Is it better to start out with a certificate before a degree?
I'm 22 and going to university for engineering > software engineering. I'm really undecided as to what I should do. I only have enough saved up to barely cover the first year at my community college. I can only get one year at my college. Then I'll be going to uni and BAM I'll be 20k or more in debt due to rent, food etc. I can try finding internships but I'll technically be 60k in debt if i can't get scholarships or internships.
I'm scared I won't have enough time to create side projects on top of the heavy course load.
Another option is I can save the money I saved up and work for the year staying at my parents. I could roughly save up 15k. Then I could go to this school that has has a one year certificate program that covers programming languages, algorithms, math, projects and come out nearly debt free.
I haven't done any hard-core coding so far....I've only done html, CSS, etc. Also I haven't made a project on my own yet. Should I head into college or save up and do the certificate?
I don't necessarily care if I make a ton of money or work for big companies. I just want a job coding.
Another thing: If were to get some non-govt startup will i have to worry about sexual harrasement and all that considering the male to female ratio

It's not a bad idea because certifications can help you with your career, if you decided to have a degree later. From experience, I have a CompTIA+ certification which I use to pay off my community college. I'm 22 by the way and got it when I was 18 before my financial aid was taken away. Used my certification to bounce me backup. They are not bad because they show you have skill and experience. I advise that you take fast certification classes as they pay a dollar to 2 bucks more of the minim wage. I get paid $15 an hour to just check up on the wifi. Hospitals and medical companies are a good place to start.

It's good that you don't care about making any money, because you just decided to go into a career path that is dominated by pooinloos and sandpeople working out of cyber cafes for less than $5/hr US, who will outbid you on every single project.
