I drink alone a lot. It started off social and now because of outside circumstances I don't have friends so I drink alone. Suffer from diagnosed GAD and depression. Medicated but its not working.

Is there a point to living sober or do I keep getting drunk because it feels good?
>>
Obviously your meds don't work get new ones
>>

What medication are you taking? How does it interact with alcohol?
>>
>>18519251
Prozac, supposed to be decent with alcohol. Just tried 2 weeks sober and it makes 0 difference to drinking every other night to me.
>>
>>18519115
Alcohol is a depressant
>>
>>18519115
You need to ask that question to someone who used to be an alcoholic and is sober now.
>>

No antidepressant medication at all reacts well with alcohol. Prozac, a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI), adjusts the way your neurons process serotonin, which is a molecule naturally produced by your body that is responsible for mood and your sleep cycle. Taking alcohol while taking Prozac will screw with the way Prozac works, making it seem as though the medication is having no effect. If you actually truly really want to see what an SSRI can do, you will discontinue taking alcohol, as I am sure your mental health specialist had told you.

You won't know if the medication is working well until you try it sober. How do you feel about giving the medication a few weeks without alcohol to see if it does what it is supposed to do?
>>

Some SSRIs take up to a month to do what they are supposed to do. Sucks, I know, but that is the molecule balance in the body for you. You have to get your mind into the long-term, what you want from the future. Not how shitty you feel at the moment. If you just can't stand it, talk to your mental healthcare provider. They are the go-to.

Prozac worked for me at first in 3 days. I would go back to the psychiatrist to tell her about it but I fell under the radar so I don't have one and it's an 8 month wait which I can't take atm
>>
>>18519413
I stopped drinking completely for 6 months and still wanted to kill myself. I already gave it a shot sober. My 2 weeks sober was to prove to myself it doesn't work,

Drinking is a depressant. No shit that when you combine drinking with anti-depressants, it cancels the anti-depressant out. This is why it says, right on the prescription bottle, not to take with alcohol.

Anyways, anti-depressants won't make you feel happy. They just numb you so you can get to work on improving your life. For the vast majority of people, mind-altering drugs are supposed to be a temporary thing. Stop looking for a miracle pill, and control yourself.
>>
>>18519545
Who prescribed your meds? General practitioner? If so, see a specialist. Are you combining it with weekly therapy visits? If not, then start.
>>
>>18519545
Not all SSRIs work equally well for everyone. For example, I myself have had better results with Paxil than I have with Prozac. Prozac made me feel like a robot automaton, while Paxil helps me feel uninhibited and ready to take on life without alcohol or nicotine. If your anti-depression medication isn't working for you in a way that is functional with your life, it is on YOU to let your mental healthcare provider know so they can do something about it.

>>18519556 brings up a good point. A big part of recovering from depression is getting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to go along with it. CBT is useful in giving you the means to restructure your ideas that create the motivational/emotional pitfalls that cause you to hate life.

Looking at your original question
>Is there a point to living sober or do I keep getting drunk because it feels good?
I feel like you wouldn't have asked this question if you didn't sense drinking is the root of dysfunction in your life. If you want to find functionality, find a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist who can help you sort out your medication. Your current experience with mental healthcare does not seem like it is working for you, but I guarantee there is better available.
