research. Start a new research directory, and studio development book, and start to make use of the time you spend online, doing stuff and taking notes, that might result in new projects.

Being outside of the institution means getting used to a different rhythm than what you got used to during seminars and tutorials. It's too early to tell if you're cut out for this, and doubting is actually a healthy sign.

Also please post work.

What do you mean by a studio development book ?

Whenever i encounter some interesting reference i save it on my computer, and i go check out some artists' work that i like sometimes, for what it's worth ... But yeah i should research more actively, if that's what you mean.

I don't know if doubting is a healthy sign, the best artists i encountered never seemed to doubt themselves...

also i'm pretty paranoid of some people recognizing my posts so if you want to see what i do here's just a little drawing, please no bully

I know you're answering sarcastically, but you're just proving my point. There are very few jobs that require an art degree. So few that you can't even list one. You wasted years of your life, your youth, and untold amounts of money for a degree that will provide you no real means to income.

I like philosophy. A lot. But I don't hold a degree in it. Know why? Nobody is looking to hire philosophers.
>>
>>18523502
Stop spewing bullshit, i'm not interested in refuting your points, you're just repeating the memes you heard here and there.

I was looking for advice for the future. What's done is done anyway.
>>
>>18523528
>Here and there.

https://www.bls.gov/ooh/

Go on, pick out a job from this literal book of all occupations assembled by the US government's Bureau of Labor Statistics that requires your degree and is in high demand.
>>
>>18523541
I'm not an amerilard, plus nothing requires an art degree and it's the only thing you were right about. People who go to art school don't go in there to get a degree, they go there to acquire art skills.

Stop talking about what you don't know.
>>
>>18523263
Be a store manager or something. They'll hire anyone with a degree regardless of what said degree was, and any idiot can supervise as long as you're not actually an idiot.
>>
>>18523549
I know you spent a ton of time and presumably a significant amount of money (whether its yours or other people's is immaterial) for literally nothing except the ability to doodle better.
>>
OP, what you're going through is pretty natural, no matter what you ended up majoring in basically everyone gets that panic after doing the same thing for 4-5 years and wonders "shit, will I like doing this forever?"

But uh, well, you didn't even major in something that would at least make you money when you decide you hate it. So you kind of fucked yourself.
This is why I don't think people should ever try and make their hobby their job. Because you will ALWAYS end up hating something after doing it every day for years and years and years. All you accomplish is hating your hobby.
Gotta pick something you tolerate, or somewhat like as a job, and keep your hobbies sacred. Don't wanna pick something you absolutely hate to do every day for decades, unless it makes a fuck load of money so you can retire more quickly, but I don't think you should pick something you "love" either.

I digress,
tl;dr OP, power through. You made your bed at this point, try and make the best of it. Chances are, this is a quick funk that will pass once you get a comfortably paying job. Everyone goes through this right after college because the transition from college to the real world is pretty jarring. Just like how the transition from high school to college was very jarring. You still should at least have a few years of liking what you do until it wears on you and drains you.
>>
>>18523559
And if i sink even more time in it, maybe i'll doodle well enough to live off these. So what's your point ?

Good luck with that.
>>
>>18523567
Thanks. I agree with everything you said. I'll try to power through it as you said. If it really gets desperate at some point i'll just do something more pragmatic.

>>

>To acquire skills
So you spent 10s of thousands of dollars to do something you could have done in many different, much cheaper ways?

Like my sister got an animation degree and I already thought it was stupid enough for her to pay close to 100k on that but I could at least understand that since she was learning more of the actual computer skills, how to physically use the programs and such, than just learning how to draw.
>>
>>18523609
Yeah that's what i did.

And lol at the part about the "actual computer skills". I learnt some computer programs too, but i don't see how that makes it any more serious or worthwile. You won't do shit with mudbox, 3dsmax or maya if you don't know how to sculpt, so learning how to draw and such is far more important
>>
>>18523602
Ok. You go and fill out an application that requires your degree.

This pic has never been more relevant. Let me guess, you just hate the thought of working.

Let me ask you a few more questions, if you don't mind:

Did you come from money? In other words, are your parents rich?
Have you ever worked a day in the private sector?
Have you worked in the private sector within the past year?
>>
>>18523653
Not him, but I don't think anyone with an art degree knows how to think.
>>
>>18523656
i've probably worked as much if not more than a guy in a middle engineering school. You have no idea how much dedication art requires.

As to the other questions, yes, i already worked 5 months in the private sector, 1 month during the past year

now, if you don't have actual advice to deliver, just sage dude, it's not complicated
>>
>>18523669

Where?

You also didn't say whether your parents were rich?

And you are how old?
>>
>>18523639
Well the point of learning those programs is because they are used in more than just art and animation.
My sister's first job out of college was not animation. It was making 3D maps of where telephone lines are buried for a phone company. Only reason she got the job was because the program they used to make those 3D maps was Maya. She was qualified to do it not for her art skills, but because she knew the program therefore her art degree opened her up for more jobs than just art.

If all she knew how to do was draw on paper she'd still be unemployed.

Bumping for later reply

In the meantime don't listen to people who believe art degrees are useless. Artists can provide valuable thinking-outside-the-box mentality for any business, in a range of different positions. There (almost) aren't any occupations that specifically requires a BFA, but it can certainly bring a lot to the team.
